00:00The accusations from Paris are stark. According to the government, Russia has orchestrated a wave
00:07of cyber attacks on France. Targets include an organization tied to the 2024 Paris Olympics
00:14and election campaigns. According to the foreign ministry, a branch of Russia's military intelligence
00:21dedicated to such attacks has since 2021 also targeted institutions across defense,
00:28military and the economy. The Russian military intelligence service has been deploying a
00:33cyber offensive modus operandi called APT28 against France for several years. It has targeted around
00:4010 French entities since 2021. APT28, also known as Fancy Bear, has been tied to dozens of high-profile
00:49cyber attacks around the globe, among them the 2016 US election, where the group allegedly helped
00:56Donald Trump by leaking Democratic Party emails. And in 2017, during Emmanuel Macron's first
01:03presidential run, the same hackers leaked thousands of documents just 24 hours before the vote,
01:11according to the French foreign ministry.
01:13In 2017, in the midst of the presidential election, APT28 participated in a massive hacking operation
01:20with the aim of sowing doubt and influencing public opinion.
01:24This is the first time the French government officially attributes the cyber attacks to
01:29the Russian military intelligence. France, though, isn't APT28's only target.
01:35In September last year, several international intelligence services warned of new Fancy Bear operations
01:42against the NATO countries.
