00:00
Every year, a European consumes 1.9 million litres of water.
00:05
That's the equivalent of half an Olympic swimming pool.
00:07
Let's see what's hidden behind this consumption.
00:20
Since the end of the 19th century,
00:22
French people's domestic water consumption has multiplied by 10.
00:26
Here are 5 tips to fight against this huge waste.
00:29
The first action is in the toilets.
00:31
In the tank, you just have to pour a bottle of 1.5 litres
00:37
which will allow you to save so much
00:41
each time you go hunting
00:43
since this bottle now occupies the tank.
00:46
It may seem insignificant,
00:47
but it's up to 3,000 litres of water per year and per person.
00:51
While we're in the bathroom,
00:52
our important gesture is to prefer the shower rather than the bathroom.
00:56
A shower of less than 3 minutes allows you to divide your water consumption by 10.
01:01
Another way to save water at home
01:03
is to install a foam under your taps
01:06
which allows you to ventilate the water and save up to 50%.
01:10
So you see, here we have the classic flow of water.
01:13
We can see the water flowing.
01:15
And we can install this little piece of metal
01:17
which can be found in any DIY store for a few euros.
01:21
It's very easy to install.
01:22
The screw head is standard.
01:23
You just have to screw it under the tap.
01:25
It takes absolutely 5 seconds.
01:29
And look, the water has whitened
01:31
which means that today it is ventilated
01:33
and so there is less water volume.
01:35
Another tip is to do the dishes in the old way.
01:39
This means that we soap without almost using water.
01:44
And so a very small stream of water for a C.
01:47
And here is a dish made with less than a liter of water.
01:51
Last tip, we do the track at home.
01:54
A tap that drips is 100 liters of water wasted per day
01:57
or a total of 100 euros wasted each year.
02:00
And a water pump that leaks
02:02
can even be up to 600 liters of water wasted each day
02:05
or a total of more than 800 euros wasted every year.
02:17
Another thing we don't necessarily think about
02:19
when we talk about water consumption
02:21
is our consumption of plastic bottles.
02:23
For a bottle of half a liter,
02:25
we actually need 3 liters of water
02:27
and 33 centiliters of oil
02:29
to finally put an end to all this waste.
02:31
We consume tap water
02:33
and we're going to see what's going on behind our tap.
02:36
Hi, hello.
02:37
Hello.
02:38
Thank you for welcoming us here.
02:39
With pleasure.
02:40
You are an assistant to the Mayor of Paris,
02:42
to the Ecological Transition.
02:43
Yes.
02:44
And the first question I want to ask you is
02:46
what happens when we turn our tap?
02:48
A lot of things happen behind the tap,
02:50
we don't realize it,
02:51
but behind the taps in Paris,
02:52
there are 90 jobs,
02:53
900 women and men who work every day
02:55
to bring water to Paris.
02:56
And in particular, we launch an installation like this one.
02:59
We are at the Montsouris reservoir
03:00
in the 14th arrondissement.
03:01
And we store a large part of the Parisians' drinking water here.
03:04
So there is a part behind the tap that is played here.
03:07
You show us?
03:08
With pleasure, let's go.
03:09
Let's go.
03:15
That's it, Célia, we're getting to the famous tank.
03:18
There we have hundreds of meters of corridor
03:20
that really surrounds all the basins.
03:21
Yes, it takes a while to go all the way around.
03:25
Because we are really on a surface of 3 hectares in all.
03:28
So it's very, very big.
03:29
We have a water level that goes up,
03:31
that goes down as the day goes on,
03:33
the week.
03:34
It is higher in the morning,
03:35
higher in the evening.
03:36
We restore it to fill it up again.
03:38
Okay.
03:39
And to make sure that we always have this capacity
03:41
of advance and safety margin.
03:46
So here, Célia, we are on the roof of the reservoir.
03:49
Yes, we would think it is a large meadow,
03:51
a large football field.
03:52
But in fact, we are actually on the roof
03:54
of the largest reservoir in Paris.
03:55
These are really the great arrangements
03:57
of Haussmann and Belgrand.
03:58
At one point, they had to bring water to the Parisians.
04:00
They make titanic arrangements in a few years,
04:03
including the creation of large aqueducts
04:05
that make 100, 150 km.
