The federal government has been urged to strengthen Malaysia's maritime defense
00:06
to protect the country's exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea,
00:11
home to several oil and gas fields operated by Petronas.
00:15
Bersatus Wan Ahmad Faisal, Wan Ahmad Kamal said repeated incursions
00:20
by Chinese naval vessels could have serious consequences on the country.
00:25
Some problems need to be resolved through negotiation on diplomatic table.
00:31
But in certain times, we must also be ready and aggressive enough
00:37
to show that we mean business in defending our territorial waters.
00:42
Through its controversial Nine-Dash Line map, China has made maritime claims over territories
00:47
within the 200 nautical mile EEZs of Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.
00:54
Petronas, which oversees two oil and gas exploration projects in the South China Sea,
00:59
has had several encounters with Chinese vessels in recent years.
01:03
However, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment
01:07
to continuing its oil and gas exploration activities in the South China Sea last year,
01:12
saying that none of the activities were intended to provoke China.
01:16
With Petronas and Petroleum Sarawak Berhard still hammering out the terms for oil and gas governance in the state,
01:23
Wan Faisal also said there is a need for both the federal and Sarawak governments
01:28
to resolve all differences between them expeditiously.
01:31
So, with regard to Petronas assets in South China Sea, it's our federal duty to protect that.
01:38
It goes beyond political parties and state interests.
01:42
It is Malaysian interests.
01:44
If there is some sort of parochial mindset about state-centric in terms of security,
01:56
I'm worried that in the long run, the morale of our defence forces will be compromised.
02:05
Former Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said the key challenge now lies in whether Petronas and Petros
02:11
can reach a mutually beneficial agreement that ensures the nation's oil and gas sovereignty
02:16
is not compromised by foreign interests.
02:19
Would Petronas and Petros be able to do it together?
02:25
What if they were required to invite other parties to come in?
02:31
That is going to be the tricky part.
02:35
Narutha Raja, FMT.
