Chinese President Xi arrives in Vietnam marking start of Southeast Asia trip

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi on Monday (April 14), for his first official overseas trip of the year.  His tour of Southeast Asia will also see him visit Malaysia and Cambodia as Beijing seeks to strengthen regional trade ties and offset the impact of huge tariffs unleashed by his US counterpart Donald Trump. 00:00Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Hanoi on Monday for a two-day state visit to Vietnam,

00:07the first stop of his three-country Southeast Asia trip.

00:11He is scheduled to meet with Vietnamese General Secretary of the Communist Party, Tu Lam,

00:16as well as other top leaders of Vietnam during his visit from April 14 to 15.

00:21Xi will then continue his trip with stops in Malaysia and Cambodia from April 15 to 18.

00:27He last visited Cambodia and Malaysia 9 and 12 years ago, respectively.

00:32Xi's trip to Hanoi, his second in less than 18 months, aims to consolidate relations with a strategic neighbor

00:40that has received billions of dollars of Chinese investments in recent years as China-based manufacturers

00:46moved south to avoid tariffs imposed by the first Trump administration.

00:51The visit comes as Beijing faces 145 percent U.S. duties,

00:56while Vietnam is negotiating a reduction of threatened U.S. tariffs of 46 percent
