00:00Davido, who is an iconic musician from Nigeria, in his oven credited with playing a vital role
00:05in the global expansion of Afrobeats, has dropped a new album by the name Five. The name Five
00:11is attributed to the number of albums he has released since he began his career. While
00:16speaking about the new album, Davido said that it is symbolic to the different cultures
00:20and people that have been listening to his music.
00:22I went to go and do more research on the number Five and what it entails, which is like
00:29symbol of hope, grace, change, growth, you know, stuff like that. So I feel like this
00:35album is not only going to change a lot of things for me, but also going to change a lot
00:39of things for the culture as well, like Latin, Caribbean, African, Francophone, French, you
00:47know what I'm saying? So we trust every, every bit and corner of the world with this one.
00:52Davido also spoke about his family ties that have also helped influence his new album.
00:57He began with 80 potential songs, then crowdsourced opinions from family and friends using a ranking
01:02mechanism to help create the album.
01:04You know, after, you know, the crazy loss we had, God gave us twins, a boy and a girl.
01:09So life is just different now, you know what I'm saying? The importance of family and,
01:15you know, good people around you, I feel like the energy is very, very important. And I feel
01:19like that energy is what I use to record this album.
01:22As songs and songs from Africa making their way across the globe as Afrobeat is the hot
01:28genre of the moment. Davido says he enjoys hearing non-Africans try their hand at it, but
01:34wants to make sure the rightful people get their due.
01:36I'll tell you this much, they can't do it better than us. So I tell you this much, like I said,
01:43I play, I say this to Chris every time I play around. I'm like, Chris, you, I can't sing
01:46R&B like you, but never buy your life, you can't sing Afrobeat like me. So, um, I don't
01:51see any problem with it as long as it's done right. And, and everybody's credit is due. Like
01:56I'd rather see them, if they do it, at least come use an Afrobeat, like African producer type
02:01stuff like that. And that's been done in the past.
