00:07:39I don't know.
00:07:43I don't know.
00:07:44I don't know.
00:08:10I don't know.
00:08:10Because you know, then I'm doing his job.
00:08:12The only way sort of was down after doing so well.
00:08:15And when you look at it, it's not often a manager has to replace somebody that was doing well.
00:08:18They had good results.
00:08:20And it'd been working.
00:08:21So why would you want to change that?
00:08:22You know?
00:08:23They've won four out the last five games.
00:08:25And it's not just the wins.
00:08:28It's the philosophy and the style of play.
00:08:30Which I think we all agree is being refreshing and you know, we've enjoyed it.
00:08:35I can't believe how hard it must have been for him just to step in there.
00:08:38I'm sure the job was always a dream for him, but not in these circumstances.
00:08:43It's not going to be easy. I know that. It never is.
00:08:48Certainly in this situation, maybe a little bit more difficult,
00:08:51but it's something I'm prepared for.
00:08:53If I didn't think I could affect the situation, I wouldn't have taken the job.
00:08:57I suppose Gary Speed's legacy will be what happens next, in a sense. Is that right?
00:09:03I knew it would be tough, but I didn't think it would be as hard as it became, you know?
00:09:09It just seemed a bit, I don't want to be disrespectful, but a bit meaningless to play football.
00:09:14It was just, well, what's the point?
00:09:16You know, even in the office, in Cardiff, sitting in the office, certainly in the early days,
00:09:20I didn't like to sit in the chair. I didn't like to be in that office by myself.
00:09:24You know, Speedo had been there only a month or whatever, two months before.
00:09:28We didn't have that drive, and we all wanted to because we wanted to do it for him.
00:09:33But at the same time, it seemed like we couldn't, you know, we didn't have enough.
00:09:37We just didn't have enough inside of us to get going again.
00:09:43The nation was in mourning. Certainly the players were in mourning as well.
00:09:49And I was pushing the players, I think, too hard.
00:09:52What I should have been a bit more understanding of what they were going through as well.
00:10:01You know, results weren't good.
00:10:03And that wasn't nothing to do with the players, it was everything to do with me.
00:10:07The atmosphere in the camp wasn't great at times.
00:10:10You know, I came into the camp for the first time for the Serbia game,
00:10:14where we lost 6-1, and you could still feel the burden.
00:10:18One of the persons I would have spoke to in a situation like that would have been him.
00:10:24Of course you can't, he's not there.
00:10:27I didn't have enough courage to change what he'd been doing around to what I wanted to do.
00:10:36I remember travelling back from the game on the bus, completely lost in my thoughts.
00:10:44It just hits you and you say, right, that's it.
00:10:47That's the end of that.
00:10:50I had to stand up really and start being myself more and show a bit of courage
00:10:56and do exactly what I wanted to do rather than what Speedy was doing.
00:11:01You know, I spoke to one or two members of my immediate staff
00:11:04about, you know, changing this and changing that, and they were sceptical.
00:11:08But I was adamant that it was the way to go.
00:11:10And of course the big thing was to change Aaron with Ashley, the captain.
00:11:17I knew Aaron was very close with Speeds, but I could see it having an effect on his game
00:11:21on the pitch, which was the last thing we needed.
00:11:25And yeah, maybe I was one of the most affected in the team.
00:11:29Looking back now, I think it was the right thing to do probably
00:11:32and help me, you know, overcome that.
00:11:36Everyone always asks, like, what was it like of Aaron?
00:11:38And it was completely fine.
00:11:39You know, I've seen him.
00:11:40When we returned up to the next camp, we just didn't even mention it, to be honest.
00:11:45We've never mentioned it.
00:11:46Aaron could have gone another way.
00:11:49Had he taken a different approach, shown a different attitude towards
00:11:54Ashley getting the captaincy, we probably wouldn't have achieved
00:11:58what we've just achieved because he is that important to us, Aaron, you know.
00:12:26He needs to make it into his team, which he has, and this is Chris Coleman's team.
00:12:38Now or never?
00:12:40No, it's not now or never.
00:12:41You know, the teams in the future can qualify whenever, but, you know,
00:12:44for this group now, I think the time's perfect, the time's right, we're settled.
00:12:49We want to get it done this time.
00:12:50We needed the first game to get the campaign up and running.
00:12:54We needed to get the win, no matter how we did it.
00:13:03I wasn't saying, you know, we've got to finish first or second.
00:13:06I just thought after five or six games, if we're third, we're going to shout.
00:13:13And it was all about making sure we were in touching distance, and that meant we needed
00:13:19to stay in games.
00:13:26We're not going to settle.
00:13:27There's not going to be a campaign where we settle for nearly doing it, and I'm a pat
00:13:31on the back for nearly doing it.
00:13:33This has to be we've done it.
00:13:35I just felt we were too nice.
00:13:37And we are, as a nation.
00:13:38The Welsh people are nice people.
00:13:40If we need to play ugly for ten minutes, that's what we do.
00:13:44That's what teams do to us.
00:13:46Teams don't come to Cardiff and lie down for us.
00:13:49And when we go to their backyard, they make it as difficult as they can for us.
00:13:53The biggest impact, I would argue, was the fans.
00:13:57They got stronger and stronger, believed even more, carried us through difficult moments
00:14:02in games.
00:14:04I could sense the excitement, sort of the passion was really there.
00:14:07That's when we really started to take off, because the fans were unbelievable.
00:14:13And I did that because they saw what the players were bringing.
00:14:16It was the fact that they looked at the players who were ready, ready for anything, ready for
00:14:21the challenge, ready to do anything for Wales.
00:14:24And it was definitely a switch that went on and everybody's thinking that, you know, we're
00:14:30on to something here.
00:14:31Everything just seemed like it was in the right place.
00:14:34And every game, getting that bit more belief, that bit more momentum.
00:14:37And this team was just realising exactly what we were capable of doing.
00:14:41Mark gave me the news, and I forgot to actually borrow anything else.
00:14:46I just wanted to go over to where our boys were, all our supporters were.
00:14:50The players all joined in.
00:14:52What does this mean for Wales, for these people, Chris?
00:14:55It means everything.
00:14:56They've dreamed of, we've all dreamed of all this.
00:15:01This is what it's all about.
00:15:02This is what we've always wanted.
00:15:03We're going to the tournament.
00:15:04The first finals in 58 years to go to France was amazing.
00:15:07And our Welsh supporters, our fans, our comrades, as we kept going, we've been waiting a long
00:15:12time for this.
00:15:13I just keep looking at the table, it's always nice to see.
00:15:17You know, you never spell Wales with a Q.
00:15:19You do, but now you look at it, it's got a Q and Wales.
00:15:25We've had this target for such a long time, and for it to happen, it was more of a relief
00:15:29than anything.
00:15:30But no, some team had to do it, and I always believed that we had the talent in the squad
00:15:34to do it.
00:15:35There's quite a few in Wales that thought that they'd never see that day.
00:15:39The decision to expand the European Championship has already proven it's worth.
00:15:45Several nations will be making their first ever appearance at the Euro, and we are all
00:15:50firmly convinced that this will be a fantastic tournament for everyone involved.
00:15:55And the first team drawn in pot number one, Angleterre.
00:16:02L'Angleterre.
