00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News update for Tuesday, August 23. Here are the top stories
00:08at this hour.
00:09The Dubai government-owned developer Naqeel is now debt-free after paying off a 4.4 billion
00:16dirham sukook. Naqeel said it met all its sukook payoff from internal funds. The payment
00:22has been put up with Deutsche Bank, which will be disbursing it to the sukook holders.
00:26The latest payoff closes Naqeel's far-reaching restructuring programme that was launched
00:32in 2010 in the aftermath of the Dubai property market turmoil in 2009.
00:37Donald Trump has urged the US Justice Department to investigate if donors to the Clinton Foundation
00:43got special treatment from the State Department when it was run by Hillary Clinton.
00:49The Republican presidential contender made the appeal at a rally before thousands of
00:53cheering supporters in Ohio. He accused former President Bill Clinton and his wife and Democratic
01:00rival of turning the Clinton Foundation charity into a pay-for-play scheme in which wealthy
01:05donors got favours from the State Department during Hillary Clinton's tenure from 2009
01:11to 2013.
01:13South Africa's ruling African National Congress has lost control of the economic hub of Johannesburg
01:19for the first time since the end of apartheid. Herman Mashaba of the Liberal-Centre-Right
01:24Democratic Alliance takes over from incumbent mayor and ANC candidate Pax Tau. The results
01:31comes just days after the ruling party was also booted from power in the capital, Pretoria.
01:37US swimmer Ryan Lochte's four commercial sponsors have dropped the 12-time Olympic medal winner
01:44in response to the incident last week in which he falsely claimed he and three teammates
01:49had been held up by armed robbers at a Rio de Janeiro gas station. The decisions by Speedo,
01:56Ralph Lauren, Airweave and Gentle Hair Removal came after Lochte admitted to over-exaggerating
02:01the armed robbery claim. Lochte, meanwhile, said he would continue to swim even if sanctioned
02:08by the US Olympic Committee for his lack of honesty.
02:12Troubled US star Lindsay Lohan has demanded a meeting with President Vladimir Putin in
02:17return for appearing on a Russian chat show, its host said. US entertainment news site
02:22TMZ earlier said that Lohan sent Russian Channel 1 television a list of demands including a
02:29meet with Putin and photos with him as well as a private jet, a one-year visa and a fee
02:34of £500,000.
02:37For weather, today's high across the UAE will be 43 degrees Celsius, dropping to 32 degrees
