Hong Kong's Democratic Party has announced plans to disband. Established in 1994, it became the territory's main opposition group. Several party members have been jailed under Hong Kong's National Security Law.

00:09Developing democracy in Hong Kong is always difficult, and it's especially difficult in

00:17the past few years. We see a lot of civil society groups or political parties disbanding

00:23or dissolving. This is not what we wanted to see.

00:29The Democratic Party was founded in 1994 and became the primary opposition party in

00:35the territory. Since China introduced a national security law in 2020, Hong Kong's pro-democracy

00:42movement has come under more pressure. The law restricts anti-China political activities

00:48while promoting so-called patriotic leaders. Several members of the Democratic Party, including

00:55one of its former chairs, have been jailed under the security law.
