00:00If there's one thing that sets humans apart, I think it would be that we have the power to learn and choose not to be cruel to other animals.
00:09I used to go fishing with my father and it was during one of these fishing trips when I had a fish on a hook that was struggling to get away and I thought,
00:34why am I being so cruel to this fish that just wants to live in the sea? And that was the beginning really for me, is through killing a fish I decided I didn't want to kill any animals, so I became vegetarian at age 14 and then vegan at age 16.
00:50PETA's biggest victory is convincing so many designers to stop using fur. We have pressured names like Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, most recently Versace, Gucci, Michael Kors, John Galliano, we've convinced all of them to stop using fur, Armani, the list goes on and on.
01:11And fur is just the start, we don't want animals killed for leather, we don't want animals killed for feathers, we don't want animals killed for wool, there's so many modern sophisticated fabrics that there's really no reason to kill animals for any fashion.
01:41We live in a very star obsessed world, people feel very aspirational, they want to look like this pop star, they want to look like that actress, and so when we show stars who are vegan or vegetarian or fur free, it's a really easy way for people to see that they're not giving up anything by stopping eating animals or wearing animals, but instead they're gaining a lot of style.
02:05Sometimes in nature one animal is cruel to another, that's just their nature. I think it's human's nature to choose to be more civilized, to choose to be more intelligent, to choose to be less violent.
