00:07Here's one of the things that I love to do.
00:10Because I haven't been out that much as I get out around the country.
00:13Just to start looking at people and seeing how they've evolved in the last year and a half.
00:18I'm medium fat as Frank right now.
00:20I used to be really heavy, and then I got down to a pretty good weight.
00:25And now I'm kind of right in the middle.

03:07Then I did a show with David Spade and Sal Volcano, and we're all talking about, yeah,

03:15It's like a horrible cancer and wonderful ice cream all at the same time.
03:21If you go into an executive's office in L.A., in Hollywood, they will say, what are your
03:28social media numbers?
03:29Now, the TikTok stuff is the easiest thing to grow on, because you could just have one
03:33TikTok that goes to 30 million people.
03:36All of a sudden, you have a million followers out of nowhere.
03:38Right, right.
03:39You look at somebody who has, like, 35 views, 40 views, 200 views, 14.7 million views, and
03:45you're like, that was the one thing you did, guy licking dog?
03:49So I just took the easy route once again and just went, oh, I'm going to just start doing
03:54these TikTok things.
03:55One thing I found was teaching people how to do impressions, because people look to learn
04:01on there, and it's more entertainment than actual teaching, but doing some voices where
04:08you can find certain voices, first of all, as I tell people, there's like a bass voice,
04:12and that's the one thing, and for some reason, I don't know what it is, but it's Jim Henson
04:16doing Kermit the Frog, is one, because I don't consider impressions of cartoons, I should
04:23say it like this, I don't consider cartoons and Muppets to be so much impressions, because
04:27they're characters.
04:28It's voice acting.
04:29Yeah, there's somebody doing it, which is a different thing.
04:31Right, right.
04:31But it's easier to emulate a cartoon character, because it's somebody putting on something
04:37to create that.
04:38Let me say that growing up, and there was a show on called The Copycats years ago with
04:45Frank Gorshin and Rich Little, and Marilyn Michaels, I think, was the female, and she
04:49was amazing, and I would use their impressions as keys to do my impression.
04:54There are some that I've just generated on my own.
04:56As you get older, you start doing that.
04:58Your voice, though, happens to hit at a perfect, malleable level, I think, for, I think, some
05:04of the most uncanny impressions I've heard have come out of your mouth.
05:07Well, it's interesting, because I don't think I have a great voice for that.
05:09Yeah, yeah.
05:09I think I fight my way into a lot of them.
05:13But, like, a cartoon character is, you create something with your, meh, what's up, doc?
05:18Right.
05:19You create something to get there.
05:20If it's just a person talking, it's harder to find something, because what do you have
05:24to unlock?
05:25What you said was, you would see somebody on the copycatch, and go, okay, they unlocked
05:29it.
05:29Yes.
05:30Now, the gates are open, I can go and do that.
05:33Unlocking is a perfect way to refer to it.
05:34Unlocking is way easier to do with a cartoon character or something like that, because
05:39you watch what they do.
05:40If it's Heinz, Doofens, Smarts, it's very, very interesting.
05:43You know, then, except for the cartoon people, they'll be like, hey, Sean, nothing like him.
05:46And they'll be like, what do you mean?
05:47It sounds pretty close.
05:48They're like, yeah.
05:49But in cartoons, you have to nail it exactly.
05:51Yeah.
05:52You know, because it is an exact voice.
05:54They talk the same way all the time.
05:56Where you can see the difficulty in nailing things is when you go from, like, Mel Blanc
06:02to the subsequent Bugs Bunny.
06:06Or Scooby-Doo.
06:07That are just, it's like that uncanny valley, they say, when they CGI someone, and you can
06:12tell it's not quite right.
06:14Even with, like, Homer Simpson, because it's been 30 years with Dan Castellaneta doing it,
06:17but the voice at the beginning is different than the voice now.
06:20It's more Walter Matthau.
06:21Yeah, and you watch the evolution of it, or you hear the evolution of it, and it throws
06:25you off when you go back to the beginning.
06:26Well, he and Bart kind of flipped, too.
06:27Yeah.
06:28Yes.
06:28Uh-huh.
06:29Oh, as far as the comedic character, the way they were.
06:31Homer became the main character over Bart.
06:34Right.
06:34Yeah.
06:35And Homer became the bumbling type of guy, whereas that was a little bit more Bart at
06:40the beginning.