00:16:03England.
00:16:04England.
00:16:04England.
00:16:04And after pot one, as we said it, we have pot four.
00:16:09Four.
00:16:12Wales.
00:16:14Wales.
00:16:15Also for Wales, this is the first ever participation.
00:16:20They participated in 58 in the World Cup, and they will play England, as you have already
00:16:25seen.
00:16:26Next team.
00:16:28Group B.
00:16:29England and Wales.
00:16:31Slovakia.
00:16:33La Russia.
00:16:34La Russia.
00:16:45I remember watching the World Cup.
00:16:48My earliest recollection was 1978 in Argentina, you know.
00:16:54Also, I've always dreamed about being in our tournament, and missed out as a player.
00:16:57So then to get it as a manager, it was the most exhilarating feeling.
00:17:05It's difficult to explain to anybody that hasn't been what we've been through as a nation.
00:17:11You know, where it was something we've always wished for.
00:17:13And to get it, yeah, incredible.
00:17:26We deserve all this intrusion and all this pressure.
00:17:31We deserve it. We've been asking for it long enough.
00:17:34Now we can't say, oh, it's a little bit, you know, this is what we've been screaming for.
00:17:45Six months prior, you know, we had families and friends all the time.
00:17:48It's about their plans and the trips and the money that's being spent
00:17:51and the camper vans that are selling out and everything like that.
00:17:54So we started to get the feeling of how big a tournament it was.
00:17:57I'm off to France tomorrow, flying over to Bordeaux.
00:17:59I'm ridiculously excited.
00:18:01They heard my missus' words to me this morning.
00:18:03She said, you're ridiculously excited.
00:18:05The atmosphere in France, in Bordeaux, in Toulouse, wherever you went,
00:18:08there was somebody Welsh there.
00:18:10They embraced the tournament.
00:18:12I mean, I think the story of the tournament was of the Welsh supporters.
00:18:24I woke up to people drinking and singing and chanting,
00:18:28so you could look out your window,
00:18:29you could see them all in the pub across the road.
00:18:31It was an unbelievable atmosphere.
00:18:34Johnny Owen, who's been on his own tour de France following Wales.
00:18:38How many people do you think will go, whether they've got tickets or not?
00:18:42It's kind of a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
00:18:44Everybody that I know who's into football is going.
00:18:47Everybody.
00:18:48So what it's going to be like walking down Bordeaux High Street?
00:18:50Like Merthyr High Street, I think, you know, when I'm walking down there.
00:18:53So when we travel to the game,
00:18:55then you know, you know, you arrive in the city in Bordeaux
00:18:57and you're going to feel it.
00:19:00It probably hadn't sunk in prior to that, that we were actually going to be at a major tournament.
00:19:05There was like, you know, there was thousands of people all right round the bus,
00:19:09just screaming at us, you know, willing us to do well.
00:19:13There was just red jerseys, taffs everywhere.
00:19:17It was unbelievable.
00:19:25We've had good home crowds and we take the faithful away.
00:19:29But France was something different.
00:19:31We know it's a tough test against a very tough Slovakian team
00:19:35who will probably be favourites because, you know, they're a good team.
00:19:41They've been getting some great results.
00:19:43And if you look at the four teams in the group, then we are the underdogs.
00:19:46You still have to look around and enjoy the surroundings because it means something, you know.
00:19:52It means we have arrived at a tournament and we need to save a lot.
00:19:57That game was talked about for months.
00:19:59It was the first one.
00:20:00The name Slovakia was just constantly being thrown at you.
00:20:03You could sense that excitement, that anticipation.
00:20:06You know, we just stood in the corridor listening and it was, you know,
00:20:09sort of a surreal moment, unbelievable feeling.
00:20:12And I remember looking at the players because sometimes you can be affected by that.
00:20:16But there wasn't a sign.
00:20:17There wasn't a sign of that on our lads, you know.
00:20:20And I knew we wouldn't get beat and I knew we'd perform.
00:20:25Obviously, I've experienced big games before and big crowds outside.
00:20:28And it was just one of those feelings again, just a massive game.
00:20:30The atmosphere was right up.
00:20:32If you're playing for Real Madrid, then every week, you know, it's a circus, isn't it?
00:20:37You can't.
00:20:38Everywhere he walks, he's got one of these in his face and cameras everywhere.
00:20:42Some of our players, you know, play championship football.
00:20:45You know, one or two are a little bit lower than that they've been playing.
00:20:49So they won't be used to all of this.
00:20:50So it's nice to have somebody like that, that's at the other end,
00:20:53with all the attention and all the pressure.
00:20:59He was just a positive vibe to be around.
00:21:01He was showing his nerves at any stage.
00:21:05Big pressure on him as well.
00:21:06I think everybody just fed off the energy of the fans and was just really looking forward to the game.
00:21:12And, yeah, what happened after that was amazing.
00:21:14And that still gives me goosebumps thinking about it now.
00:21:16We turn up, we went out to Walmart and we could just see a massive sea of red.
00:21:25I think everybody who gets interviewed for this will tell you about Bordeaux's anthem.
00:21:29How emotional it was.
00:21:30I think that's when it hit home that, you know, exactly what it meant to the Welsh people.
00:21:41All right.
00:21:42Can I have a word?
00:21:44Tomorrow.
00:21:49Time.
00:21:51Time.
00:21:54There.
00:21:57Things.
00:21:58Things.
00:21:59They.
00:22:00Time.
00:22:01Things.
00:22:03Things.
00:22:05Things.
00:22:05Things.
00:22:05They.
00:22:05Things.
00:22:31CHOIR SINGS
00:22:52If you could press pause and stay in that moment, he'd be there forever.
00:23:35CHOIR SINGS
00:23:37Ben Davis kicked it off the line. You know, it could have been a lot different for us.
00:23:43And after that, we settled down really quickly into the game.
00:23:48You need the loving behind the football and the experience of it.
00:23:52You represent your country and you get it. You understand what it means.
00:23:56Or you don't. You know, there's no such thing as a life in between.
00:24:00Luckily, we've got one of the best players in the world. Totally gets it.
00:24:22That was a moment where I think we'd all been waiting for.
00:24:31The noise levels were just through the roof.
00:24:34And it was like, oh, we're here.
00:24:36You know, this is what it's all about. This is what we've always wanted.
00:24:40It really felt like the tournament had started for us.
00:24:54They were firmly on top of us. We can't get out of our own half.
00:24:58We're too big. We're hanging on to a 1-1 here.
00:25:00They get the equaliser and then you're thinking, no, come on, can we just hold on?
00:25:06You know, you get to the 70-minute mark and, you know, the lads are getting tired.
00:25:09Obviously, tough games, playing against world-class players.
00:25:11You hear the anthem that's come from the fans and it does give you that action, 10%.
00:25:15I've been fortunate to play football for a long time now.
00:25:17I've never seen a connection between the team and a set of fans like that first game.
00:25:22We need to get up the pitch. We need to get behind the Slovakian defence.
00:25:26We brought Hal on and we brought Joel Ledley on.
00:25:29And as it worked, it was a move straight off the training ground.
00:25:33In that system, we tried to go from side to side as much as we can to move the opposition
00:25:36round.
