Fighting Plastic Pollution with Art

Visual artist KD Kinetic is doing what artists do — being bold. Her newest exhibit isn’t just a colorful look at a dystopian future — it’s an artistic warning cry to anyone who cares about the future of the planet.

00:00People kind of have this, um, nihilistic feeling of like, well, the earth is going to shit

00:05anyways, so whatever, but there are people that are going to have to live here when we're gone.

00:18I made this project because I didn't see my consumption growing up. I didn't see my trash

00:23until I visited New York City and I lived there for a while and I was like,

00:27this is a lot of garbage. And I feel like when we don't see things,

00:32we don't really, they don't affect us the same. And so I want people to feel

00:37the, the intensity of what we're doing to our planet through, through my art piece.

00:43And right now I have 250 feet of plastic bags tied together and one bag is about one foot

01:01of space, which was kind of a shock to me. Honestly, I was like, Oh man,

01:05this thing about how many bags we go through. I think it's helping a little bit, but this

01:08project is important because I want to ignite people's emotions toward plastic and I want to

01:13ignite their, their spirit because facts are amazing and bless the scientists,

01:18but we also got to get people riled up about it and make change.

01:30I want to show people that living a low waste and zero waste lifestyle

01:34is accessible because I feel like it has this sort of,

01:38you have to have money in order to reduce your waste when in reality you're trying to use less.

01:44I'm hopeful that over the next maybe 10 years over time, we can all grow and become consumers

01:51with a conscious and care about what we're buying and care about where it ends up and

01:58think about that before we buy.
