Interview: Joaquin Phoenix tells Brut why he's vegan

He took part in a protest while he was on his way to attend the Toronto International Film Festival. Vegan from the age of 3, he has been fighting for animal rights his whole life. Joaquin Phoenix tells Brut why he’s so committed to this cause.

00:00I've been vegan since I was three years old and at that age me and my siblings witnessed fish being

00:06killed in a really violent and aggressive way and it was just absolutely obvious that that was

00:12something that we didn't want to participate in and we didn't want to support. You know to me it

00:18just seems obvious. I don't want to cause pain to another living empathetic creature. I don't want

00:27to take its babies away from it. I don't want to force it to to be indoors and fattened up just to

00:34be slaughtered. It is absurd and barbaric and I just I don't understand how you could witness that

00:44and not be affected by it but certainly it's also you know the effect that it has on our environment

00:50is devastating. So for me it's it's just it's my life and it has always been my life and it's

00:59it's really one of the most important things to me.

01:50I thought that I was avoiding wool. I never knew that suits were made of wool. I had that

02:14rationalization well it's something that has just taken off them and there's not a lot of abuse

02:20which seems incredibly naive. You can help stop the suffering. Anything you have that

02:26is made from animal skins can be made without.
