The reasons for the Global Climate Strike

Millions of young people rallied together around the world as part of the Global Climate Strike. Martial Breton, a member of the movement Youth for Climate France, explains their reasons for joining the protest.

00:00The young people who were born around the 2000s

00:04are the ones who will be directly impacted in 2030, in 2050, by these deregulations.

00:10It's been decades since NGOs, associations, scientific organizations and even politicians

00:33are talking about future generations.

00:35They talk about the fact that we have to act, that we have to fight against climate change for the future generations.

00:43Except that today, climate change is going so fast, it's so fast,

00:48that the future generations are today's young generations.

00:52Youth for climate, youth for climate, youth for climate!

00:56One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten!

01:02I am a student and in this movement there are many, many high school students

01:07and high school girls. It is deplorable to see how much in their programs

01:10the climate issue is so little addressed.

01:13Above all, the climate issue as a phenomenon is a little taught,

01:18but the consequences and the causes are completely out of reach.

01:23We do not talk about it, first because it would be to provide a critical mind to young people,

01:29something that we may be afraid of.

01:31But it is true that it is disastrous that we do not offer the youngest generations

01:37the tools, the keys to understanding climate change,

01:41that we do not give them at least the possibility to understand it

01:44and therefore to prepare themselves to face the problems they will face.

01:50I have learned that you are never too small to make a difference.

01:54And if a few children can get headlines all over the world just by not going to school,

01:59then imagine what we could all do together if we really wanted to.

02:04What is the point of going to school on a dead planet?

02:07And what is the point of going to school if we have no future?

02:10As Greta Thunberg said, a lot of her messages are very strong, very impactful, very short,

02:16and she says truths that are very striking through her slogans.

02:21And in the end, this is what young people wear when millions of young people go on strike.

02:25This is what they say and which ultimately does not question the school

02:30and does not question education.

02:32On the contrary, one of the messages is to have more education for the environment on climate issues.

02:38But they say, unfortunately today, we young people are forced to fight

02:42because previous generations have left us a planet that is no longer able to ensure our future.

02:50And today's youth find themselves forced to bear this responsibility,

02:54to fight for our future because we no longer have a choice.

02:57It is a fight that we are forced to win.

02:59And so we have young people who, as many as there are, gather in the street to talk about education,

03:05to talk about change in society, on agriculture, on the economy, on transport, on everything, on energy.

03:12And who, as a result, carry this message of transforming our society.

03:16A message that comes a little from anxiety, fear, sadness, despair,

03:21but which turns into a huge energy among young people to build a better society.

03:26If we build it collectively, with two pillars, a social, democratic, citizen pillar of individuals,

03:34of humans, and an ecological pillar of biodiversity, climate and nature,

03:38inevitably, collectively, we will succeed in giving meaning back to everyone,

03:44and not only to the populations who ultimately have the means to exile themselves in Norway

03:49and live the collapse in a completely peaceful way.

03:53No, this escape must absolutely not be taken,

03:58and we must collectively say to ourselves how we find a collective solution to this problem.
