00:00Christopher Landon, who was originally set to direct Scream 7, is setting the record straight.
00:04He says he did not fire Melissa Barrera from the film.
00:08Landon is speaking out about what happened after Barrera was dropped from Scream 7 in November 2023
00:13because of her posts about the Israel-Hamas war on social media.
00:17In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Landon recalled receiving a phone call from Spyglass Media Group,
00:22the production company behind the movie, telling him the news that she was let go.
00:26He remembers everything, quote, came tumbling down in an instant.
00:29And when Barrera's co-star Jenna Ortega voluntarily left the film following her being fired,
00:34he says things started to get, quote, highly aggressive and really scary
00:37because people blamed Landon for the situation.
00:40He said,
00:41People were threatening to kill me and my family, to the point where the FBI was getting involved.
00:46I got messages saying, I'm going to find your kids and I'm going to kill them because you support child murder.
00:51The head of security at various studios and the FBI had to examine the threats.
00:55Landon continued, I did not fire her.
00:58A lot of people think I had something to do with it and it was not my doing.
01:02I had no control of the situation at all.
01:04Because of the backlash, he decided to exit the movie himself.
01:07He said,
01:08The hate and abuse really spoiled it for me and I lost my love for the idea of going forward.
01:12Landon's latest movie, Drop, hits theaters this weekend.
