00:00No working phone network, chaos on public transport and dead traffic lights.
00:07This has been the situation in large parts of Spain and Portugal on Monday following
00:11a massive power outage.
00:13The blackout brought much of Spain and Portugal to a standstill for the day and led Spain
00:18to declare a state of emergency for the regions that are requested on Monday evening.
00:23As you know, today there has been a strong oscillation in technical terms in the European
00:31electrical grid which has triggered a widespread interruption of supply throughout the Iberian
00:36Peninsula and in some areas of southern France.
00:41Spanish power distributor Red Electrica said that restoring power fully to the country and
00:46neighbouring Portugal could take between six and ten hours.
00:50The situation had improved by Monday evening.
00:52For the moment, the power supply has already been restored in several territories in the
00:58north and south of the peninsula, thanks to the interconnections with France and Morocco.
01:04While the cause for the outage has not yet been determined, first reports suggest a rare
01:08atmospheric phenomenon could have been behind it.
01:12Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that investigations were still ongoing.
01:17Meanwhile, Portuguese authorities said a cyber-attack has so far been excluded as a cause of the
01:23blackout.
