00:0531 years ago, Andrew Tan faced his most challenging time in his life

00:10when he was diagnosed with HIV

00:13Without much knowledge about the disease and the opportunity to recover

00:17he was affected by the stigma of society and the belief that his life would end

00:23At that time, it was really scary

00:26Because we didn't have enough information

00:28and what we always heard on TV and radio

00:33was that HIV was death

00:38In the past, they didn't use HIV, they used AIDS

00:43AIDS was death

00:44So there was no difference between the disease and its consequences

00:50The President of the Association for AIDS Support in Kuala Lumpur

00:53admitted that for a year, he was hiding his illness from his family

00:58Finally, when his physical strength was getting worse

01:01he surrendered to get help

01:04So when I actually registered at a clinic

01:12PPUM, Pusat Perbuatan Universiti Melayu

01:17My immune system was getting worse

01:23My CD4 level was 149, which means it was in the AIDS stage

01:29Usually, those who have a CD4 level that is less than 200

01:38are considered as AIDS survivors

01:45During his treatment, Andrew was self-sacrificing

01:47because he was afraid of the stigma of society towards HIV or AIDS survivors

01:53After 8 years, my own doctor made a suggestion

02:00He said, Andrew, do you want to help new people?

02:03Okay, you've taken your medicine, you're stable

02:08and your CD4 level is good

02:11like a normal person now

02:14So I said, yes, I can help

02:17Since 2022, Andrew has been an activist and a class member

02:20who goes to high-risk areas such as dark alleys in Chowkit

02:26He not only gives counselling, but also helps community health workers

02:31to conduct HIV screening tests for those at high risk

02:36Until last year, more than 5,000 individuals

02:38have received screening at a class office in Sentul

02:42Now at the age of 65, Andrew remains firm in his mission to help the community

02:49So I think, why did God give me a 30-year bonus?

02:58So I think there is a reason why he wants to give me this bonus

03:05So I think it's worth it
