Dick Durbin Touts DREAM Act, Says He Will 'Fight' Trump If He Tries To Deport Recipients

00:00Senator, one bill you've championed for decades is the DREAM Act.

00:03Ah, yes.

00:04It hasn't gotten across the finish line.

00:06I don't know if you can reflect on that.

00:07And do you think there's a chance in Donald Trump's America

00:10that that can get across the finish line before you leave?

00:13I don't know.

00:14The first time I ever met Donald Trump, he had just been sworn in as president.

00:17I was at a luncheon, I walked up to him, and I said,

00:19I want to talk to you about the DREAM Act.

00:21He said, you don't have to say another word.

00:23You're talking about those young kids, I'll take care of them.

00:25Within a matter of a year or two, he tried to destroy them

00:28to eliminate the DREAM Act and DACA protections that they had,

00:32and he's done nothing to help them ever since.

00:34He has people working for him in the White House.

00:36Stephen Miller is one in particular, a domestic policy advisor,

00:39who despises immigrants.

00:41Why do I say despises?

00:42Because I've been listening to him for 10 years,

00:45the speeches he wrote for senators and things that he said.

00:48As long as those people are getting the ear of the president,

00:50I'm afraid we won't be able to help those who are protected by DACA and the DREAM Act.

00:54But I'm not giving up.

00:56830,000 DACA recipients are protected by that law.

00:59There should be millions more that are protected.

01:01These are innocent kids who came to the United States as infants and toddlers.

01:05Their parents made the decision to cross the border.

01:07They didn't.

01:08They grew up here and did everything right,

01:10pledged allegiance to the flag in their classrooms every morning,

01:13thought they were part of America,

01:14and learned probably when they were about 13 or 14 they were undocumented.

01:18Now this president wants to deport them if he can.

01:21I hope he doesn't get by with that.

01:22I'm going to fight him.
