First Emirati astronaut’s space flight on September 25

Watch Emirati astronaut Hazzaa AlMansoori’s first space flight, he became UAE’s first astronaut in space. The Soyuz MS-15 is headed to the International Space Station and is expected to make a rendezvous and dock by 12am UAE time.

00:57Behind me is the Soyuz spacecraft that will soon take Emirati astronaut Haza Al-Mansouri

01:02into space, making him the first Emirati astronaut to enter the International Space Station.

01:15This is Janice Ponce de Leon reporting for Gulf News Live from Baikonur Cosmodrome.

01:28Just to tell you a bit about the launch sequence using the Soyuz rocket, right now Haza Al-Mansouri

01:34is already strapped in his seat along with Russian commander Oleg Skripochka and NASA

01:40astronaut Jessica Meir.

01:43It's now 5.38 Kazakhstan time, or Baikonur time, and it would be around 4.38 in the UAE.

01:53The crew will be waiting inside the spacecraft for about two hours before liftoff.

01:59In Kazakhstan that will be 6.56, but in the UAE that will be 5.56 p.m.

02:05So as soon as they liftoff, the first stage, so this is a three-stage rocket, the first

02:10stage will burn off in about 1 minute and 58 seconds, after which it will separate from

02:17the rocket.

02:20The Soyuz rocket is a three-stage rocket, giving it three stages of thrust at various

02:25points during the flight to space.

02:30So it takes about 1 minute and 58 seconds for the first stage to burn off, following

02:36which it will be jettisoned, but before it is ejected, the second stage will burn off.

02:42So they use a hot stage technique wherein they switch on the next stage first before

02:49cutting off the engine for the first stage.

02:52Now it will take about 8 minutes and 48 minutes for all the three stages to burn up, and by

02:58then the crew will feel a final jolt before they feel weightless and experience zero gravity.

03:06So that means they've reached an altitude of about 210 kilometers, and by this time

03:11they will have reached a distance of 1,640 kilometers by land.

03:16By the time they reach that 9-minute mark, you will see the stuffed toys hanging over

03:21their heads inside the cockpit, floating around.

03:25That means they're already in space, and the six-hour chase to the International Space

03:31Station will begin.

03:32Docking will take place at midnight in the UAE, and there will be another two-hour wait

03:37to make sure that the air pressure and everything else is correct before the hatch will be opened

03:44and the new crew members will be allowed inside the ISS.
