Trump Says Putin, Zelenskyy Agree to Negotiations to End Ukraine War

U.S. President Donald Trump says negotiations to find an end to the Ukraine war will begin immediately, after a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

00:06In a 90-minute phone call, US President Donald Trump spoke with his Russian counterpart Vladimir

00:12Putin.

00:13Trump says Putin agreed to begin negotiations to bring the war in Ukraine to an end, after

00:18almost three years of fighting.

00:21We had a very good talk.

00:23People didn't really know what President Putin's thoughts were.

00:29I think I can say with great confidence he wants to see it ended also.

00:33That's good.

00:34And we're going to work toward getting it ended, and as fast as possible.

00:39Trump says negotiations to find a lasting peace will begin immediately, and a temporary

00:43ceasefire could be the first step towards achieving that goal.

00:47The leaders also agreed to meet in person, extending invitations to the respected countries.

00:53But they're expected to first meet in Saudi Arabia.

00:57Shortly after talking to Putin, Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

01:02But there have been concerns any deal brokered by Trump could force Ukraine to make significant

01:29concessions, including surrendering territory and abandoning ambitions of joining the NATO

01:35military alliance.

01:37Those fears all but confirmed by the US Defence Secretary at a meeting of Ukraine's allies

01:42at the NATO headquarters in Brussels.

01:44We must start by recognising that returning to Ukraine's pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic

01:51objective.

01:52Hegseth went on to say the US believes NATO membership is unlikely, but that any durable

01:57peace agreement must include security measures to prevent the conflict reigniting.

02:02While Ukraine is yet to address these outcomes, European allies have called for negotiations

02:07to involve them and Ukraine, vowing to enhance their support for Kyiv until a lasting peace

02:12is reached.

02:14Ukrainians in New York voiced their concerns as well.

02:16We want to make sure that the internationally recognised borders of Ukraine are respected.

02:22We want to make sure that the interests of the free democratic world are also maintained.

02:28But as battle rages on between Ukraine and Russia, in what has become Europe's bloodiest

02:32conflict since World War II, Trump's diplomatic push is the biggest effort to secure peace

02:37since the fighting started.