00:25:38Threaded pass from Joel Ledley, Grip, or to the perfect player you want in that situation,
00:25:42which doesn't think twice.
00:25:59The way that just slid into the corner flag and, yeah, it was just, it was just an overwhelming experience.
00:26:08All the atmosphere there on the pitch with the players, with the supporters, again, it's gone up another level.
00:26:17You could just sense the relief, the excitement, that feeling of,
00:26:21that we're going to win our first game in the European Championships.
00:26:34To score early on in the game and go on and win it in a very difficult game, emotions are
00:26:39high, you know,
00:26:40showed that this group was a very special group, that, you know, getting there wasn't going to be enough.
00:26:52We talked about the fact, and we kept saying it, and we believed it.
00:26:55We weren't saying it for a cliche to, you know, get the focus off the England game.
00:26:58The first game is the biggest game in the tournament.
00:27:00If you can win that, especially in a group stage,
00:27:02you set yourself up perfectly to take the pressure off the rest of the games.
00:27:07Have things changed?
00:27:08The fact that you are top of the group, you have three points, England have one point.
00:27:13Has that changed any of your preparations, any of your thinking of the game?
00:27:17No.
00:27:19Group B, England's first opponents have just been drawn, and it is Wales.
00:27:24Oh, what a draw that is.
00:27:26England against Wales.
00:27:28Come on.
00:27:29I'm born and bred Swansea.
00:27:32You know, very passionate Welshman.
00:27:34So I've got a chip on my shoulder.
00:27:36As soon as we mention England, the sport, I want to beat England.
00:27:41The build-up to the group stage was all about England.
00:27:44That's all people talked about was England game, the England game,
00:27:46and what's going to happen, and who's going to win,
00:27:49and that's going to be the game of the group.
00:27:50I was worried about the spotlight, the scrutiny,
00:27:53just the bigger picture, just everything that would go along with the tournament, you know,
00:27:56and if we'd be able to cope, because it was something new to us.
00:27:59It was a circus, that game, it really was.
00:28:01It was everything that had come around it for just 90 minutes of football.
00:28:04Things are going to be said, this thing was going to be a little bit of tuna throwing.
00:28:10And actually, you know, who says what, why?
00:28:13Once the whistle's gone, that's where all the questions will be asked,
00:28:17and you've got to make sure you've got the answers.
00:28:19It was all about getting enough points to get through.
00:28:21That's all that mattered.
00:28:24England was the second game of three,
00:28:26and that's how we tried to approach it, you know.
00:28:28I think our boys enjoyed the fact that the English media printed everything we said,
00:28:33you know, and then complained back to us.
00:28:40England bigged themselves up, passion, pride, patriotism.
00:28:43Did you say all that, and did you quite mean it?
00:28:45And are you quite surprised how the way that maybe some of the England camp have bitten?
00:28:51I saw the interview with Baylor, he was giggling, you know.
00:28:55The media are going to try and put words in his mouth at times.
00:28:58How would England players get into this current Welsh team?
00:29:00No.
00:29:02It's a massive statement.
00:29:04You know, we are a small country.
00:29:05We haven't got a lot of players to pick from,
00:29:07and it's a bit like us against the world, you know,
00:29:09sort of like siege mentality, and that's what we have.
00:29:12We knew that the press were going to ask these sort of questions,
00:29:15so we were just like, let's play up a bit for them,
00:29:18and let's just, you know, tell them how it is.
00:29:21I never said they didn't have passion or pride.
00:29:23I just feel my opinion that we have more.
00:29:27I couldn't care less, to be honest with you.
00:29:28Who are, who takes their corners, or whatever.
00:29:32You know, we were just, all we were saying,
00:29:34we want to play for Wales.
00:29:35We were proud of being Welsh.
00:29:38It's not like we don't respect England, they're a great team.
00:29:41People seem to see the love or hate, the way we were going about it,
00:29:45but it was working for us.
00:29:47There was always going to be something on it,
00:29:49because it was the middle game of the group.
00:29:51We know how hard it is for Wales.
00:29:53For England, the pressure on you at the tournament,
00:29:56we could feel it on you, you know,
00:29:58we could feel it, it was incredible.
00:30:11You know, I was really looking forward to it.
00:30:12I thought, you know, this was going to be the time
00:30:14where, you know, we can get one over them.
00:30:41I remember coming in at half-time,
00:30:42and we were a goal up against England, the Euros,
00:30:45and still you could sense that we weren't quite happy
00:30:47with the way we were performing,
00:30:48and we knew if maybe things didn't improve
00:30:51and we didn't start playing a bit better,
00:30:52then it would come back to bite us.
00:30:55Our goal in the first half probably didn't help us.
00:30:58I think that's when we had something to hang on to,
00:31:01and the team just wanted to try and protect that.
00:31:08We didn't play how we should have,
00:31:09and maybe the occasion got to us a little bit.
00:31:35We sat there with 30 seconds to go on four points,
00:31:39which probably didn't have to take this week,
00:31:41and then within a space of seconds,
00:31:46we'd miss that opportunity.
00:32:01To concede later on was hard to take.
00:32:03And I was disappointed that we hadn't showed England
00:32:06how good we are.
00:32:08We didn't put it all on the line.
00:32:15I always look at myself first.
00:32:17I think maybe I should have worked differently through the week.
00:32:19Maybe my messages to the players
00:32:20was too much fighting and not enough expression.
00:32:24It was horrible feelings.
00:32:25It was one of the worst I've had in football.
00:32:27It was just, I don't think it was a fact
00:32:28that we lost last minute.
00:32:29I think it was, we just didn't give the account
00:32:32of ourselves we should have.
00:32:35Just before they scored,
00:32:38I checked the screen to see the time,
00:32:40and I think it was two minutes to go.
00:32:42See, 1-1 at the time.
00:32:43There was a guy in the Welsh end crying.
00:32:47I just thought, if I wasn't a player,
00:32:49I'd probably be in that end with the fans anyway,
00:32:52and maybe something just come over me to think,
00:32:55and almost to give a message of saying,
00:32:57you know, come on, keep your chins up,
00:32:59because, you know, it isn't over.
00:33:01As much as this hurts now,
00:33:02we've still got another game in a few days.
00:33:04We need you.
00:33:08As long as that England game was done,
00:33:10the whistle had gone, we'd lost.
00:33:12It didn't matter. It was finished.
00:33:13All gone. All that matters was Russia.
00:33:15We got away from the hotel.
00:33:16We didn't go anywhere near the training pitch.
00:33:19We had to walk on the beach.
00:33:20We had to bite to eat, and it was a good vibe.
00:33:22Can I just ask, how long did you talk about
00:33:24the England game, or maybe to put it another way,
00:33:27how long were you allowed to talk about the England game?
00:33:30What England game?
00:33:30I think it spoke volumes about the players
00:33:32that they were able to deal with that situation,
00:33:36and then box it off, put that in isolation,
00:33:39and they say, right, no, we've got Russia now.
00:33:54It just showed the other side of the team.
00:33:56We'd dealt with adversity far greater than that prior,
00:33:59so we knew the strength of the group.
00:34:01It's always going to be sad that every team gets on grid,
00:34:04but there's something special we go year away.
00:34:06Yeah, and we've got boys from different backgrounds,
00:34:09everything, but everyone seems to just click.
