00:00It's now official. European Union scientists have declared that 2023 was the warmest year
00:10on record and 2024 may actually be even worse. If you look at the various climate events
00:16of the last year, you could see that this was coming. You had wildfires, the worst in
00:21fact that Canada had ever seen. Wildfires in Greece, very, very high temperatures in
00:27Europe exceeding 40 degrees Celsius continuously for many days. In many parts of America, there
00:33were some places that recorded close to 50 degrees Celsius as well, which is extremely,
00:38extremely hot. And then you had other kinds of freak weather from a lack of snow in many
00:42places. Even now, as I speak here in Gulmarg in Kashmir, which is a ski resort, there has
00:48been no snow at all. It's completely green and normally by this time you have people
00:52on the slopes. And there are many other parts of the world which are facing a similar phenomenon.
00:57The point is that the climate change crisis is something that is affecting us now. This
01:03is not something that's affecting future generations. Scientists believe that the latest report
01:07might spur countries to act more quickly on phasing out fossil fuels. Yes, there was an
01:13agreement on doing just that at the recently concluded COP28 summit. But the fact is that
01:18agreement doesn't go far enough because there are no obligations on any country to follow
01:24what was agreed upon. So until there are legal obligations in place and goals in place which
01:31are realistic, it looks like the climate change crisis is only set to get worse in the years ahead.
