Bristol: More than a third feel unsafe walking the city at night

It comes as two thirds of women say they feel unsafe alone in the evenings - a sharp rise from a few years ago.

00:06found that more than a third of people in the South feel unsafe in alleyways and a similar

00:11number worry about walking home alone at night. Calls to charities like Strut Safe are rising,

00:16showing how widespread these concerns have become. Women are particularly affected. Almost

00:22two thirds who walk alone at night now say they feel unsafe, a big rise in just a few

00:27years. More people are also taking precautions, from avoiding certain areas to carrying personal

00:32alarms. In Bristol, campaigners are calling for better street lighting and stronger action

00:37on harassment to improve safety. Some areas like Stokes Croft and the city centre have

00:42seen an increase in reports of street harassment. There's also growing pressure on public

00:47transport operators to improve security at night, making buses and trains safer for those

00:52travelling alone. Police say they're working on new strategies to improve public safety,

00:57but many feel more action is needed.
