Beavers released Rushden Lakes

Beavers released at Rushden Lakes nature reserve owned by Wildlife Trust for Beds, Cambs and Northants. The Scottish beavers will make their home in a fenced enclosure near the River Nene.

03:00Today we're going to be releasing eight beavers.

03:02They're coming from Scotland.

03:03The Beaver Trust are bringing them down

03:05and this is part of a reintroduction project.

03:07They're going to come and live here,

03:09a delta pit at Neame Wetlands.

03:11There's going to be a mum and a dad.

03:13The mum, named Boudica,

03:16she's apparently a bit of a fighter.

03:18She'd lost a leg when she was young in a fight,

03:21but she's battled on.

03:23And dad, Alan, named after a local funny man,

03:27Alan Carr, and six young,

03:31so three kits and then three yearlings,

03:33which are from the year before.

03:36And they're going to be introduced

03:38into this enclosure, 17 hectare enclosure,

03:42here at Neame Wetlands.

03:44And this fence surrounds Delta Pit,

03:47which is going to be their new home.

03:49And then we expect them to make a lodge

03:52and just start exploring their surroundings.

03:55And then what they'll probably do is,

03:58they eat trees, they gnaw trees and bark,

04:01and they will help us really to manage this habitat.

04:05So they'll be creating a kind of a diverse

04:08flora and fauna mix in here for us,

04:11which is what we'd have to do anyway in the long term.

04:13So they're really helping us to manage this habitat

04:16for nature.

04:18So members of the public will be able to walk past,

04:20they'll be able to see into the enclosure,

04:21and we'll have information boards all about it.

04:23We've got a visitor centre nearby,

04:25and we've got cameras inside the enclosure.

04:27So we're going to be sharing those clips

04:31on our website and our visitor centre.

04:33If you come along on any given day,

04:36you may not be able to see them because

04:38they are nocturnal and they are quite secretive.

04:40You may, you might be able to if you're lucky.

04:43But yeah, we've got to promise anyone

04:45who does definitely see them.

04:47But there's lots of opportunities that we're going to have

04:50to share video clips and stories all about them.

04:53So people will be able to follow their stories online.
