00:00Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev says global stability won't be achieved in the coming
00:06months or even years as the world enters a new order.
00:10Euronews spoke to President Aliyev on the sidelines of the 12th Global Baku Forum.
00:16We're seeing a lot of geopolitical changes around the world. Where do you stand on the
00:22significant ones that we're seeing, especially around this region?
00:26Well, in the region, of course, it's important to protect the region from any crises around
00:32us. Unfortunately, the region of Southern Caucasus for decades was an area of confrontation
00:39and hostility. So now we have relatively quiet period, so we need to concentrate on that
00:47to build security mechanisms that will be inclusive, to eliminate any threat of another
00:57military confrontation, and to try to live in neighborhood as we used to in the times
01:06of Soviet Union. Yes, we were not independent countries. We could not actually plan our
01:12future. We were largely dependent on the Soviet centre, but at least there was active
01:20interaction between the Southern Caucasian republics. So we have this experience and
01:27we need to just keep it in our mind.
01:31Aliyev was not, however, optimistic about the concept of lasting peace, particularly
01:36with regard to Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.
01:40In terms of your vision for the future, where do you see this global stability going eventually?
01:48Do you think we will achieve it?
01:50I prefer to be realistic. I don't think that we will achieve stability in the coming months
01:58or even coming years. And if we talk about war between Russia and Ukraine, even if the
02:05war stops, it is not a guarantee that it will not erupt again. We had a time for almost
02:1430 years when we had ceasefire agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which was achieved
02:20spring 1994. But that didn't mean that war ended. It just transformed. And the war only
02:29ends when you have peace agreement. Even now, after almost five years since the Second Karabakh
02:35War, we don't have peace deal with Armenia. Yes, we have quiet period, no casualties,
02:41and this is a big advantage of today's situation. But until peace agreement is signed, the stability
02:47is not here.
02:49More than 300 world leaders from over 60 countries have gathered at the forum, where they will
02:54spend the next few days exploring solutions to address global challenges in health, conflict
03:00and the economy.