06:41But you've done cartoon.
06:43Did you do Gravity Falls?
06:44Just little bits of things.
06:45Yeah, yeah.
06:45I've just done little things.
06:47I've never been great at those cartoons.
06:49Because I do try to stay more in the realm of reality with people.
06:53It's not big over the top.
06:54So, to backtrack there, with the Kermit the Frog, that voice, for some reason, can get
06:59you unlocked into a bunch of different things.
07:01So, hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here, right?
07:03Right.
07:03Reporting from the planet, who's being?
07:05So, if you bring it down just a little bit, it becomes John C. Reilly.
07:08Like, you put it in the back of your throat, and there's a bubble back there, and I had
07:12no idea.
07:12Did you touch my drum set?

07:16So, that's in there right there.
07:17That's great.
07:17But then you add a little bit.
07:19And that's very Barclay-esque, too, right?
07:20It could be.
07:21If you bring it down just a little bit here, that brings down a little bit more to the
07:25chest, and then you're not being a knucklehead.
07:27That gets there.
07:28If you add some airiness, a little bit of airiness to it, it becomes Mark Ruffalo as Professor
07:33Hulk.
07:34I see this as an absolute win.
07:36Wow.
07:37Geez, Tony, I didn't even know that was possible.
07:41But then you bring it, and it can become Joe Rogan.
07:44It's like, wow, Jamie.
07:45Pull that up, Jamie.

07:51So, all those voices, it's just a little bit of throat.
07:54George W. Bush becomes Tara Bradsaw.

07:58It's so weird how they're just little bits.
08:01How do you work these out, these impressions?
08:03Because whatever you hear in your own ears is not necessarily what everybody else hears.
08:07So, do you have to say something, record it, listen to it back?
08:10Yeah, and play it over and over and over.
08:12Do you sit with, because this is when I've done it, not too embryonic compared to your
08:19level, but you'll watch a movie and just keep repeating what they're saying or watch
08:24a broadcast.
08:25Yeah, you find something and just say, so let's go Chris Hemsworth.
08:28Right, yeah.
08:28So, Chris Hemsworth would be, just say, Loki, Loki, my brother.
08:32Loki, my brother.
08:33Loki, my brother.
08:34And if you bring it down a little bit, it becomes, I'm Maximus Dismus Meridius.
08:39So, it's interesting because Russell Crowe, Russell Crowe's down here.

08:43And Chris Hemsworth's up here.

08:45You know, so that's where.

08:55and I didn't even realize that that person was impressionable.
08:59Okay, so like, I'll give you an example, like Jay Farrow, when he did his Denzel Washington.
09:04I had never thought of Denzel Washington as being someone, an impression for people to
09:08take on and then I heard it and I'm like, oh my God, now it's like, I really hear all
09:12the isms in there.
09:13The best one I've ever heard Jay Farrow do was Jamie Foxx because that's like, that's
09:16like one where you go, oh my God, that's fantastic.
09:20Yeah, yeah.
09:20And Jay's a great guy and very, very funny.
09:23But he's one of those guys where he comes up with those new ones and you go, holy crap,
09:26where did, that's just interesting that, because I, and that's the unlocking.
09:31So then somebody else will watch it and do it.
09:33And that's what, you know, it used to be, you know, everybody stayed, anybody who did
09:35impressions stayed away from that stuff.
09:38Now people just copy everything.
09:40And that's why I just started showing people how to do them.
09:42So, so I'd at least get some credit.
09:44Like I did a Michael Keaton the other day and it's all in the, Michael Keaton's in the
09:47S's.

