00:00so you're about to head back out
00:03on the road
00:04I was wondering
00:05at this stage of your career
00:08all the things that you've done
00:10all the things that you could do
00:11getting back on the road
00:13going out, standing in front of an audience
00:14telling your tales
00:15why is stand-up still appealing to you right now
00:19at this moment in time?
00:21I think it's because it's your original
00:22thing
00:24it's like your original instrument
00:26if you're a guitar player
00:27if you do well you'll play in a band
00:30and maybe do something with an orchestra
00:31and do a concept album
00:34about Knights of the Round Table
00:35and have a 50 piece thing and all that
00:38but really what you do is you play the guitar
00:40so you go back out and play the guitar
00:41and I feel like that's what stand-up is for me
00:45it's what I did at the beginning
00:46I've done it all the way through
00:48I stopped for a bit
00:51I think in the 90s
00:53I stopped because I was doing those
00:54independent films
00:56and I was working on the Drew Carey show
00:58and there wasn't really any time
00:59but other than that
01:00when I started in late night
01:02in America
01:03I went back doing stand-up
01:05because I felt the two things
01:07complemented each other
01:08and it was
01:10it's just something I've always done
01:12and I like doing it
01:12I feel
01:13I feel it's kind of my
01:14there's a weird thing
01:16I would probably only say this
01:17to someone from Scotland
01:18but it's my job
01:18do you know what I mean?
01:19It's my job
01:20it's what I do
01:20so I'm going to do it
01:23and this particular show
01:26that you're bringing over
01:26to the UK
01:27what's the overarching message
01:30or themes
01:31or where did this start
01:32in terms of the writing process?
01:35I don't know
01:35I don't know if there's a huge
01:37overarching message of it
01:38I mean
01:38what it is
01:39it's anecdotal
01:40in the sense that
01:41it's stories
01:42and it's personal stuff
01:43and it's personal observations
01:45the only rule I give myself
01:48about stand-up
01:49that I started
01:51right about 2016
01:52is that I gave myself
01:55a stylistic choice
01:57that I would no longer discuss
02:00any kind of politics at all
02:02I'm not going to do it
02:03because particularly
02:04I mean look
02:05it's a long time
02:06since I've done stand-up
02:07in the UK
02:07so I don't know
02:09if it's the same kind of
02:10temperature
02:12but in America certainly
02:13you know
02:14everybody's doing it
02:15it's such a hot button
02:16it's kind of an interesting
02:18way to go
02:20for me
02:22to avoid it
02:23and also
02:24I felt like
02:26as an audience member
02:27I thought that
02:28you know
02:29what I would like
02:30is a break
02:31look I'm sick of the people
02:33that I agree with
02:34never mind the people
02:35I don't
02:35you know
02:36I'm just sick of hearing it
02:37so for an hour and a half
02:39or however long
02:40I'm on stage
02:41there'll be no politics
02:43and all the stuff
02:44that you're angry at
02:45will still be there
02:46when you get out
02:46so nobody's going to lose
02:49everything will be
02:49where you left it
02:50everything will be
02:51exactly where you left it
02:52yeah
