Many, if not all, BMC 550s have a similar issue, foggy image quality. I dont know what was used to seal the layers of glass together 40 years ago but it hasn't stood up well to the test of time. I you shine a light down the lens barrel of a 550 or later model, you may be able to see all the way down to the sensor lens, you may also be able to see haze or some other mottling in the deepest part of the lens barrel.
This video shows what I did you fix this problem, and it has worked well three times so far.