09:49I guess, uh, it's just in the air.

10:19So you go in on a, on, on, on a nuance and work it.

10:24I mean, honestly, Chris Hemsworth should be kind of a, but I immediately heard Chris Hemsworth.
10:29Because he's kind of, yeah, he's, you know, he's Shakespearean as Thor.

10:33Um, and then, but he's Australian.

10:37So his, actually, Chris Hemsworth talking is different than Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

10:41But most people know him as Thor.
10:42Or Robert Downey Jr.
10:43If you do Robert Downey Jr., you just sound like you're going to burp halfway through every sentence.

10:59What happened was, Nick, I asked Nick for a diet soda and he brought me a diet Coke.

11:08Behind the man bun, there's a lot going on.
11:10But then, Marissa saw me sitting in the Acme Lounge, which, by the way, $1.45 million, better than Stark Industries could have done.
11:21And she brought me two Diet Dr. Peppers and I said, hey, this person gets me.
11:27But what I didn't want to do, what I didn't want to do is make Nick feel bad.
11:31So I kept the diet Coke.
11:33And he'd done a lot to get it because even when he brought it to me, he was wheezing a little bit.
11:38So I knew he went through an effort.
11:40So do me a favor.
11:41Just enjoy me.
11:44The way, which I wouldn't have picked up on with Robert Downey Jr. is you said so, which is a very kind of Philly, Baltimore type of pronunciation.

16:04And Brolin's like, I knew it was you.

16:12And he's like, he's like, this guy did, uh, this guy was an inspiration for a movie for

16:16And then I did the Thanos joke.
16:18And he's like, wait a second, who are you?

16:21I'm like, Frank Cali.

16:23And he starts quoting.

16:26Do some Belichick because he's a huge Patriots fan.
16:28And my daughter's like, this is insane.

16:36Uh, we're done because we're taking, people out there take tons of pictures and stuff

16:43And Brolin's just talking to my daughter because she broke her elbow.
16:46Uh, and that's how she got into the MCU was watching all these movies.
16:50And Evans's like, so you started watching movies like these movies because she was,

16:59So we go out and then, uh, Evans takes a little break, like five minutes later, but behind
17:03the pipe and drape stuff.
17:04And he comes over, he's like, Frank, come here.
17:05And we're talking for a little bit more.
17:07And my daughter, Julia goes, this is incredible.

17:10She goes, he didn't have to talk to you this time.
17:13He wanted to talk.
17:14Wow.
17:14So we went to another one and, uh, and Hemsworth, who is, uh, not, I don't believe, maybe he's
17:19a football fan.
17:20I don't know.
17:20He didn't seem to know me very much, although, uh, it was pretty cool because he doesn't even
17:25talk.
17:25Chris Hemsworth just, uh, he kind of mumbles things and people understand him somehow.
17:30They just, out of handsomeness.

17:32I've never seen women just faint out of, like, they just, oh, but just out of deference
17:37to his looks.

18:22And I, um, I said, um, yes, I'm doing that right now.
18:25So he's hushed and very polite.

18:29But yeah, he, and he kind of, he kind of slumps into when he's speaking, but he wasn't, he,
18:34and when I met him, he was Loki, but Loki hadn't broken to be as huge of a character as he is now.

18:41Well, even Endgame, uh, Infinity War and Endgame, and even a little bit of Ragnarok.
18:47Um, but yeah, I mean, there was, there was movies, but like Spider-Man, you know, uh, No
18:52Way Home, everybody's just going crazy for that.

18:57We were, we were, we were talking about it, um, earlier and obviously with the multiverse
19:01stuff and so on and so on.
19:02Do you still do a part of, you were doing a podcast based solely on this stuff?
19:05Yeah, but I, you know what, like you said, you told me, you're like, there's so many
19:07of those, it's hard to even, I was like, eh, I, we'll dabble into it every once in
19:12a while, but we've kind of gotten away.
19:13Because there's people who know so much more than me, I'm like a basic fan of stuff, that
19:18it's hard when people know the, the, the, uh, the issue it came from.

