00:00Late yesterday evening, I and all Canadians were shocked, devastated, and heartbroken.
00:08What we know at this time is that at the Lapu-Lapu Festival in Vancouver,
00:14an occasion to gather and to celebrate the vibrancy of the Filipino-Canadian community,
00:21nine people were killed, and more than 20 were injured in what the Vancouver police are describing
00:27as a car-ramming attack.
00:32I would like to commend the quick and compassionate actions of those at the scene
00:37and of our first responders.
00:40An investigation is ongoing to determine how and why this horrific attack occurred.
00:47Authorities have confirmed that one person is in custody, and it is believed that they acted alone.
00:54Overnight, I was briefed by my National Security and Intelligence Advisor
01:00and the Public Safety Minister about the situation.
01:04Currently, we do not believe that there is any active threat to Canadians.
01:10I and my ministers are also closely engaged with local law enforcement,
01:16along with provincial and municipal officials,
01:19and they have the full support of the federal government.
01:22My team has also been in touch with the Premier's Office and the Vancouver Mayor's Office,
01:27and later today I intend to speak with David Eby and Ken Sim.
01:31Last night, families lost a sister, a brother, a mother, a father, a son, or a daughter.
01:41Those families are living every family's nightmare.
01:44And to them and to the many others who were injured,
01:50to the Filipino-Canadian community,
01:53and to everyone in the broader Lower Mainland, Vancouver,
01:57I would like to offer my deepest condolences
01:59and my wishes for strength and compassion in this tragic time.
02:03I know that I join all Canadians in mourning with you.
02:09I know that Canadians are united with you.
02:13The strength and the resilience of the Filipino-Canadian community
02:20is exemplified by the Tugalog term by a neon.
02:29It captures the Filipino spirit of community, of cooperation, and unity
02:33to achieve a common goal.
02:36And it's this spirit upon which we must draw
02:39in this incredibly difficult time.
02:42We will comfort the grieving.
02:45We will care for each other.
02:48We will unite in common purpose.
