Former VP Chen Chien-jen Named Taiwan's Envoy To Attend Pope's Funeral

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te will send former Vice President Chen Chien-jen to attend the funeral of Pope Francis in Vatican City, which is one of Taiwan's few remaining diplomatic allies. The government had previously hoped Lai would be able to follow precedent and attend the ceremony himself.

00:05The Foreign Ministry had earlier said it was negotiating for President Lai Ching-de

00:09to attend the funeral in Vatican City.

00:12That's because the Vatican is one of the few states in the world to recognize Taipei rather than Beijing.

00:17But former Vice President Sun Jian'un will now represent Taiwan instead.

00:22Sun is a practicing Catholic and has been to the Vatican several times

00:25and previously met with Pope Francis.