19:22Just going to reset real quick, we're just tuning in, Frank Caliendo is here, uh, be at
19:26the Hard Rock on Friday night in Atlantic City, and then, uh, Wind Creek Event Center in
19:30Bethlehem on Saturday.
19:31I, in the same way, I love to talk about this stuff, but when you get around the really knowledgeable,
19:36Oh, it's incredible.
19:36You feel like a neophyte, but what I love about this is you have the same relationship.
19:40My daughter, my, my sons love the MCU as well, but my daughter, who's only 14 is just way
19:45into it and had seen the movies here and there.
19:48And earlier in the year, or maybe it was last year we started, I'm like, let's watch every
19:52single movie, every single one together.
19:54And it's been such a great journey.
19:56And now with the continuing thing, like we were watching Hawkeye last night, right?
20:00It's just the best.

20:01It's an end game was a culmination for us.
20:03My son started out loving the MCU, so he was really into those.
20:07But then he got to the age where he didn't want to be with dad so much.
20:10And my daughter just jumped into it.

21:27And I generally, I won't buy tickets for most sporting events because I can get around a lot of people who can get them for me for free.

23:45And half the time, they seem to know me, and they're pretty cool about it.

23:54But in radio, you know, people don't always know your faces, but as soon as they find out who you are a little bit more, and it's a little different nowadays, because you guys are everywhere, and your face is everywhere.
24:03But when you're younger, I guess, when you're early on in your career, people go, oh, wait, wait, wait, you're Preston and Steve.

24:10All of a sudden, it opens things up, and people are like, oh, my gosh, you're a part of my life.

24:15And you don't realize how little things you do affect people so much.
24:20It's so amazing.
24:21And you can be something that helps somebody evolve, and it's really crazy, and they appreciate it, and they know it.
24:28And then I just use that to my benefit.

25:59So we started out, she wanted to get a big dog to guard the house.

26:06Yeah, he's about the house, but he's also the cowardly lion.

26:16He was supposed to be, according to the breeder, about 105 pounds.

26:26They grow to be, they grow for until about two years old.

26:30So we've been told by the vet, which my wife has taken him to the vet multiple times.
26:36And she said, how big is he going to be?
26:38And she's like, well, the vet was like, he's tracking pretty big.
26:42And she's like, how big?
26:44And I was like, and then I was like, how big?
26:47And then she would be, the vet said, well, you got to come back a couple times.
26:49And then, so the chart, the chart, and I said, well, how big, hon?
26:53She said, 165.
26:55Oh, my God.

26:57So he's.
26:58He's huge.
26:59I love him.
27:01Yeah, he's awesome.
27:01Listen, I had a great day growing up, and she was a champion.
27:05You know, my family is the first dog I can remember as a kid.
27:08On her hind legs, she was 6'3".

27:12She was a huge champion, Great Dane.
27:14And when she would run in the backyard, in the house, you would hear what sounded like

27:21And so it was that kind of thing.

27:28Well, he's cuddly, and he's around the little dogs all the time.
27:32So they climb up on the couch.
27:34He was never supposed to get on the couch.
27:37Now he looks like a blanket and a pillow on the couch.
27:40And the best, my wife would not say the best part, but I'm going to say the best part
27:45is when he sits on one of the little dogs.

27:47Sometimes you can't find Carmella.
27:51And look under Rocco.

27:55And do the little dogs like Rocco?

27:58Romeo looks like a miniature version.
28:00Romeo is a Shih Tzu, and he's got some similar colorization.

28:07But it's so funny.
28:10When Rocco came home, he was only twice the size of the Shih Tzus.
28:13They were like 6, 7, 8 pounds.

28:16But Rocco would lay down, and he looks like a bare-skinned rug.

28:20And now then Romeo started emulating everything, mimicking everything he did.
28:24Oh, there's the Shih Tzus right there.
28:26They look like Ewoks.

