Myanmar's military junta released thousands of prisoners on Thursday in a mass amnesty to mark the country’s traditional New Year. Deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi was not among those pardoned.

00:10Among the pardoned are 13 foreigners who will be deported and at least 22 political prisoners.

00:16Deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi continues to be held in detention.

00:21Some other prisoners have received reduced sentences.

00:24However, this does not apply to those convicted of serious crimes such as murder and rape

00:29or charged under security laws.

00:32Mass amnesties are often granted in Myanmar for national holidays and Buddhist festivals.
