00:00It is a quiet night at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where Pope Francis has been battling
00:07pneumonia and a complex lung infection for the past week.
00:11But according to latest statements from the Vatican, the 88-year-old pontiff is now also
00:15in an early stage of kidney failure.
00:20Pope Francis remains in critical conditions and doctors say that he is showing the early
00:24signs of kidney failure, but that it is under control.
00:28They say he has had no more of those crises, those respiratory crises that dogged him all
00:34day Saturday.
00:36He is continuing though to receive high flows of supplemental oxygen.
00:40They say he is alert, responsive and even managed to attend mass today, but the prognosis
00:47remains guarded.
00:49Pope Francis was initially hospitalized on 14 February for bronchitis.
00:54He then developed pneumonia in both lungs.
00:56Concern for the head of the Catholic Church also stems from the fact that he had part
01:00of one lung removed when he was younger.
01:03The Pope has experienced a series of health problems over the past few years, ranging
01:07from respiratory infections to colon surgery.
01:11His current hospital stay is the fourth one since 2021.
01:14Meanwhile, prayers and messages of solidarity for Francis poured in from Catholics around
01:20the world.
