Inspector Ghote arrives in England on an invite to the flat of retired Colonel Bressingham and his wife, but is puzzled when they deny having ever invited him. And it seems that his feelings were correct when something happens during the night...

00:00The Lone Ranger
00:30Oh, my God.
01:00Well, what can we do for you?
01:25Please. It is the residence of Colonel and Mrs. Bressingham.
01:29Yes, but they're much too busy to see you now.
01:32But I am to be paying guest.
01:34Oh, you must have made some mistake.
01:36Mrs. Bressingham would never take in a lodge, especially with the Colonel being so ill.
01:40But I have letter from League of the Commonwealth.
01:43I am coming to England as visiting officer at Scotland Yard.
01:47Well, I don't know anything about that, I'm sure.
01:49But I have letter.
01:51Please, look.
01:52Oh, precious, it's an Indian officer.
01:54Oh, my dear, sir.
01:55My dear Captain Goat.
01:58Goatier.
01:58My name is Goatier.
02:00I am here by appointment.
02:01Yes, sir, I'm sure you are, but you see, I'm afraid you're not.
02:05Not?
02:06But I have letter from League of the Commonwealth.
02:08Yes, I'm sure you have.
02:11Oh, dear, this is Mr. Awkward.
02:13This is number 53, Cottingham Court?
02:15Oh, yes, yes, of course it is.
02:16But you see, my husband hasn't been very well recently, and when I realized you were coming, Captain Major, I rang and said that it wasn't after all convenient.
02:31I'm afraid you never got the message.
02:33Oh, dear, oh, dear.
02:34But I was coming straight from Heathrow Airport.
02:37Now what to do?
02:39I must make contact with League of the Commonwealth.
02:41Well, you must stay here, of course, or for tonight at least.
02:44My husband would never forgive me if I turned away a fellow officer.
02:47No, no, no, no, the room's all ready, so do please feel your welcome.
02:52Major.
02:53Actually, it is not kept, Jean.
02:54Well, if that's all settled, I must be getting along.
02:57I have another patient to see, too.
02:58Thank you so much, nurse.
02:59I'm sorry we've kept you.
03:00It's quite all right, dear.
03:02Now, you will remember what I told you about those little green pills, won't you?
03:05Give the old fellow one only.
03:08Don't go trying to give him more or he'll sleep the clock round, and we don't want that, do we?
03:11Well, I think you can trust me to get it right, nurse.
03:14I did look after my little boy in India after all, with Aya's help, of course.
03:18I dare say.
03:19And remember, dear, whenever you decide to put the old fellow into a home,
03:24there's always my sister's place.
03:25It's very clean.
03:26She'll take good care of him.
03:28He won't give her any trouble.
03:30You are kind.
03:31But we're hoping to get a regular nurse soon.
03:34Thank you so much.
03:36Oh, well.
03:37Ta-ta, then.
03:39Come on, Lord, Captain.
03:41You can leave your bag here.
03:43Aya will look after it.
03:48Come and meet my husband.
03:50But he is ill, isn't it?
03:51He is in bed, no?
03:53No.
03:55Peter!
03:56Peter, dear!
03:57We've got a visitor.
03:59Unexpected visitor.
04:00Don't be a damn fool woman, can't you see?
04:02Johnny Tiger's just coming back to his kiff again.
04:04Do you remember that I said I'd write to the League of the Commonwealth
04:07to ask if they'd got anybody they wanted us to put up for a bit?
04:10Well, they've sent this gentleman, Captain Goethe.
04:13I was just recalling a night I spent up in a Macharn
04:17south of the Natchee River.
04:18Do you say you'll know it?
04:19No, sir, no.
04:20I'm afraid I...
04:21No, Richard Schicari had no idea.
04:23Put the damn thing up a tree and sway it about like a ship
04:26every time you scratched a mosquito bite.
04:28It's a very, very difficult case.
04:30I hope you can stay with us for as long as you're over here.
04:32Well, Peter, dear.
04:33What regiment are you, my dear fellow?