04:07
Which means that today,
04:08
we produce and distribute every day
04:10
500,000 cubic meters of water every day in Paris.
04:17
Where are we, Célia?
04:18
Here, we are on the roof of the reservoir.
04:20
And we are facing what we call cows.
04:23
This is where the water comes from,
04:25
by cubic meters.
04:26
It is propelled from the aqueduct
04:27
and then it goes down to the reservoir,
04:29
little by little, to fill it up.
04:31
Okay.
04:32
And a water that is propelled
04:34
and that arrives in aqueducts,
04:36
as you said, aqueducts
04:37
that come from several regions around Paris.
04:39
These are really our century-old aqueducts
04:41
coming from the south and southeast of Paris.
04:43
We have another one coming from the west of Paris.
04:46
And these aqueducts, in fact,
04:47
they bring us 50% of the water
04:49
that is consumed every day by the Parisians.
04:51
The rest is stored in the sea
04:53
and in the Seine,
04:54
in more recent mines.
04:55
There are a lot of preconceived ideas
04:56
that circulate around water,
04:58
such as potable water
04:59
would not be as potable
05:00
as what we have just said,
05:01
with a lot of things
05:02
that are harmful to consumption.
05:04
Is that really the case?
05:05
It's a shame,
05:06
because indeed,
05:07
tap water is really
05:08
of very, very good quality.
05:09
In Paris,
05:10
we have all the criteria,
05:11
in fact, of potability.
05:12
It is the food
05:13
most controlled
05:14
by the national health institutes.
05:16
We even have an agreement
05:17
from the National Health Agency
05:19
to put them in the exhaust.
05:20
So, not only is it good quality water,
05:22
but what people don't know either,
05:23
is that it is not expensive at all.
05:25
300% cheaper on average
05:26
than when you buy bottled water.
05:28
And besides, there is no waste.
05:30
So there is a local quality side.
05:32
You really have to go there
05:33
without hesitation.
05:35
Water is indeed threatened
05:36
in the long term,
05:37
including in France,
05:38
and it is threatened in two ways.
05:39
We are going to have,
05:40
under the effects
05:41
of climate change,
05:42
a problem of quantity of water.
05:43
We already know
05:44
that our aquifers,
05:45
that our rivers,
05:46
are going to lose water.
05:47
And this problem of quantity
05:48
is going to exacerbate
05:49
the problems of quality of water.
05:50
Less water,
05:51
more pollution,
05:52
less concentration.
05:53
So we have to save money
05:54
and we have to clearly
05:55
change our way of life
05:56
so that it is less polluting,
05:57
whether it is the agricultural way,
05:59
but also our way of life,
06:00
of waste,
06:01
of consumption,
06:02
to protect this water.
06:03
It is a big challenge,
06:04
but a major one,
06:05
we say it.
06:06
We have to repeat it,
06:07
once again,
06:08
water is vital,
06:09
we all need it to live.
06:10
And when we run out of it,
06:11
we may be really annoyed.
06:14
Célia, thank you very much
06:15
for the visit.
06:16
With great pleasure.
06:17
See you soon.
06:18
Goodbye.
06:21
So we just saw
06:22
all the water
06:23
behind our tap,
06:24
but you should know
06:25
that 96% of our water consumption
06:27
is invisible.
06:28
This water is hidden
06:29
where?
06:30
It is hidden in agriculture,
06:31
which is responsible
06:32
for 70% of the water
06:33
consumption in the world.
06:34
You should know that
06:35
to make a kilo of chocolate,
06:36
we need 17 milliliters of water,
06:37
a kilo of coffee
06:38
is 16 milliliters of water,
06:39
and a kilo of beef
06:40
is 15 milliliters of water.
06:41
A few tips,
06:42
adopt a rather
06:43
flexitarian,
06:44
or even vegetarian diet
06:45
and eat local
06:46
and seasonal food.
06:47
For clothes,
06:48
which still represent
06:49
4% of the water
06:50
consumed in the world,
06:51
simply choose
06:52
clothes made
06:53
of recycled fiber
06:54
and even,
06:55
ideally,
06:56
buy everything
06:57
second-hand.
06:58
Change your clothes
06:59
every day,
07:00
second-hand.
07:01
Changing your world
07:02
is changing the world
07:03
and participating
07:04
in the construction
07:05
of a better world.
07:06
It starts with me.
