01:14
our society A mirror to all our states

Where they rank on GDP Gross Domestic Behaviour
01:30
The results will blow your mind Expect the unexpected
01:37
This never seen, never attempted socio-civic survey
01:44
on India Today Gross Domestic Behaviour
02:15
So why is it essential to gauge the Gross Domestic Behaviour of India?
02:21
While we may have ways means to measure economic growth of our country
02:25
And India is moving towards super power among that measure
02:29
India may be positioning itself to become the world's third largest economy
02:33
With a projected GDP Gross Domestic Product of 7 trillion dollars
02:39
Or roughly estimated to rupees 581 lakh crores
02:44
All of this by 2030
02:46
But and there's the big but
02:48
Its social fabric does not show a similar forward movement
02:53
And the making of a great nation is not just about economic power
02:56
With it there is a need to come a strong civic consciousness
03:01
Social correctness, exemplary public behaviour
03:04
And sadly sadly while we are zipping on the economic highway
03:08
Our socio-civic growth has been riddled with potholes
03:11
Whether we admit it or we don't
03:13
It's that one uncomfortable truth that could well prove to be that dark undertone
03:19
Our less than perfect civic conscience
03:22
To assess exactly where the country stands on that
03:25
From the India Today group in collaboration with data analytics firm How India Lives
03:31
Embarked on a first of its kind
03:33
A pioneering survey across 98 districts in 21 states and 1 union territory
03:39
Asking 9188 Indians not about their income, assets or even their politics
03:45
But about decency, empathy, integrity, gender parity, religious tolerance
03:52
A measure that we are now calling at India Today their gross domestic behaviour
03:59
And on the basis of these questions we've ranked each state
04:02
Once again before we even get into the rankings
04:05
Look at it as a mirror to our society
04:08
As a possible mirror to your state
04:10
And not as a way of one upmanship
04:13
That my state is better than yours
04:15
It's very possible some states have just been more honest than others
04:20
Let me introduce our guests
04:21
They've come from all walks of life
04:23
And today will be with us giving their opinion on how India behaves
04:28
Tavleen Singh, author, columnist with us
04:30
Kushal Mehra is the host
04:33
The Karvaka podcast
04:35
Trisha Shetty, advocate, activist for gender equality
04:38
Dilip Cherian, communication consultant, image guru
04:41
Kamlesh Singh, he's a storyteller at Teentaal, he's in the studio with me
04:45
Kaushik Dekha, executive editor, India Today magazine
04:48
Before we get on to our first question
04:50
What we've done viewers
04:52
We have asked 30 questions under 5 chapters
04:55
You can call them 5 banner heads
04:57
Be it civic consciousness, public safety
05:01
This one is gender attitude
05:03
And then we're going to also ask about
05:06
Religious tolerance, discrimination
05:10
How they look at that
05:11
Let's move to the chapter of gender attitude
05:14
Before I ask you the first question
05:16
Or I take you through the first question that was asked
05:19
I want to bring in Kaushik Dekha
05:21
Kaushik, there have to be many challenges with a survey like this
05:24
Primarily because a lot of us
05:26
You know, in principle will accept
05:29
That yes, this is not the way of being
05:32
This is correct civic consciousness
05:34
And answer in that regard
05:36
But really don't practice it when it comes down
05:39
You know, to everyday lives
05:41
This has always been the problem with surveys like this
05:44
That whenever you pose a question like
05:46
If you ask a husband, do you beat your wife?
05:49
Probably he would not say in public
05:51
Even if he does so
05:52
That he beats his wife
05:54
Or in certain cases that if you hear
05:57
If you ask people
05:58
Mostly over 90% have said that
06:01
Oh, it's important to send a girl child for education
06:06
But in a country where the Prime Minister has to run a program
06:09
To encourage people, incentivize people
06:12
To take their daughters to schools
06:14
So you know what they have said
06:16
And what exact reality is
06:19
There is a variance
06:20
But the encouraging factor, the positive factor
06:23
Is that people know what is the right thing to do
06:26
So the next probably challenge for the country as a whole
06:29
Is that we have to walk that path
06:31
You have to walk that path
06:32
So you know, if you're going to be horrified
06:33
By looking at a certain state which thinks it's ok
06:36
You know, to beat their wives
06:38
Then one must also take it with a pinch of salt
06:40
Possibly that state is just being more honest
06:42
Than the one which says that
06:43
Oh, it's a terrible crime to do so
06:45
Alright, with that let's quickly dip in
06:47
And before I do so, Kaushik, one quick word from you
06:49
Were these questions when they were asked
06:52
Were these in-person communications?
