Parts of Sydney inundated by tidal surge causing minor damage

Residents along Sydney’s Botany Bay have woken to water in buildings, after a king tide combined with a storm surge to smash into coastal areas.

00:00There's been quite significant damage in Sydney's south suburb of Dolls Point and as you can

00:07see behind me the pavement has been ripped up, the railing along the sea wall has been

00:14damaged and the sand from the ocean has been picked up and thrown across the road and into

00:19the front yards of many of the houses here.

00:22Now this all happened at around midnight last night when the swell started to pick up and

00:28a king tide formed to reach around 2 metres in height but when it hit this sea wall beside

00:35me it reached a massive 15 metres and created some of the damage we're seeing here this

00:41morning.

00:42Now residents say that this is the first time that they've seen massive damage like this

00:49before.

00:50Some who've lived here for many years said that they can only remember maybe one incident

00:54that happened many years ago but it wasn't as bad as this one we're seeing here today.

01:00Let's take a quick listen to what some of them had to say.

01:03About four years ago when we had a king tide the water came up and washed right through

01:09into the houses at Dolls Point, down their driveways into their backyards.

01:14So it only, this is probably about the second time that I've ever seen it happen in my lifetime.

01:21Now it's all about recovery and clean up here at Dolls Point.

01:25The council have moved in to start removing these large slabs of concrete and cleaning

01:31the roads surrounding the area but the Bureau of Meteorology have issued a warning for hazardous

01:39surf.

01:40We've seen a lot of people out in the water today paddle boarding and in boats so the

01:45advice is to really stay out of the water if you can.