04:36Ninth Gurkhurst, myself.
04:38The ones that showed the other fellows the way.
04:40What?
04:41Yes, well, that was all a long time ago.
04:43Very long time ago.
04:44I say, look here.
04:46You're not a bloody madras sapper, are you?
04:49Colonel Bressingham, sir, I must explain.
04:51I am not an army officer.
04:52An army?
04:53An army?
04:54It is a police officer that I am, Inspector Gauthier.
04:58I am here as visiting officer at Scotland Yard
05:00to observe methods and procedures, sir.
05:02Oh, God!
05:04A police scholar!
05:07But, dear, we always had some charming people in the police.
05:10Did you remember that, Mr. Morrison or Mason,
05:12when you played frightfully good game of tennis?
05:15Yes, sir?
05:15Oh, Aya, dear, we're having a guest.
05:19My man, my man, Aya, Shrathko.
05:21Nein, nein, sir.
05:22Not tonight.
05:23You don't remember, you said that we...
05:25It'll be all right, Aya.
05:26This gentleman is a police officer.
05:28It's an inspector, Aya.
05:30Inspector, Aya.
05:33It'll be all right.
05:34In fact, I think it's going to be better.
05:37Will you take this gentleman's luggage
05:38up to the spare room
05:39and make sure that everything's pucker there?
05:42Off you go.
05:43You don't know
05:50a fellow called Ketkar,
05:52do you?
05:53You remind me of him in some ways.
05:55He was a Konkani Marater,
05:57subaltern under me in 49.
05:58Sue O'Neil Ketkar called him Sonny.
06:00No, Colonel Saab.
06:01I'm afraid I am not at all knowing such a gentleman.
06:04You see, I am not much acquainted with army officers.
06:06Not acquainted with army officers?
06:09I've been with this for years.
06:11Ever since little Peter John was born,
06:12he was killed in the Cyprus show, you know.
06:15And somehow she just wanted to stay on and on.
06:19I don't know what I'd do without her now.
06:21You are having no other servants here in England?
06:26I do, Inspector.
06:27I had to learn to do everything.
06:29From my surf once we got back to England.
06:37Please.
06:39Sometimes I find it a bit difficult to cope.
06:42But, Mrs. Blessingham,
06:44it is seeming to me that you are coping up altogether very well.
06:47You have this so nice flat here,
06:50and everything in it so well kept up.
06:51Do tell us about Scotland Yard, Inspector.
06:57It sounds most thrilling.
07:00Well, I am not able to tell at all.
07:03You see, I am not due to report until tomorrow,
07:06at three pip emma only.
07:07But you're a detective, are you?
07:09You're trained to notice things and everything.
07:14You'd make a first-class witness, wouldn't you?
07:18Well, it is true that I am a crime branch officer.
07:21Aren't we lucky to have you in our flat?
07:24In case we got burgled tonight or anything.
07:27Oh, I must sincerely hope not.
07:30Well, don't be more of a fool than you can help.
07:33No, Peter, you never can tell.
07:34Now, you know one has the most terrible stories about London these days.
07:37I heard of some people the other day.
07:39You know, they were sitting at dinner,
07:41and they had all their jewels taken.
07:43My dinner was at dinner.
07:43This man crept in and took everything,
07:46and they were at dinner.
07:47I suppose you'll think somebody's going to make off
07:49with all your trinkets.
07:50Trinkets?
07:51They're my mother's jewels.
07:52She was a Courtney.
07:53Don't you forget that.
07:54Oh, Courtney's were never an India family,
07:56not even army.
07:58In any case, you never wear them nowadays.
08:00And all those perfectly good pearls
08:02that cost me damn nearly two months pay.
08:04Well, I can't think this is of any interest, Mr. Goethe.
08:07I can't think why we're talking about it.
08:08Oh, it is altogether very interesting
08:09to hear about the many Budmash fellows here in London.
08:12Anyway, one doesn't want to be wearing one's pearls
08:14day in and day out.
08:15They're safely locked away in my jewel case, darling.
