One entrepreneur's plan to curb food waste

Americans waste $161 billion of food every year. By connecting consumers with surplus food from restaurants, could this new app be a game changer?

00:00If food waste was a country, it would be the third biggest emitter when it comes to CO2.

00:29Most people don't think of it as a climate issue.

00:32They just think of it as a waste of their money and resources.

00:35But it is a massive issue from an environmental perspective.

00:39And the good news is that it's super easy to reduce your food waste at home.

00:42Food was being thrown away every day and across most food stores.

01:07It's the same food that is sold at full price five or ten minutes before.

01:11So why does the value of it go to zero at the end of the business day?

01:41So you get a bag, in this case it looks like this.

01:48I have three of these with the tomatoes in them, the packaging was a bit torn.

01:53I have a few single bananas, that's a classic when it comes to food waste.

01:57I have some pepper here, some mushrooms, some onions, some apples.

02:01We have most of the ingredients for a pie.

02:03A lot of resources went into producing this food, so it's also using up our water resources,

02:09our land, it's hurting our biodiversity, and we're doing this for no purpose if we

02:13end up throwing it away anyway.

02:24For the stores that are throwing away food every day, suddenly they have a way to actually

02:29sell that food, they get to save it, and they get new people to know about their store.

02:35And then on the consumer side, you get to do something good, it feels really nice to

02:39save a meal, and it's also a good deal that you make.

02:43And then you add a third win, which is really that it helps the planet.

03:05I think it's important that we get this connection and that food waste is a climate issue, so

03:09if we're serious about tackling that, then we also have to throw away less food at home.
