00:00Representatives from Turkey, Greece, the UK, EU and the Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders
00:07met in Geneva to discuss the possibility of reopening negotiations and reunification of
00:13the Mediterranean island.
00:15Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, when Turkish forces invaded and occupied the northern
00:21parts of the island.
00:23United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres is hosting talks in the Imposun Palais de
00:28Nation in Geneva to discuss the future of Cyprus with Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders
00:34and representatives from Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom, which are the guarantor
00:40states.
00:41During the talks, the representatives will explore the possibility of reopening negotiations
00:46for a solution.
00:48The island remains divided and occupied more than 50 years after the invasion of the Turkish
00:53forces.
00:55While supporters of a solution value the mere convening of the meeting, they acknowledge
01:00that expectations are very low.
01:03According to Turkish diplomatic sources, the meeting is expected to discuss views on the
01:07Cyprus issue for the upcoming period and is not meant to be a continuation of past negotiation
01:14processes or the beginning of a new negotiation process.
01:19On the other hand, shortly before departing for Geneva, the President of the Republic
01:24of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, spoke of limited expectations, but at the same time
01:29he said that during the talks they should exploit all the possibilities for reopening
01:35the negotiations.
01:36Whether this is a meeting that will confirm the gap in the views of the two sides or pave
01:41the way for new talks remains to be seen in the next hours when the two sides show their
01:48cards.