28:27See, I have a Bernadoodle, and he's about 80 pounds, and I love him.
28:33And he just loves people.
28:35And so when I see that dog, I'm like a little bit jealous
28:38because the only thing I would like Reggie to be is just a little bit bigger.
28:43I would love it if he was 100 pounds.
28:44Yeah, you think at first, and then you realize.
28:48See, here's the thing.

29:56You know, all the hugs and all that.
29:58And it's funny because he's getting trained and he's doing a pretty good job, but he comes up and he just gives you a full-on hug.
30:04But if you look at him, I say this to people because I think he looks like a man in a gorilla costume wearing a dog suit.

30:12I mean, it looks like there's three faces.
30:13When you look into his eyes, you're like, there's a human under two masks.
30:17He doesn't even know that he'sāyou know, he thinks he's a person.

30:23Speaking of Madden, and, you know, I hate to go to this topic because I know you've done it a million times, but there's a documentary coming out about him.
30:31Which actually makes it relevant, which makes me want to talk about it.

44:45And, two, it's owned by Broadway Video and the network, right?
44:49It's the network's thing.

44:51So they're making direct money on it, whereas opposed to MADtv being...

44:57Almost like syndicated.

44:58Not exactly syndicated, but very similar to that, where they had full-on ownership of it.

45:14And so they were always struggling in that area, so why would you promote late night that
45:19you don't own when it's not as lucrative of a time?

45:25I think they liked the show, and they liked that they could keep the time zone there,
45:29because they didn't want to get rid of it and release it back to the affiliates.

45:34But, you know, at the same time, it was like, well, we don't get much out of this, and that's
45:37the way they look at things.
45:38And that's just how business works.
45:40But there's a solid collection of stuff.
45:42I know you're proud of a lot of the work from that time.

45:47I was one of those people that, like, I tried to do different stuff, and they'd always,

46:13And then, years later, she was on America's Got Talent, and that's now listed as the first
46:18show she's ever done on TV.
46:19Oh, man.
46:20But that's, again, network.

46:22Now they have that thing.
46:23But we had some great guests on there, some people.
46:26And now if I knew some of the people I know now, I would have done...
46:29I was always trying to get more people on that show.
46:32I was like, we need more people to make this more fun.
46:35Because you were in every stinking thing.
46:37I was shooting, like, way too much.
46:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
46:39It was just, and no budget for it, and grand ideas, and really great writers.
46:45But then it was funny, because by the time it was edited down, you go, oh, they took the
46:48timing out of all this stuff.
46:50Yeah.
46:50So I go back and I go, ah, man, if I could have had my hands on this more at the time.
46:55It was also a prime time sketch show, which doesn't work.
46:59It's got, you know, you got to be a late night kind of thing, so you can be a little goofier
47:03and edgier, and do a subtle thing.
47:05And you go off on tangents.
47:07You know, when you're a prime time sketch show, you got to hit the masses a little bit more.
47:11Did you see the documentary about the Dana Carvey show?
47:14I haven't.
47:14With Robert Schmeichel.
47:16It speaks to exactly what you're talking about.
47:18Where every, the show, like, I couldn't fail.
47:21It had so much talent behind it, and it actually was a great show.
47:25But for all sort of reasons that you're mentioning, the luck of the draw, you know, how the winds
47:30are blowing, and it ended up going away.
47:32And now it's hard, I think, because you, I mean, the great thing about the internet
47:38and doing this stuff like I do on TikTok or even Instagram and stuff like that is you
47:42put stuff out there, and the audience kind of finds you.
47:45When you have to play stuff to TV, you have to play broader.
47:48That's the way, you know, comedy clubs and theaters work, too.
47:51It used to be that you go out there and play to a broad audience, and that's how you brought
47:55people in.
47:55Now, the more specific you can be, the more people you can find that love what you're doing.
48:00That's a good point.
48:01And then it grows, and it's shared by people who love the same kinds of things.

48:12But, you know, people who love that show are like, oh, that's great.