00:34:16A lot of us, I suppose, have grown up together as well,
00:34:18coming through a similar sort of age group.
00:34:20This is what we always wanted to do as kids.
00:34:23Now to be playing on the highest level with each other,
00:34:27having a laugh, enjoying it, is what we all want to be doing.
00:34:33This generation of ours, the Ramseys, the Bales,
00:34:36they're all in the same sort of age group,
00:34:38and they would have started through the mini-football,
00:34:40junior players, sort of primary school children,
00:34:43getting away from the 11 players in a giant field,
00:34:45in a very heavy ball, and trying to kick the ball,
00:34:48it's hard to come in one direction instead of passing it.
00:34:51I just think that has given us a bedding
00:34:54where we can have a play in the school, play football,
00:34:55because we like to pass the ball.
00:35:00The younger players in the UK
00:35:03don't get as much exposure to the ball
00:35:06as maybe the players in Spain.
00:35:08A lot of that has to do with weather and facilities.
00:35:10It's not because we don't want to coach them,
00:35:12we don't want to work with them.
00:35:13We can't.
00:35:14They've got nowhere to play.
00:35:15They haven't got the surface.
00:35:18You make the younger players better
00:35:20by the younger players having better facilities,
00:35:23and coaches who want to progress as coaches.
00:35:27The earlier you get them
00:35:28and the better you work with them,
00:35:30the better chance that you've got.
00:35:31The key is to be able to see the roots of the first team.
00:35:34At some football clubs and in some nations,
00:35:36you probably can't see that,
00:35:37or you're many, many years away,
00:35:39but I think at Wales you can see, you know,
00:35:40if you've done well for the 21s or the 19s,
00:35:43or even no victory shield level,
00:35:45there was a fast track there available
00:35:46where Wales weren't afraid to throw you in at the deep end,
00:35:49no matter how young you were.
00:35:50You know, we've seen that with Gareth.
00:35:52It's starting to show now that
00:35:54what we started to do maybe 10 years ago
00:35:57is coming to fruition,
00:35:58and we're seeing the results.
00:36:01Obviously it started under Gary Speed,
00:36:02going back to basics
00:36:03and making it more professional
00:36:04around the place with Wales,
00:36:05and then obviously this gaffer come in
00:36:07and done incredible things,
00:36:08and I think we started to feel like
00:36:10there was a turn in the fortunes
00:36:12and a turn in team spirit as well.
00:36:13It's gone full circle
00:36:15where players want to come to the Welsh camps
00:36:17even if they're injured,
00:36:19and that's where we are now,
00:36:19and Chris has taken on that again
00:36:21and has made it one of the best
00:36:25international setups there is, really.
00:36:28There's a logo, Together Stronger.
00:36:30It comes from the players
00:36:32and us as a staff
00:36:33being in some real tough situations
00:36:36where we have been in,
00:36:38and sticking together and coming through it.
00:36:40It's not about going out for a few beers
00:36:42and having a laugh and a jog.
00:36:43It's easy, that is,
00:36:44but that lasts for five minutes.
00:36:46It's all the other stuff
00:36:47when you've been in real tough situations
00:36:50and people don't turn their back
00:36:51on that situation,
00:36:52don't turn their back on you.
00:36:54We always speak about Ash and Rambo
00:36:56and Baleau and Joe Allen.
00:36:58There's other players
00:37:00who are so important,
00:37:01you know, Joe Ledley,
00:37:02Andy Kings,
00:37:03Sam Vokes,
00:37:04Simon Church.
00:37:05Chris Gunter's got 70-odd caps.
00:37:07Unbelievable.
00:37:09You want, mate?
00:37:13This is what it's like
00:37:14to play with a 90 million pound player.
00:37:18I could go through them all.
00:37:20They're always there.
00:37:21They don't miss games.
00:37:22Sometimes they don't always play,
00:37:24but they always play a huge part.
00:37:26And they're massive.
00:37:27But they run the dressing room.
00:37:29I don't run the dressing room.
00:37:30It's their dressing room.
00:37:31The guys who haven't been on the grass
00:37:32or haven't been starting,
00:37:34you know,
00:37:34they're chomping at the bit
00:37:36and they're not very happy
00:37:37that they haven't been on the grass
00:37:38and I like that.
00:37:39The first instinct is disappointment
00:37:41that you're not playing,
00:37:42but then there's no point dwelling on that
00:37:44because you can't change
00:37:45the manager's decision.
00:37:45You've got to be there
00:37:46and you've got to try and help the boys
00:37:48and make the boys relax,
00:37:49you know,
00:37:50for such big games.
00:37:51The days building up
00:37:52to the Russia game
00:37:53was very, very positive
00:37:55when I think a lot of people
00:37:55were expected to be negative.
00:37:57It was a good time to just,
00:37:59I suppose,
00:38:00try and get over the England defeat
00:38:01as quick as possible
00:38:02because I didn't feel
00:38:03we played that bad.
00:38:04It was just,
00:38:04especially to lose in the last minute,
00:38:06it really does take the wind out of you.
00:38:08But I think just to make sure
00:38:09everybody was on the same page
00:38:10was still ready to go.
00:38:11We've got everything to play for
00:38:12and yeah,
00:38:13I think it definitely helped.
00:38:15It's freezing.
00:38:16My hands are freezing.
00:38:18No, no, no.
00:38:19It's not too much.
00:38:20It's just 80.
00:38:2180.
00:38:22This is the time of your life.
00:38:25You don't know it,
00:38:26but it is.
00:38:27Go and express yourself.
00:38:29Go and enjoy it.
00:38:29You know your job.
00:38:31You know what it is.
00:38:32You're a good player,
00:38:33otherwise you wouldn't be here.
00:38:34That was a real turning point for us
00:38:36where we said,
00:38:37OK, so what?
00:38:38We just lost to England.
00:38:39It was a massive game,
00:38:40but we're still in a position
00:38:41where we know if we win,
00:38:42we go through.
00:38:42So we would have taken that before.
00:38:44So it's not,
00:38:45you know,
00:38:45it's not all doom and gloom.
00:38:46The credit's got to go
00:38:47to the manager for that,
00:38:48the psychologist
00:38:49and all the stuff
00:38:49we've got around
00:38:51because to pick us up
00:38:51after that England game
00:38:52because it's an honest group,
00:38:53this group of players
00:38:54and when we lose
00:38:55and don't play well,
00:38:56you know,
00:38:56the boys really feel it.
00:38:57When they're in camp,
00:38:58it's tough.
00:38:59The camps are hard,
00:39:00very serious,
00:39:01but at the same time
00:39:02they enjoy it
00:39:02because they've got that
00:39:04respect for each other
00:39:05and they've got that bond
00:39:06with each other.
00:39:07I think you did that all day.
00:39:08Oh, yeah.
00:39:08I wouldn't go very far.
00:39:10Just like this,
00:39:11all the way.
00:39:11Another wing.
00:39:13Bomba.
00:39:13Bomba.
00:39:14Bamboozle the air defence.
00:39:16Bamboozle.
00:39:16Good with bamboozle.
00:39:18We tend to forget
00:39:19these players are human beings
00:39:20and they've got to enjoy
00:39:22this experience as well.
00:39:23They don't enjoy playing football
00:39:24for their country.
