Each April New Orleans becomes the home of groups of traveling pirates from all over the country. These pirates or pyrates, as they are sometimes called, gather for Pyrate Week (Pirate Week.) Pyrate Week coincides with PirateCon, an annual Pirate Convention, but is not affiliated with PirateCon. Like most original pirates, the pirates that gather for Pyrate Week in New Orleans are independent in nature and prefer the loose affiliation with other pirates that Pyrate Week provides.
The pirates who arrive in New Orleans for Pyrate Week often spend their days helping to rebuild New Orleans through volunteerism with various local groups, such as LowerNine.org and the Green Project. Though they give back to New Orleans during the day, they party like pirates at night. The R Bar in the Marginy provides a natural gathering place for these later-day pirates. Sometimes known as the ARRRR Bar, the R Bar welcomes patrons in all manner of dress and disposition through out the year.
A Pirate Parade followed the gathering at the R Bar and and included several Johnny Depp impersonators.
