No power banks in overhead compartments, say Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and MASWings

Effective April 1, all passengers travelling with Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and MASwings must carry their power banks on-person at all times, according to a statement issued by Malaysia Aviation Group this week. 00:00Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Mazwings have joined other airlines in updating their policies

00:08on carrying power banks on board, following several fire incidents involving power banks

00:13and lithium-ion batteries during flights.

00:20The airline said all passengers travelling with the three carriers must carry their power

00:25banks on person at all times, effective April 1st.

00:29It said the power banks should not be placed in the overhead compartments.

00:33Travellers are required to store the power bank in their carry-on bag under the seat,

00:39or in the seat pocket in front of them.

00:41Magnetic wireless charging power banks must be kept in a separate bag or protective pouch

00:47to prevent unintentional activation.

00:49The carriers also prohibit charging or using power banks throughout the flight, and travellers

00:55are not allowed to store power banks and spare lithium-ion batteries in check-in baggage.

01:01Power banks were previously banned from check-in luggage and allowed only in carry-on baggage,

01:07but the new rules require passengers to carry them on person at all times.

01:13It is also in line with regulations imposed by South Korea's aviation authorities following

01:18the incident in January, which saw an Air Busan aircraft being severely damaged by a

01:25fire at the Gimhae International Airport in Busan.

01:29Last week, South Korea's transport ministry said findings of an interim investigation

01:34revealed that the fire was possibly caused by a spare power bank.

01:39It said scorch marks on the debris of the power bank where the fire was first detected

01:44indicate the fire may have started because insulation inside the battery had broken down.