08:18Have you had anything to eat, Mr. Goethe?
08:20Well, on the plane...
08:22Oh, my dear fellow,
08:23you don't want to eat any of that appalling stuff
08:24they serve up on those damn machines.
08:26Now, cut along to the mess.
08:28You'll find an orderly in the dining room
08:30asking him to get you something.
08:31Yes, sir.
08:34I would be most happy to do that.
08:38I expect you want to wash first.
08:40Your room's first on the right.
08:42Left.
08:42Right.
08:43Oh, up the stairs.
08:44I will find you something to eat
08:47as soon as you're ready.
08:48Mylar, your jewel box.
08:51That insurance wallet's coming tomorrow.
08:52Bet you'd forgotten all about it
08:53and your memory's appalling these days.
08:55Yes, but I haven't forgotten.
08:57The gusel can is next door to your room,
08:59on the left.
09:00I'm afraid it makes a terrible noise,
09:02but I expect you won't mind.
09:03Oh, no, no, not at all.
09:04Thank you very much.
11:15Yes.
11:16Yes.
11:17Yes.
11:18Yes.

13:09thought you'd be interested and then when you finish your supper I must bring my jewel case and
13:17put it in here to remind me that the insurance man's coming first thing in the morning he wants to

17:12my very dear wife I arrived safely today here in Viliath it is a strange household I find myself in
17:22most strange the colonel himself is much of the time living in the past in much the same manner as
17:30was you will remember the beggar who was staying on the pavement outside our quarter the one who believed
17:36he was still the mahout of an elephant and would sit on top of parked cars and smite them with a length of
17:41sugarcane thereby attracting many flies but this is not all Shreemati Bressingham is also behaving in
17:50a manner most strange while I was eating the English meal they had provided oh my wife how I shall miss
17:57your spices and pickles she was all the time insisting that I notice an idol of Ganesh which I had already
18:03clearly seen

18:39They were going that way Colonel Saab.
18:41I saw them.
18:42Four of the blighters only.
18:43They won't escape.
18:44Subadar Major is there.
18:45He would have them surrounded pretty damn quick.
18:47You sure captain?
18:48You know what the baton is like.
18:50Crafty as a juggle.
18:52Yes sir.
18:53You're right.
18:57But Colonel Saab.
18:59Perhaps one of them is still lurking in your tent only.
19:02Shall we make checks sir?
19:04Good thinking.
19:05I can't.
19:06This way.
19:07Come out down you!

19:28Well, it seems to be 100% all clear sir.
19:40Yes!
19:41Dump of times!
19:42Yes sir.
19:43Well perhaps you could be getting some more sleep sir.
19:47It is not very far into the night.
19:49Hmm.
19:50Oh that's a good idea.
19:52Oh.
19:53Look at that bird will you.
19:55You haven't seen such a mess.
19:57Can't think what I was doing out of it.
19:59Yes sir.
20:00The bed does appear to be in a state of disorder sir.
20:03Let me put it right for you.
20:05Perhaps that was what was making you wake up.
20:07Yes.
20:08Yes sir.
20:09I don't always sleep too well these days.
20:12Yes sir.
20:13Yes.
20:14And you seem somehow to be holding your tiger gun.
20:17What gun?
20:18What sir?
20:19Oh!
20:20Oh good lord yes.
20:22Can't think I got a hold of that.
20:25Yes sir.
20:26Shall I be putting it away for you?
20:29It's hanging in the dining room isn't it?
20:31Yes yes.
20:32Oh thank you all.
20:34My dear sir.
20:35Ha!
20:36Look.
20:37Got a pair of eyes in your head I see.
20:39Then you're a police waller aren't you?
20:42Need to be pretty sharp.
20:44Hey!
20:45Yes sir.
20:46So I am hoping.
20:49I'm hoping.
21:15Put it on the match at Donny, that's a good job.
21:17Yes, sir. Yes.
21:40Mrs. Spencer.
21:44I'm afraid you've been disturbed.
21:46My husband's...
21:48He was having some sort of nightmare I think.
