Space junk is floating above our heads

Used rocket parts, dying satellites... 29 000 large pieces of trash are floating above our heads.

00:30This mass is already sufficient to start what's called the Kessler Syndrome,

00:36the onset of a collisional cascading that's self-entertaining

00:40and that would render some orbit regions unusable.

01:00The aim of our mission Remove Debris is to actually go up there

01:12and test something called Active Debris Removal.

01:15It's the concept of testing technologies such as a net or a harpoon

01:19to try and capture some of this space junk and bring it back down to Earth.

01:23Virtually everything you can think of uses a satellite in some form these days

01:33and these are services that are at risk in the future

01:37if we don't take this issue of space sustainability seriously.
