With the U-turn of Poland's public funding for IVF treatment, all EU member states now support this fertility treatment. However, the conditions and waiting times vary among the 27.

00:00How are fertility treatments handled around the EU?
00:08In the European Union, 25 million citizens face infertility. In 2025, Poland welcomed its first
00:15baby after the government reversed a 2015 decision to slash public funding for IVF treatment.
00:22This change ensured that all EU member states now provide public funding for IVF. However,
00:29only five out of 27 EU countries offer full funding or reimbursement for six IVF treatments.
00:37After six treatments, only Austria, Denmark, Estonia and France provide partial funding and
00:43waiting lists can go up to a year. The average cost of an IVF cycle in Europe is between €4,000
00:50and €5,000. Access to IVF also varies depending on the couple's sexuality.
00:56Heterosexual couples can access fertility treatments in all EU countries using their
01:01own gametes or donated sperm. Germany and Luxembourg are the only countries that don't
01:07allow heterosexual couples to access IVF with donated eggs. Meanwhile, male couples cannot
01:13access fertility treatment in 24 EU countries except in Belgium, the Netherlands and Romania.
01:20Female couples can receive fertility treatments with donated sperm
01:24in 15 EU countries and with donated eggs in 13 countries.
