00:00
Just a few days after her filly Torpedo Anna won the Kentucky Oaks, it was back to business
00:05
as usual for breeder Judy Hicks.
00:08
She took a break from her work at Brookstown Farm to introduce us to Torpedo Anna's
00:12
dam, Sotavius, and a few other family members.
00:15
Fortunately, three days before the Oaks, my last mare foaled, so that was a relief.
00:23
It's been surreal, it's been, I mean it had to be business as usual, I think Saturday
00:29
morning I had to take a mare to the breeding shed.
00:31
The reality, I don't think, has still sunk in.
00:36
And having the mare and a baby and a half-sister makes it even that much more exciting for
00:43
what's to come with the whole family, not just with Anna.
00:47
You know, Sotavius was born here.
00:49
Sotavius was very, very premature and very small.
00:53
We were not sure if her lungs were even going to function.
00:57
And she took several years to grow up.
01:01
And as you see, she's got body of Uncle Mo, but legs of a pony.
01:06
Her first foal was Charlie O, by tourist.
01:10
Her second foal was Torpedo Anna.
01:14
This is her fourth foal, the known agenda.
01:17
After the storm, I've already named her.
01:19
Torpedo Anna, as a foal, was very difficult.
01:23
She had a mind of her own, and she didn't want her feet trimmed.
01:28
She didn't want to have vaccinations.
01:30
She was pretty opinionated.
01:33
And I sold her at the sale.
01:34
That's where Kenny bought her.
01:35
I went over to him and thanked him for buying her.
01:39
And I said, I didn't think I wanted to sell her, because I think she was a good one.
01:42
Can I stay in?
01:43
And he said, sure.
01:45
Her very first start, he called me and said, are you going to be at Keeneland?
01:50
And I go, sure.
01:51
He said, well, you better be, because she's going to win, and she's going to probably
01:54
win going away.
01:57
Her fourth race was the Fantasy.
01:59
I had commitments here at the farm with my clients, folding mares, so I chose not to
02:04
go.
02:05
You could have heard me screaming in Versailles when she won in the Fantasy.
02:09
And then, of course, the Oaks kind of speaks for itself.
02:12
The way she ran, it was hard to contain myself.
02:15
And my tears were flowing, but it was unbelievable.
02:19
It was unbelievable, because we know how good she is.
02:22
A typical day, I live in the middle of my farm.
02:25
I live and breathe the horses.
02:27
I kind of close the gates and everything.
02:29
I leave everything behind me, because, as we all know, the thoroughbred business can
02:32
be tough.
02:35
And I just enjoy my life.
02:37
I enjoy my animals.
02:39
I work very hard, and I take every mare myself to the breeding shed.
02:45
People say, when are you going to retire, Judy?
02:46
I said, what would I do then?
02:49
I feel that I run a good operation.
02:52
It's not fancy, but it does seem to work.
02:57
Now, walking outside and having this feeling of fulfillment, because what I've done.
03:03
But I don't feel it's like anything out of the ordinary.
03:06
It just happened.
03:08
And I'm still having to just, hey, get it in your head that this really happened, and
03:14
it's special.
03:15
And it'll be an occasion I will remember for the rest of my life.
