Vancouver community holds vigil after street festival tragedy

Hundreds of people gathered on Sunday (April 27) to hold a vigil for the victims of a devastating vehicle attack killing at least 11 people, at a Filipino community festival in Vancouver on Saturday.

00:13The advice that I gave to some of the volunteers that were traumatized last night is that make

00:22sure you talk to somebody. Just start talking. Don't think about what you're going to say.

00:29Ask someone how they're feeling and then just listen.

00:34You know, the efforts with gathering with not just the Filipino community, but everybody.

00:39And if you've been to a Filipino event or organizer, there is a saying called isang bak sak.

00:45And it means when one falls, we all fall. But again, when one rises, we all rise.

00:51Authorities reported that around two dozen others were injured, some critically, and

01:05warned that the death toll could rise in the coming days and weeks.

01:09I definitely feel like it's, it's etched in my brain forever. Um, I, I don't know how anyone

01:23could, you know, tried to forget, but I know that that's something that is going to also

01:32continue to push me because I, I don't want to ever experience that again.

01:39Police arrested a 30-year-old Vancouver man at the scene. Authorities said the suspect has

01:45a significant history of interactions with mental health services. The attack occurred just

01:50two days before Canada's federal election on Monday. On Sunday, Prime Minister Mark Carney

01:56also visited Vancouver to meet the community and attend the vigil. The incident occurred shortly

02:01after 8 p.m. in Vancouver's Sunset neighborhood, an area known for its large Asian population,

02:09where the Lapu-Lapu Day block party was taking place, celebrating a Philippine national hero.