21:51I have succeeded to get him back to bed once more.
21:53Oh you are kind.
21:54He'd had a sleeping pill you know but somehow
21:58I'm afraid it didn't seem to work.
22:00I can't think why.
22:02No, perhaps the pill was just not taking effect.
22:06Yes, well evidently not.
22:09Well, Mrs. Spencer.
22:10Oh, I beg your pardon.
22:11No, no, you were saying...
22:12No, no, please, you were saying.
22:14Well, it wasn't anything really.
22:16Go to bed, Ayah.
22:18I'll be back.
22:19I'll be back.
22:21I'll be back.
22:23It'll be all right.
22:25Good night.
22:27Good night, ma'am, sir.
22:32Good night, sir.
22:33Well, Mrs. Bressingham, I will put away this gun then only.
22:40Oh, no, no, no, don't you bother.
22:42I'll put it away.
22:43You've done quite enough for tonight.
22:47Oh, thank you, Mrs. Bressingham.
22:49Well, then I will just say good night.
22:51Good night.
22:52Good night.
22:53Good night.
23:22Good night.
23:49you
24:04good morning inspector I hope you slept well I mean I hope you managed to get
24:10to sleep after that little upset oh that was not anything I'm so glad I'm so
24:17glad too that you weren't disturbed by our other trouble other trouble mrs.
24:21dressing it is I'm afraid that we were burgled in the night but you know I
24:29always leave that window open just a crack whenever my husband's been smoking
24:32one of these beastish roots in here but colonel sub was not smoking last night
24:36not oh yes he was I promise you that's why I left the window open and and that's
24:43how the man climbed up the fire escape and got in and my drill box was here with
24:46everything in it to remind me you know the insurance man was coming first thing
24:50in the morning so silly of me I don't know what I'm gonna say to him no no I do not
24:57know what you would be able to say oh and the garnish was there you see and all the
25:02Indian ornaments some of them must have been quite valuable oh it's not the
25:09insurance man what's our best comes that's up the kite the kite I am showing in inspector you
25:26won't mind if I see him in here will you you want to look at the scene of the crime and if and you
25:32could be a sort of witness couldn't you witness well yes to say that you saw the
25:38garnish and everything and you're a senior policeman he'll believe you oh yes good morning good
25:46morning my name is Helford Harold Helford Helford by name but helpful by nature yeah but
25:52you'll excuse me if I see you rather than my husband he's somewhat of an invalid and he spends his
25:57mornings in bed I'm afraid oh not at all madam not at all I don't think we need to bother him
26:02with our little piece of business good I'm so glad may I introduce mr. Gautier he's just
26:07arrived from India I'm here on attachment only quite yes quite so very very nice to see you if I
26:16may say so do get on with your breakfast mr. Gautier you'll find everything on the table
26:21cornflakes and cornflakes and oh I'm afraid there's no marmalade do you like milk mr. Helford
26:28I'm afraid that's still on my husband's tray but I could get it for you if you rarely want it
26:33oh no not at all I like cornflakes very much oh I'm so glad sorry mr. Helford you'll find me a
26:40little bit disorganized but the fact is we were burgled in the night I'm very sorry to hear that
26:51madam a great deal taken was that yes I'm afraid there was my jewel case was there with everything
26:56in it and Indian works of art including a very fine statue of the god garnish that was here that went
27:04didn't it mr. Gautier uh well yes there was an idol of Ganeshan here last night and today it is no more here
27:13I say and you can assure me can you sir that particular object together with others of no doubt
27:25considerable value were all in this room last night hmm well I'm unable to state the full extent of what
27:33is missing but the idol has gone that I can witness I'm quite sure you can sir I am quite sure you can
27:43well mrs. Bressingham of course this puts quite a different complexion on my visits a different
27:51complexion mr. Helford I don't quite understand well it's very simple you see I came here by appointment to
27:56inspect the premises for security reasons which is something we do whenever a premium has been
28:01substantially increased like yours mrs. Bressingham and instead I find that an alleged break-in has
