Mauricio Rodriguez discusses why Micah Parsons's recent contract extension news should have Dallas Cowboys fans excited.
Transcript
00:00So we got a 200 million dollar update when it comes to the micah parsons negotiations and the dallas cowboys
00:07But I will tell you exactly what it means and why jerry jones is likely delighted about it
00:15Hey, what's up everyone? It's mauricio rodriguez here at adz sports dallas
00:19So last friday, we got a massive update regarding the micah parsons negotiations with the cowboys
00:26And it's one that for some reason kind of scared a lot of people and i've seen all sorts of reactions on social media
00:34from people going like
00:35Oh, he's not gonna sign with the cowboys. They should trade him all sorts of reactions and the update itself
00:42Was a very interesting one
00:44But maybe not as meaningful as many people would make it out to be before we get to the actual update though
00:49Let me just set the table very quickly here
00:51Micah parsons is obviously going to become the highest paid player in nfl history excluding quarrybacks
00:57There's been a lot of talk about how micah said he was going to take less money
01:02I would argue he didn't really say that he just seemed open to a lot of options
01:07If a deal was going to happen quickly and if the cowboys were going to be aggressive in free agency
01:13They were not aggressive in free agency. Sure. They added 10 players from the outside including trades. However
01:21These players are depth players, right?
01:23We didn't see a signing that really moved the needle or the dallas cowboys at all
01:29The one dude that they signed was dandy fowler jr
01:32But he's going to be essentially replacing duran's armstrong who basically started for you in 2024
01:38This is all to say a hometown discount was never gonna happen
01:42That's important to keep in mind as we move forward now for the update itself
01:46According to calvin watkins from dallas morning news. Micah parsons is seeking
01:53200 million dollars on his next deal
01:56This immediately scared some people because I get it. It's a scary number. Dak prescott is making
02:02240 million dollars on his recently signed deal, but he is a quarryback
02:07So many people have been thinking well, that is quarryback money. Why would micah parsons get that?
02:12Well, this should be obvious, but maybe some people are missing it
02:16Micah parsons is not seeking 200 million dollars because he's looking for an unbelievable amount of money per year
02:24It's more about contract length
02:26The market is set for micah parsons really a miles garrett got 40 million dollars per year
02:31Demar chase just got 40.25 million dollars per year from the bengals
02:36He is likely going to come up above that mark. However, not by a lot
02:40I think it's going to be a 42 million dollar per year kind of deal. Maybe 41
02:45Something along those lines which is what the market has been headed for in the wide receiver and edge rusher positions
02:52So if we're talking about a number close to 40 million dollars per year and we're talking about a 200 million dollar contract
02:59then the update from calvin watkins in the dallas morning news what it really is telling us is that
03:06Micah might be legitimately looking for a five-year deal, which is kind of a surprise because if you think about it
03:14These longer-term deals benefit players more than they do owners
03:18That's because if you signed a three-year deal or a four-year deal, which is mostly the standard around the nfl nowadays
03:26Then that means as a player you're gonna get a chance to cash in again earlier
03:31You're gonna get a chance at another contract or maybe a free agency earlier than what you would with a five-year contract
03:39Which is why really though this report is scaring some people
03:42I think jerry jones is going to be delighted about the fact that parsons wants to sign a five-year contract
03:48It just simply gives the front office a little bit more time
03:51It gives them a little bit more control over the player
03:55But mind you micah is not going to give up control over his future either
03:59He's likely going to get a contract that has a no tax clause that has a no trade clause
04:05And if push comes to shove he will have options before his deal is up. So long story short
04:11I don't think things have changed a lot on the micah parsons front
04:15Micah is still sticking to become the highest paid non quarterback in nfl history
04:19The cowboys are still comfortable waiting things out and they will probably let this drag out
04:25maybe even until training camp like they did with dak and cd last year, but
04:30Don't expect a number that doesn't make sense
04:33It's still going to be close to 40 million dollars per year
04:36And that's just what it is
04:38But it is a little bit of a surprise to me that micah is seeking that five-year contract
04:43That's something cowboys fans in my opinion should be excited about though. So enjoy the process and i'll see you here next time
