Sunderland must “fail” to learn and grow says Régis Le Bris

Sunderland Head Coach Régis Le Bris has outlined the importance of failure in sport, to help his players learn and grow in their pursuit of promotion. Daniel Wales reports.

00:00Sunderland's young squad have fought their way through an arduous season so far, full

00:05of highs and lows, that has left them challenging for automatic promotion from the Championship

00:10back to the Premier League. The loss against Leeds on Monday was not ideal, but they are

00:15a side who must become used to facing adversity. Regis Labrisa and his side are constantly

00:21learning in this league, and against Leeds they faced a side who demonstrated just why

00:26they are sat at the top of the Championship table, having not lost in the league since

00:30November. Sunderland tested their resolve, but ultimately came up short on this occasion.

00:37Labrisa was certainly complimentary of Leeds, but also of his own team's performance.

00:44We learned a lot from the strong opponents, because they can push our limits, and I think

00:53it was really useful for that. It showed that we were really consistent in some parts

00:59of the game, so it's good to say it again, because for example our triangles were really

01:07impressive during this game. On the other side, we know that with these good qualities

01:16in possession, this pressure they can impose, we have to learn from these experiences to

01:25find new ways to build up the game for example, so every opponent, especially the stronger

01:33I think, are useful to learn. Many of Sunderland's players have demonstrated

01:38maturity beyond their years this season, but just how have they taken the loss against

01:43a promotion rival such as Leeds United? I think they were OK. It's still difficult

01:50to lose a game, especially a strong fixture like that, because they worked a lot and they

02:02gave a great amount of energy during this game, so after that you have 24, 48 hours

02:09to recover and we have to accept that. This morning was OK and I'm sure they will be ready

02:15for the next fixture. That next fixture is Hull City at home, with

02:20Lebris outlining that this is the time for leaders to step up and be counted, with failure

02:26needed to learn and to grow. Yes, sure, because you need positive and negative

02:32experiences to grow and if they want to have a great career, they will have low points

02:42in their learning course and I think the better players, the best players are these ones.

02:48They can suffer, they can fail, but at the same time they can learn very quickly and

02:55be back to their best level.