00:39:25Sometimes you put
00:39:26too much pressure on them.
00:39:34We did a video,
00:39:35we did a song for the tournament
00:39:36with the boys
00:39:37and we did a video
00:39:37with the team
00:39:38about two months ago
00:39:39and you could tell then,
00:39:40you know,
00:39:41I was chatting to Joe Allen
00:39:42saying how great,
00:39:43I thought it was new
00:39:44he was and stuff
00:39:45and we were joking
00:39:45and laughing
00:39:47and you could just tell
00:39:48there was such a bond there
00:39:49straight away,
00:39:50you know,
00:39:51and by the end of the video
00:39:52they were jumping up
00:39:52and down with it.
00:39:53I was watching the Rocky,
00:39:54was it Rocky 4
00:39:55with the Russian in the day
00:39:56and that set it up nicely.
00:39:58I think a few boys
00:39:58might have watched that.
00:40:00Strange really
00:40:01because going into it
00:40:01a lot of us felt
00:40:02that it could possibly
00:40:04be the last game
00:40:04of the tournament
00:40:05if it didn't go our way
00:40:05so I think
00:40:06that spurred everyone on.
00:40:08Can't decide the result almost.
00:40:10The result will be
00:40:11whatever it is.
00:40:12You decide how you want
00:40:14the performance to go.
00:40:15within our dressing room
00:40:16we knew that
00:40:17we can beat this team.
00:40:18If we're going to go out
00:40:19in the tournament
00:40:19we'll go out on our terms
00:40:20playing our way.
00:40:21We knew exactly
00:40:22what we wanted to do.
00:40:23Have a go.
00:40:39Do you know why
00:40:43You've got feelings in your heart
00:40:48and the first whistle
00:40:51just all clicked into place.
00:40:54Not often
00:40:55as a coach
00:40:56do you sit on the sideline
00:40:57and watch the team play
00:40:59and really enjoy it.
00:41:01Our performance
00:41:02I think is
00:41:02from the best in a Welsh
00:41:04to talk is easy
00:41:06but to show what we can do
00:41:07is the hard bit.
00:41:10I was looking at the boys
00:41:11in front thinking
00:41:11this is a good team
00:41:12these are good players
00:41:13especially the way
00:41:14the forward players
00:41:15attack the game.
00:41:17We were going for those
00:41:19passes that sometimes
00:41:20don't come off.
00:41:21If you don't try them
00:41:22you're never going to know.
00:41:24Joe Allen has it back
00:41:25plays it through for Aaron Ramsey
00:41:26who's onside
00:41:28Ramsey!
00:41:30Wales 1-1
00:41:32Ramsey!
00:41:34Gareth Bale's got a bit of space
00:41:35the players to his left
00:41:36if he wants to try and use
00:41:37Neil Taylor
00:41:38oh Taylor's in
00:41:39a chance for two for Wales
00:41:40well it's saved by the keeper
00:41:42Taylor at the second in 10
00:41:43makes it two!
00:41:51Chris Gunters on my side
00:41:52on the dugout side
00:41:54he's playing brilliantly
00:41:55no one of them
00:41:56he turned around
00:41:56and said to me
00:41:57enjoy this gaffer
00:41:58because this doesn't
00:41:59happen often
00:41:59and I thought
00:42:00you know
00:42:01this particular game
00:42:03there's everything on it.
00:42:05And Ramsey leaves it
00:42:06for Chris Gunters
00:42:07who can scamper
00:42:08towards the
00:42:08rushing penalty area
00:42:09gives it to Ramsey
00:42:10who's towards the edge
00:42:11of the D
00:42:12he's got options
00:42:12inside the area
00:42:13Bale is one of them!
00:42:14And no one else
00:42:17can harm me
00:42:18the way that you
00:42:20can harm me
00:42:21I need to know
00:42:24Bale!
00:42:25And that's the Bale!
00:42:27at one last
00:42:30Gareth Bale gets a goal
00:42:32on the night
00:42:32three in three
00:42:34group stage games
00:42:35round of 16
00:42:37here they come
00:42:39Wales 3
00:42:40Russia 0
00:42:41and almost inevitably
00:42:43it's that man again
00:42:44Gareth Bale!
00:42:52I wanted to make sure
00:42:54everybody realised
00:42:55who Wales were
00:42:56and what we're capable of
00:42:58We can only imagine
00:42:59what it was like
00:42:59back in Wales
00:43:00I'd love to have been there
00:43:01myself
00:43:02the celebrations
00:43:03after that game
00:43:03were great
00:43:04because to finish top
00:43:05and to be able
00:43:06to call ourselves
00:43:06the best team
00:43:07in that group
00:43:07was unbelievable
00:43:08and it was
00:43:09you know
00:43:09it was a dream
00:43:10it was a massive dream
00:43:10for us
00:43:11I felt like a lot of times
00:43:12that every person
00:43:13in Wales was there
00:43:14it didn't seem real
00:43:15that there were
00:43:15so many people out there
00:43:18but we were really proud
00:43:19of our fans
00:43:20not just in the stadiums
00:43:21outside the stadiums
00:43:22everybody seemed to
00:43:23seemed to love
00:43:24the Welsh fans there
00:43:25and we left a good impression
00:43:26on France I think
00:43:27everywhere we went
00:43:28we've seen them
00:43:28in their numbers
00:43:29we heard them
00:43:30Don't take me home
00:43:31and everywhere you went
00:43:32the players singing in the hotel
00:43:33it was just very infractious
00:43:35because people were there
00:43:36to enjoy themselves
00:43:37you see support like that
00:43:39and it does give you
00:43:41extra motivation
00:43:42I mean it's back in Merth
00:43:43I mean drinking red wine
00:43:44for the rest of their lives
00:43:46they thought it was
00:43:47vinegar until then
00:43:49we're in France
00:43:50we're enjoying it
00:43:50what's next
00:43:51I'm going to Toulouse now
00:43:52I'm going to get there
00:43:53I don't know
00:43:53I'll get there
00:44:01the likes of Germany
00:44:03England
00:44:03Spain
00:44:04all these kind of big nations
00:44:06are in the other half
00:44:07of the draw
00:44:08so you must see this
00:44:09as a great opportunity
00:44:11potentially to go
00:44:12much further in the tournament
00:44:13it doesn't matter
00:44:14who comes out of the hat
00:44:14it's going to be a tough game
00:44:16I think because of
00:44:17what's at stake
00:44:19just running
00:44:20a lot of the time
00:44:22on pure emotion
00:44:43it was a hot day in Paris
00:44:47it was a tough game
00:44:49two very organised teams
00:44:52it felt at times
00:44:53a little bit from the fans
00:44:54that it was the first game
00:44:55we're happy to be there
00:44:57loving the experience
00:44:58but we're favourites
00:45:01we need to get through
00:45:02again there's that expectancy
00:45:04where we'd come through
00:45:04the first three games
00:45:05where people didn't expect us
00:45:07to perform
00:45:08or you know
00:45:09I think one or two people
00:45:11said we would do well
00:45:11to score a goal
00:45:13so we came through that
00:45:15and the weather team
00:45:16they're expected to go through here
00:45:19you could almost feel the pressure
00:45:20in the stadium
00:45:21from both sides
00:45:22because it was somewhere
00:45:23we'd never been
00:45:23and off the back of the Russia game
00:45:25everyone expected us to have
00:45:25another game like that
00:45:27football's not like that
00:45:27it's never like that
00:45:30probably our hardest game
00:45:31and I
00:45:34some people may find that
00:45:36strange for me to say that
00:45:39I could feel the nerves
00:45:42and the edginess on everybody
00:45:44on our supporters as well
00:45:45even the red wall
00:45:46I think felt it on the day
00:45:50they've been on a
00:45:51a great unbeaten run
00:45:52going into the tournament
