Scunthorpe, an industrial town in Lincolnshire, England, is home to the last steel plant in the UK to produce virgin steel used in construction and rail transport. The plant has long been struggling, with many fearing its closure would "be the end of Scunthorpe". But recent emergency legislation from the Labour government has given it control over the site in order to keep the blast furnaces burning, and giving some hope to the town. "We're a thriving town, we need the steelworks, keep the steelworks, nationalise it, get the jobs sorted out and do the job properly," says former plant worker Jim Kirk, as a long-term solution has yet to be agreed upon, leaving the plant's 2,700 workers in limbo.

01:38That'll be the end that's come for that.
01:54Nobody will want to come here to walk in all the shops, house prices will take a nosedive,
01:59because nobody's going to want to live here.
02:02It's just come to a sad end, really, and it is sad, and it shouldn't be like that.

02:20We need to make our own steel.
02:22Use British steel, buy British steel.
02:25We don't need to buy it from other countries.
02:29If we can make it ourselves, then we've made some of the best steel in the world.
02:33So why would we want to buy it off someone else when we can make it ourselves?
02:37It's okay.
02:38We'll buy it off.
02:38It's okay.
02:39It will be done.
02:40It's okay.
