00:01The purpose of this event is to lift and shift the nature of race conversations in
00:06this country using humour as pedagogy. In doing so we are not dismissing the
00:13life-and-death consequences of racial violence here and elsewhere. We take
00:19seriously the fight against racism but we do not take seriously the absurd
00:24logics that are deployed to dismiss our right to undermine race as a structural
00:27oppression. And I'm very proud to belong to a university that defends academic
00:33freedom even for the most marginalised.
00:41As you know this wasn't easy to get away with doing this. Now for those who are
00:47negatively racialised, which is a lot of you in this theatre, we know that every
00:52day we are forced to entertain and engage with the absurd racialised logics about
00:56us. From media reporting, representations to classroom curricula, academic and
01:01political debates and those tiering conversations. Today we are refusing to
01:07play that role. We are turning the tables and calling out the tactics that are used
01:12to sedate and silence anti-racist efforts. The greatest race debate takes on the worst
01:20race takes in this country and calls it out for what it is. A joke.
