Depuis de longues années, Frankie Dunn gère un petit club de boxe à Los Angeles. Aidé par Eddie Dupris, son vieux complice et unique véritable ami, il a connu quelques succès comme entraîneur et jouit d'une réputation favorable, bien que restée confidentielle. Un jour, Maggie Fitzgerald, une femme de 30 ans, passe la porte de son club pour venir s'entraîner sous sa direction. Réticent devant le fait d'entraîner une femme, Frankie tente de la faire changer d'avis. Mais Maggie s'entête. Cédant devant sa ténacité, il finit par la prendre sous son aile.