00:45:54we played them not long ago
00:45:55before that
00:45:56and I think we drew 1-1
00:45:58so we knew it was going to be a battle
00:46:00they don't give away as he goes
00:46:02they're prepared to sit in
00:46:03and grind you down
00:46:05they've certainly done
00:46:06their homework on us
00:46:07as we had on them
00:46:09yeah there's no complacency
00:46:11on our part
00:46:11we knew we'd have to be right on it
00:46:13and that the chances
00:46:14would be few and far between
00:46:19they'll defend on a low block
00:46:20where there won't be a lot of space
00:46:22the space will be in front of them
00:46:23and they'll allow us to have the ball
00:46:31I've been in that position before
00:46:32you just have to keep going
00:46:33be patient
00:46:34move the ball as quick as you can
00:46:37it was a different game
00:46:38it wasn't a team trying to score against us
00:46:40it was a team trying to stop us from scoring
00:46:42so we struggled for periods of it
00:46:48it wasn't an easy game playing at all
00:46:50we didn't want to overcommit going forward
00:46:52and get caught on the counter
00:46:53because that's their game
00:46:56they were sold at the back
00:46:57and they were tough
00:47:04they were more comfortable than we were in the game
00:47:07their game plan was working
00:47:08so we said half time
00:47:09calm down
00:47:10they do this to every team
00:47:11it'll be one by one goal
00:47:13maybe a little bit of luck
00:47:14with us or them
00:47:15make sure it's with us
00:47:17stay in the game
00:47:25it looked like going to actual time
00:47:27possibly leaving penalties
00:47:30we knew with Gareth and Aaron and Hal up top
00:47:33we would get a chance
00:47:36Rambo got it
00:47:37he played a little one to us
00:47:38Hal
00:47:39then he slid Bale in
00:47:40the whole stadium I wrapped it
00:47:55you could feel relief
00:47:59helps when you've got some players
00:48:01who can produce some magic
00:48:02and obviously Gaz did
00:48:03yeah and the way the goal came
00:48:05I think summed up
00:48:06the type of game it was
00:48:07and the type of performance
00:48:09that was needed from us
00:48:11there wasn't much between the teams
00:48:13we were asked a different question in that game
00:48:19I was in Paris in the stadium
00:48:20I've always wanted to play
00:48:25I actually remember trying to get out of the way
00:48:27I ended up hitting in full pelt
00:48:29and a big car crashed for my fist
00:48:31my shoulder was injured
00:48:33we had about eight minutes left
00:48:34I wanted to see the job out
00:48:36I felt like I could do it
00:48:38but yeah I was in a lot of pain
00:48:40he's the rock
00:48:41he's the captain
00:48:42he's the one everyone looks to
00:48:43when you need a voice
00:48:45and he leads by example on the pitch
00:48:46he puts his body on the line
00:48:47as you see
00:48:48and you won't want to come off for any game
00:48:52you know looking back
00:48:53maybe that was the wrong decision
00:48:55it's hard in the game sometimes
00:48:57you know you're so caught up in it
00:48:58that you are thinking straight
00:49:04the Northern All-Island fans were screaming
00:49:07I think they felt
00:49:08they sensed that
00:49:09they got a chance here
00:49:15in all the games we played
00:49:16that game lasted the longest
00:49:30that one goal decided the game
00:49:32but for us it was massive
00:49:34obviously then going into a quarterfinal
00:49:38for us we got through it
00:49:39because we had a play on the pitch
00:49:40yeah it could make the difference
00:49:42when we came through it
00:49:43and we won the game
00:49:44it was fantastic
00:49:47to share it with all the families
00:49:48and the kids
00:49:49coming on the pitch after
00:49:50was amazing
00:49:51and definitely worth a find
00:49:53from the FAW
00:49:58we have took
00:49:58too many hours off work
00:50:00we've spent too much money
00:50:01but do we care
00:50:02no
00:50:03because we're in the quarterfinals
00:50:04hey
00:50:06Joe Allen
00:50:06I read it on Facebook
00:50:08right
00:50:09two thirds of the World Service
00:50:11is covered in water
00:50:12the rest is covered by Joe Allen
00:50:15almost right
00:50:34how do you keep fresh
00:50:35it's a long old tournament
00:50:37yeah it's great that you're here
00:50:38but even for players
00:50:39it can get boring
00:50:40mentally you can start
00:50:42to get a bit stale
00:50:43how do you ward against that
00:50:45it was important for us
00:50:46to get the environment right
00:50:48from the start
00:50:48because
00:50:50none of us had any
00:50:51sort of
00:50:53expectations
00:50:53or knowledge
00:50:54of what
00:50:55atonement was going to be like
00:50:56when we actually got there
00:50:58three Ben Davises
00:51:00and one Josh
00:51:01William
00:51:02we were a family
00:51:03we were a family
00:51:04it was like living together
00:51:05well we were living together
00:51:06for six weeks
00:51:07ready
00:51:10get in
00:51:12get in
00:51:13what are you doing
00:51:18I can see a reflection
00:51:19behind me
00:51:20the lads will get on so well
00:51:22it wasn't a chore
00:51:23to sort of be away
00:51:24with each other for that long
00:51:24we loved every minute of it
00:51:26like being with your mates
00:51:27all the time
00:51:27being on holiday
00:51:28and just enjoying the occasion
00:51:30we're doing quizzes
00:51:31all the time
00:51:32we're playing table tennis
00:51:33we're watching games
00:51:34where we do everything together
00:51:36we have a round of golf
00:51:39I'm getting cramp in my forearm
00:51:41the hotel was the relaxation area
00:51:43we had to eat
00:51:44sleep
00:51:45play table tennis
00:51:46darts
00:51:48the younger lads
00:51:49played on the
00:51:50playstations or xbox
00:51:51or whatever they was playing
00:51:52the fact that we all enjoy
00:51:54spending so much time
00:51:55with each other
00:51:55it really does help
00:51:56in the downtime
00:51:57when maybe other teams
00:51:58would be bored
00:51:59I think the standard
00:52:00of table tennis
00:52:00improved dramatically
00:52:01from the start
00:52:02to the end of the tournament
00:52:05the rest of the staff
00:52:06are a bit scared
00:52:07to take a point
00:52:07off the gaffer
00:52:10the gaffer thinks
00:52:11he's a good player
00:52:12he's horrendous
00:52:18they used to be on it
00:52:19all the time
00:52:19couldn't even get a go
00:52:20could we
00:52:21trying to keep
00:52:2223 players
00:52:25happy and involved
00:52:26for four to five weeks
00:52:28was always going to be
00:52:28a challenge
00:52:30Wales aren't the sole
00:52:32home nation left
00:52:33at Euro 2016
00:52:34you dispatched
00:52:35Northern Ireland
00:52:36England
00:52:37well they did their own
00:52:39thing against Iceland
00:52:40surprised
00:52:41happy
00:52:41all of the above
00:52:42ready
00:52:43go throw
00:52:44ready
00:52:45ready
00:52:46oh yeah
00:52:47oh yeah
00:52:48oh yeah
00:52:50oh yeah
00:52:50oh yeah
00:52:50oh yeah
00:52:52oh yeah
00:52:57oh yeah
00:52:57oh yeah
00:52:59oh yeah
00:53:01oh yeah
00:53:02oh yeah
00:53:02oh yeah
00:53:02oh yeah
00:53:03it's got out
00:53:03someone's leaked it
00:53:04or sent it to someone
00:53:05and you know
00:53:07before I know
00:53:07it's all over Twitter
00:53:08and I'm starting to panic
00:53:10because I can't quite believe that
00:53:11Bruce!
