00:00— Why aren't we having a larger conversation about education?
00:04Why aren't we holding administrations accountable
00:06for something that, at the moment, doesn't have a national standard?
00:21— Is bullying a big problem?
00:22— It's pretty common here.
00:24— Really?
00:24— And they think,
00:25oh, it's okay, he'll just be fine.
00:28But the truth is, I'm actually not fine.
00:37— If a society has socioeconomic issues
00:41that they're not dealing with because
00:44they're not properly taxing businesses or,
00:48you know, millionaires and billionaires in their community,
00:52the school then winds up having to pick up the slack for
00:57whatever resources might not exist
00:59in communities that have been drained by
01:02these businesses that aren't paying into the sort of tax structure.
01:07It takes the entire community to be committed to those things
01:12and to understand the need for those things.
01:28— In the wake of so many school shootings,
01:31you've seen this call to do things like arm teachers
01:37and put cops in schools and bring in metal detectors.
01:41And the result of that often has been teachers and administrators
01:48either abdicating responsibility or just handing over responsibility
01:52passively to law enforcement.
01:54And what might have just been a flare-up between two students,
01:59an argument that turned into pushing and shoving,
02:02now becomes an assault charge.
02:06— We know that they may cost money, they may take effort,
02:12and we've known them for a very long time.
02:15And yet, for one reason or another,
02:19they're not doing it for us.
02:21And so, we're not going to be able to do anything about it.
02:25We're not going to be able to do anything about it.
02:28We're not going to be able to do anything about it.
02:31And yet, for one reason or another, we choose to ignore them.
02:36It feels like we could actually be doing preventative things
02:39to recognize that many kids are dealing with stressors in their life.
02:43Not every kid is going to show up and shoot up a school,
02:47but you have things like high rates of teen suicide
02:50that you could deal with.