06:54
Yes, in-person, in-person communication
06:56
No telephone interview, person-to-person
06:58
And as you can see from the numbers
07:01
The gender division was equal almost
07:03
51-49%
07:05
And rural-urban divide was also almost equal
07:07
Almost the same
07:08
Alright, so with that let's quickly dip in
07:10
To the first question that we asked
07:11
Under the banner of gender attitudes
07:14
How India views gender
07:16
Is a husband justified in beating his wife
07:19
If she objects to his decision
07:21
Regarding household chores
07:23
So how has the entire India responded
07:27
The 20 states that we were talking of
07:29
83% says no, a husband should not beat their wives
07:32
Just 16% says it's ok if the husband beats his wife
07:36
If the wife doesn't agree with him
07:38
Let's look at the micro data in that
07:40
98% in Uttarakhand are opposed to
07:42
Such kind of domestic violence
07:44
31% in Andhra Pradesh says it's fine
07:48
They've backed the notion
07:49
Nothing wrong in a husband raising his hand
07:51
If his wife doesn't quite agree with him
07:53
Let's move on to the second question
07:55
Under gender attitudes
07:56
Should male members of the household
07:58
Have the final say in major household matters
08:02
This is how India views it
08:05
At the cross-domestic behavior
08:07
69% say yes
08:09
30% say no to that question
08:14
Look at the micro data in that
08:16
75% in Kerala are opposed to
08:18
Male members having the final say in household matters
08:21
And look at the other part
08:23
96%
08:25
Because 96% of UP thinks that's the case
08:30
Ultimately the decision making lies
08:32
With the head of the family
08:34
And de facto the head of the family
08:36
Will be a male member
08:39
Just look at that number there
08:41
The second, third question that was asked
08:43
Should a woman be free to marry
08:46
Whomever she wants
08:47
Even against the wishes of her parents
08:50
32% say yes
08:52
67% say no
08:55
Out of which 67% in Kerala
08:58
Think women should be free to marry
09:00
Against the wishes of their parents
09:02
A whopping 92% in Chandigarh
09:05
Say absolutely not, nothing doing
09:07
The parents have to confirm
09:09
Only then a woman should
09:11
Pick her partner in marriage
09:13
Very honest some would think
09:15
Very worrisome the others would think
09:17
Should a woman be free
09:19
The other question that was posed
09:21
Should a woman be free to make decisions
09:23
About using the money she earns
09:25
Without requiring approval from male family members
09:27
69% of India
09:29
69% of India says
09:31
Of course it's her money, she's made it
09:33
31% say no
09:35
She needs to confirm with her family members
09:37
Whether she needs to spend this money
09:39
Or where she wants to spend it
09:40
Microdata
09:42
91% in Kerala
09:44
Who have posed this question say
09:46
Women are free to handle their money
09:48
With ever which they want
09:50
A whopping 70% in Odisha say
09:53
Women should take her family's approval
09:56
Before making any expenditure
09:59
Just let that sink in
10:01
You know it's interesting
10:03
Because look at the parity in terms of
10:05
States that think that it's alright
10:07
That a woman should be beaten
10:09
A woman should not make her own decisions
10:11
The woman should confirm with family members
10:13
Before she marries
10:15
Once again it's a mirror to society
10:17
It's not to shame and name a particular state
10:19
Alright the other question that was asked
10:21
Should female members of the family
10:23
Be encouraged to take up a job
10:25
Outside their homes
10:27
84% of India
10:29
Said of course what's wrong with that
10:31
Let them take a job outside homes
10:33
15% say no they need to be at home
10:35
There is no working outside for women
10:37
Microdata
10:39
98%
10:41
You know it's very interesting
10:43
Because you know
10:45
There are two pieces of data which we'll talk about later
10:47
98% in Uttar Pradesh
10:49
Are willing to encourage
10:51
Their daughters to take up jobs
10:53
Outside their home
10:55
While 38% in Gujarat
10:57
Are opposed to this idea
10:59
Which is very interesting
11:01
There was an earlier question
11:03
When asked about women
11:05
On who should take the final decision
11:07
With what I was talking about
11:09
The contradiction in Uttar Pradesh
11:11
96% in UP had said
11:13
A male member will take that decision
11:15
But in this regard
11:17
Whether a woman should work outside home
11:19
98% in Uttar Pradesh
11:21
Says that yeah she's free to take that decision
11:23
Understandably 96% of the men
11:25
Have given them
11:27
The liberty or the permission
11:29
To take this particular number
11:31
Should
11:33
Should daughters in the family
11:35
Be encouraged to study or pursue education
11:37
As much as their sons
11:39
We still live in a country
11:41
Where money is spent more on the son's education
11:43
And a daughter's education is an afterthought
11:45
Whether we like it or not
11:47
However 93% of India says yes
11:49
93% of India
11:51
Says same amount of money
11:53
Should be spent on a daughter and a son
11:55
It's only 6% which says nothing doing
11:57
Sons are more important than daughters
11:59
Break it down 98%
12:01
In Odisha believe daughters have the same
12:03
Right to education while
12:05
22% in Gujarat don't agree
12:07
With this notion 22%
12:09
Says nothing doing a son is more important
12:11
Ultimately
12:13
Alright now let that sink in
12:15
Viewers let's get you
12:17
The last final question which was asked
12:19
Should women vote for the same candidate
12:21
As the male members of their family
12:23
51%
12:25
Say yes a woman should
12:27
What the male members of the family
12:29
Want in terms of where to
12:31
Vote 48% know that
12:33
She owns her own
12:35
Vote and she should go and cast it
12:37
Where she wants to microdata
12:39
93% in Kerala want women to make
12:41
Their own voting choices
12:43
A whopping 91%
12:45
In Uttar Pradesh say
12:47
Women should vote for the same candidate
12:49
As the men in their
12:51
Family well you know at least
12:53
Where voting is concerned women have
12:55
You know sprung up a surprise or two
12:57
In many states now a vote bank
12:59
That doesn't quite follow gender stereotypes
13:01
But having said that
13:03
We put in all the questions there
13:05
Startling revelations before we
13:07
Actually tabulate
13:09
The data and bring to you
13:11
On where states stand
13:13
In terms where it comes down
13:15
