00:00Fifty-one years ago, I was born with cerebral palsy and an intellectual disability.
00:07I entered a world that had low expectations for me and people like me.
00:14Judge Kavanaugh has shown that he has the same low expectations,
00:20and I'm here to tell you that he's wrong.
00:30Self-determination is a basic human right for all people with disabilities.
00:51Our country is founded on liberty and justice for all, and all means all.
00:57If Judge Kavanaugh is confirmed, I'm afraid that my right to make decisions for myself will be taken away.
01:27Reaching the Doe v. D.C. case made me very upset,
01:37because Judge Kavanaugh's decision to not respect people's rights and their freedom of choice.
01:45This is wrong.
01:47Judge Kavanaugh had a chance to stand up for the rights of the women in the case, but he failed.
01:56He said that the D.C. government did not even need to ask them what they wanted,
02:03but could decide for them what was going to happen to their bodies.
02:11In my twenties, some professionals and my parents decided to put me into a private institution.
02:21My parents loved me, but instead of treating me like an adult with opinions and preferences and asking what I wanted,
02:32they made the decision for me like I was a child.
02:37This was wrong.
02:40In the self-advocacy movement, there's a saying that we hold very dear to our heart,
02:45and that's nothing about us without us.
02:50I ask you, for myself and my community, when you vote on Judge Kavanaugh,
02:56please do not vote to turn the clock back and take the rights that I and others have fought for.