00:53:12Bruce!
00:53:13Bruce!
00:53:14They come out
00:53:15and that was that
00:53:16you know
00:53:18nothing we could do
00:53:19about it
00:53:19you know
00:53:20just
00:53:20I think they're just confident
00:53:22young lads playing football
00:53:24enjoying themselves
00:53:24being away together
00:53:25you know
00:53:26and there's no disrespect to anybody
00:53:28it was just the fact
00:53:28the event
00:53:29the time
00:53:30when it happened
00:53:31who it was
00:53:49you know
00:53:50you can't really describe
00:53:51to be in that environment
00:53:53again
00:53:53like you say
00:53:53after such a long time
00:53:54playing for Wales
00:53:55to be part of it
00:53:56was something
00:53:57I'll never forget
00:53:58Chris Gunter's gonna
00:53:59potentially miss
00:54:00his brother's wedding
00:54:01Neil Taylor
00:54:02is missing Beyonce
00:54:03tomorrow night
00:54:04which he's very annoyed about
00:54:05what are you missing out on
00:54:07or what do you hope
00:54:07you could miss out on
00:54:10I planned everything
00:54:11for after the final
00:54:12so
00:54:14I was
00:54:14I was the clever one
00:54:15in the group I think
00:54:17I am experiencing
00:54:18feelings that I didn't know
00:54:19I was potential
00:54:20or I had potential
00:54:21to feel
00:54:22it's sensational
00:54:23I mean
00:54:23none of us can quite believe it really
00:54:25in terms of experiences
00:54:26that you've had in your life
00:54:27where does this rank already
00:54:29it's
00:54:29it's on a par
00:54:30with my daughter's birth
00:54:31I'd say
00:54:32um
00:54:33so
00:54:34better than any wedding
00:54:35that I've
00:54:35that I've
00:54:36that I've
00:54:36been to and said
00:54:37yes
00:54:37uh
00:54:38this is
00:54:41so
00:54:44just being caught
00:54:46in absolute
00:54:46downpour
00:54:49there's John Murray
00:54:50John
00:54:51John Murray
00:54:53voice of Five Live
00:54:55predictions for tonight
00:54:56please John
00:54:57predictions for tonight
00:55:00I'm going to go
00:55:02four
00:55:02be honest John
00:55:03yeah I'm going to be honest
00:55:04I'm going to go for
00:55:052-1 to Belgium
00:55:09as I've said
00:55:10John used to be the voice of Five Live
00:55:12there's far better people on it than him
00:55:27I think the Belgian public thought when they saw they were going to play Wales
00:55:30they were probably rubbing their hands and thought yeah
00:55:32because the Belgian were a fantastic team
00:55:34I think they're ranked second in the world
00:55:36I think if you were asked the Belgian players themselves
00:55:38they may have given you a different insight into what they were thinking
00:55:41because we've had some good games with them
00:55:43and we've matched them
00:56:08it felt like an away game I suppose
00:56:10although we took loads of fans over there
00:56:11the size of the stadium
00:56:12the amount that Belgium bought it felt like an away game
00:56:14I mean it was a nice British night
00:56:16it was raining
00:56:16it was a bit cooler
00:56:20you know Belgium started strongly
00:56:21but they're a quality side full of great individuals
00:56:28you know they had a couple of chances
00:56:30a few blocks on the line
00:56:34three or four men chucking themselves
00:56:35in front of the ball
00:56:36and you know we were just clinging on
00:56:43sometimes you play against good teams
00:56:45who are good with the ball
00:56:45and you have the tendency to sit back
00:56:48and watch them
00:56:48and say yeah they are good with the ball
00:56:50rather than stepping in and affecting it
00:56:53and upsetting them
00:57:10you know in a game of that magnitude
00:57:12the first goal is key
00:57:13I think most people thought it's the end of that
00:57:15because we're going to have to attack
00:57:17they'll exploit the space we leave
00:57:22well it just shows that
00:57:23that's not always the case
00:57:26we bossed the game
00:57:28from that point on
00:57:29to the end of the first 45 minutes
00:57:31we bossed that game
00:57:41and the gaps in the game
00:57:42I was just looking around
00:57:43thinking we're having a really good game
00:57:45and we're giving these
00:57:46the favourites of the tournament
00:57:47a run for their money
00:57:49between the goal and half time
00:57:51they just didn't know what to do
00:57:52they couldn't live with us
00:57:54we had them under pressure at the time
00:57:55and I thought there's a chance
00:57:56we're going to get a goal here
00:57:57I'd seen Neil Taylor score
00:57:59in the Euros
00:57:59he never scored
00:58:00so I was thinking
00:58:01I'd love to get a goal
00:58:07see Ash run away
00:58:08his head really like that
00:58:09his class for him
00:58:10it's
00:58:11couldn't happen to a better
00:58:12broken out team
00:58:15yeah
00:58:15the quickest I've seen
00:58:16in front
00:58:17his celebration
00:58:18that was unreal
00:58:19typical sort of captain performance
00:58:21he comes up when we needed him
00:58:22he pulled us out
00:58:23from underneath Belgium
00:58:24and got us on the way
00:58:25half time we get in
00:58:28total confidence
00:58:29that we were going to go on
00:58:30and score again
00:58:31and I think they do that as well
00:58:34you know they're going to get chances
00:58:36but we were making chances
00:58:37I just remember being put in by
00:58:39and I just made my way into the box
00:58:47I was standing and looking at him
00:58:48and I could see his options
00:58:51we were all shouting for him just to pass their tails
00:58:52and he was in acres of streets
00:58:53but I just thought hold on a minute
00:58:56I can generate a bit of space
00:58:58and he did something I never thought he was going to do
00:59:08definitely the best goal of my life
00:59:10definitely the best goal of my life
00:59:14what a feeling in that corner was
00:59:15it was amazing for Harlan for the team
00:59:17he sensed it was on to do it
00:59:19he took the gamble
00:59:20paid off
00:59:21the noise the eruption
00:59:22that happened at the time
00:59:24like I said
00:59:25there was only a quarter
00:59:26probably of Welsh fans in the stadium
00:59:28but it went crazy
00:59:28I'd like to sit here and say
00:59:30you know
00:59:30I drilled him on it
00:59:31two or three days running
00:59:34but I can't
00:59:39we're probably 25 minutes away from
00:59:42going to a semi-final
00:59:43and they had one or two moments
00:59:51we had a drinks break
00:59:52and I was having a drink
00:59:52and Sean tried to throw a gel on to Rambo
00:59:55lobbed it on
00:59:56and Tails looked the other way
00:59:57and is sitting clean on the side of the head
00:59:59the bench said afterwards
