00:00This came as a surprise, but come to think of it, there's not much difference in cultures.
00:16So the tendency would be that people would like it.
00:20They don't talk much.
00:22They just want pictures.
00:24They just want pictures and they want to shy away and giggle and that's it.
00:29It's pretty sweet.
00:34This guy sounds really good, but how do I answer that?
00:38What Indian language do you not know?
00:40Do you know Telugu?
00:41I don't know Telugu.
00:42Okay, so if I was to record this interview for you and put a Telugu voice in there, that's exactly how it feels.
00:48It's funny to me, but the guy is doing a good job.
00:52In case you minus the words and it becomes only the sound for you, the voice really matches the character.
01:00I know what people want me to say.
01:03People want me to say that it was me and Sanaya and our chemistry and all of that stuff, which is true.
01:08It's true in that only dynamic.
01:11There's a million other dynamics as well.
01:13Yes, we might be a good-looking couple or well-enacting, probably good actors, if I may take the liberty of saying, compared to the other people.
01:24But at the same time, we couldn't do the job of the direction department.
01:28We couldn't do the job of the writers.
01:29We couldn't do the job of the producers for that matter, or anybody for that matter, even a spot guy, if I was getting any help from someone.
01:37There has to be everyone, I'd say.
01:39For me to say something that's going to look good on screen or for an emotion to come out, it has to be written.
01:46Otherwise, I couldn't come out and start saying my own thing.
01:50It wouldn't make any sense.
01:52Why do I want to miss out the good stuff that's on TV?
01:54I mean, a character has to be good.
01:56That's what I'm saying.
01:57A show has to be good.
01:58There's a few makers that I have an enormous amount of trust in.
02:01And I'm sure that they will make good stuff.
02:04So, yeah, the medium doesn't matter to me.
02:06The content has to be challenging, intriguing.
02:12I should know I have things to do that I've not either figured out by myself or things that I've not done so far, but I know can do well.
02:22So, I think that's that.
02:24Nothing to do with TV or films.
02:30I think you want to ask me, what would you prefer, being a star or an actor?
02:34I came here to act, yeah.
02:38First, an actor.
02:40First, an actor.
02:42That's the only mandate I have.
02:44I mean, my own conscience won't allow me to carry on doing films that I thought were bad but were making a lot of money.
02:56Professionally?
02:57I have no idea, man.
02:59I have no idea.
03:00I have no idea.
03:01I have no idea.
03:02I'm actually...
03:05Let's say, practically answering that, a lot is going to depend on what kind of cinema the audience in India is responding to.
03:16Practically, that is.
03:17Hopefully, I want to be...
03:23Actually, I'm doing that right now.
03:24I mean, if I was going to say, I want to keep doing the films that I only want to do.
03:30Whatever I have in my storage right now is stuff that I'm really, really proud of.
03:35So, okay.
03:36I'm okay being Varun Sobti in five years from now.
