Fighting waste and feeding those in need during Covid-19

As thousands of Americans go hungry, farmers are forced to throw away the produce they can't sell to shuttered restaurants. The Farm to Food Banks project bridges that gap.

00:28this seems like a situation that we couldn't wait for somebody else to fix.

00:34People were hungry immediately. They needed food now.

00:38The food was perishing. It was there now.

00:42And we have to do what we can.

00:45We're all being asked right now to do more than we ever have before,

00:49and we have to come together to try to make things the best that we can.

00:58I relied on some people that I know in my network.

01:08And a good friend of mine owns a sewer transportation company.

01:12It's a trucking company based in Salt Lake City.

01:14And there were potatoes in Idaho, cranny farms in Idaho.

01:18So I called Mark and I said, if I find a place to take the potatoes,

01:22a place that needs it, can you help me move them?

01:25And without hesitation, he said yes.

02:02We've had PPE donated by generous individuals to help our cause.

02:08Masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, et cetera.

02:12We've had students at Fordham Prep School in the Bronx come,

02:18use the donated funds that they had for their Build the Bronx Club,

02:22and rent U-Haul trucks so they can help with that part of the logistics.

02:27There are numerous, numerous candles that are being lit.

02:50Lots of people are saying, oh, we could use this in Texas.

02:53We could do this here.

02:55You know, longer term, what we would like to do is open source.

02:59What we're doing.

03:00And we hope people copy this.

03:03We hope people take initiative.

03:05And there are going to be people out there with even better ideas,

03:08better connections to make, and for the benefit of all of us.

03:14That would be amazing if people saw us,

03:16and they decided to do something in their own community,

03:19because the need is so great everywhere.

03:21This is the time to do whatever you can.