01:00:00it sort of broke the pressure a little bit
01:00:02that we had a chance to laugh at something
01:00:03because we were obviously really nervous
01:00:05at 2-1
01:00:05we were sort of pen backer
01:00:07for the last sort of 10 minutes or so
01:00:08and I think it came from a free kick
01:00:12Chris Gallop off
01:00:13down to the right
01:00:15I think it was only five minutes ago
01:00:17and I'm thinking the don't across it
01:00:23it wasn't as if we were in the last minute or so
01:00:26so you've seen Sam
01:00:29it was perfect for me to go and attack
01:00:30when it's left his head
01:00:33I'm thinking this is going in
01:00:43what a header by the way
01:00:48the thing that lived most for me is
01:00:51the fact that it was in that corner
01:00:53it was like a wave that came rushing down
01:00:55and they were just going
01:00:57completely crazy
01:00:59knowing that
01:01:00we've got two goals on them here
01:01:02and there's only a couple of minutes to go
01:01:03we're probably going to win the game
01:01:04not the best feeling I've had
01:01:06on a football pitch
01:01:08you'd give anything to try and relive
01:01:11it was all a dream honestly
01:01:13it was all a dream for us
01:01:13for it to have gone like that
01:01:14you know I've played for Wales
01:01:16for eight and a half years now
01:01:17and I've never seen a Welsh team play so well
01:01:19I think I sort of collapsed on the floor
01:01:20and just feeling the energy
01:01:22sort of zap out of me
01:01:23in terms of you know
01:01:24we've done it
01:01:45to beat Belgium
01:01:46favoured to the competition at the time
01:01:48and to beat them 3-1
01:01:50in the quarterfinals
01:01:51you're going into the semifinals
01:01:52you're one game away from the final
01:01:54I'm a grown man
01:01:55and I don't cry a lot
01:01:56but we are in the semifinal
01:01:58Wales
01:01:59it didn't make any sense at the time
01:02:00I remember
01:02:01after the game
01:02:02we just said it so many times
01:02:03like what are we doing?
01:02:10so we've gone to a tournament
01:02:13job done
01:02:13can we get out of the group
01:02:15job done
01:02:15hold on a minute
01:02:16now we're in the semifinal
01:02:17and it's like
01:02:18wow
01:02:19it's a wonderful back story
01:02:20with yourself
01:02:21your contract
01:02:22ran out
01:02:231st of July
01:02:24without a club
01:02:25at the moment
01:02:25has your representative
01:02:27been a bit busy
01:02:27in the last few days?
01:02:30yeah
01:02:37they were absolutely awesome
01:02:39and this is the
01:02:41it's the best time
01:02:43of my life
01:02:43I never thought
01:02:45I'd try this day
01:02:47Wales
01:02:50there's a real party
01:02:51whenever Wales go away
01:02:52even when we didn't qualify
01:02:53there's a real
01:02:54spirit of decor
01:02:55amongst the fans
01:02:56and that's a lot
01:02:57to do with what Chris Coleman
01:02:58and SM Gary
01:02:59before that
01:03:00tried to engineer
01:03:00and the Welsh FA
01:03:01and the Welsh FA
01:03:02will be brilliant
01:03:03in trying to create this atmosphere
01:03:04that when you go away
01:03:05to watch Wales
01:03:06we're all a big family
01:03:07going
01:03:08I don't think we could
01:03:09take any of it in
01:03:09because we weren't
01:03:10in the big cities
01:03:11out in France either
01:03:12other than when it was
01:03:13the matches
01:03:14Dinal is a very quiet
01:03:15little town
01:03:25I don't think any of us
01:03:27understood how big it was
01:03:28back home
01:03:28speaking back to my wife
01:03:30when she was talking about
01:03:30everybody in the village
01:03:31with the Welsh flag
01:03:32out the window
01:03:33and everybody's watching the game
01:03:34and all going on
01:03:35from early early
01:03:37you heard about the fan parks
01:03:39and you know
01:03:40before the first game
01:03:41you were like
01:03:41there's not even going to be one
01:03:43but to see the videos
01:03:44after the game
01:03:45you know
01:03:46it was just another
01:03:47spine tingling moment
01:03:48you know
01:03:48you're seeing all the drinks
01:03:49going up in the air
01:03:50and all the people celebrating
01:03:53people who had never really
01:03:54followed football
01:03:55you know
01:03:56just got grossed in it
01:03:58you just don't understand
01:04:00how much it was affecting
01:04:01people back home
01:04:02and how crazy it was
01:04:04you know
01:04:04you're watching those fan parks
01:04:05growing and growing
01:04:06and everybody in Wales
01:04:07was involved
01:04:07and that was great
01:04:08but where we were
01:04:09we were just very quiet
01:04:25so how long have you been in France
01:04:27when did the tournament start
01:04:29I can't remember
01:04:29no
01:04:3010th of June
01:04:32was it
01:04:32yeah
01:04:32we came over for the first game
01:04:35so you wouldn't believe this
01:04:36we went over to Toulouse
01:04:37for the England game
01:04:38on a Thursday
01:04:38they only shut the bloody fan zone
01:04:40hadn't they
01:04:40but we got to see the game
01:04:42in a bar called
01:04:43the Four Monkeys
01:04:44for the Ireland game
01:04:45we were in the Ireland end
01:04:46fantastic fans
01:04:47unbelievable fans
01:04:48so that was a real experience
01:04:50you know
01:04:51and we come here
01:04:52and there's all you guys
01:04:53around
01:04:53and all the squad
01:04:55walking down
01:04:55for a blinking ice cream
01:04:57you can't believe it
01:05:00it's far exceeded
01:05:02everything that I would
01:05:03ever ever want
01:05:03you know
01:05:04so
01:05:05and this has just put a cherry
01:05:06on the top
01:05:06really hasn't it
01:05:07so thanks guys
01:05:08thanks very much
01:05:14I think they've surpassed
01:05:15anything that any rugby team
01:05:16has ever done before
01:05:17for Wales
01:05:18because football is such
01:05:19a global game
01:05:20you know rugby is
01:05:21one of a dozen countries
01:05:22take it seriously
01:05:23whereas football
01:05:23obviously there's so many
01:05:24so obviously we've got
01:05:26the semi-finals
01:05:26of World Cups
01:05:27in rugby
01:05:28but this
01:05:29you know
01:05:29the country's never been
01:05:30caught up in a sporting event
01:05:32like this
01:05:32so in fairness
01:05:33the unthinkable
01:05:34one better
01:05:35it'll be truly amazing
01:05:57I'm sure you've got lots
01:05:58I'm sure you've got lots to work on now
01:05:59in the few days before the game
01:06:01without Aaron Ramsey
01:06:03without Ben Davis
01:06:04just how big a loss
01:06:05are those two players
01:06:06because they
01:06:08we knew they were good players
01:06:09beforehand
01:06:09but they have been
01:06:10very very good for you so far
01:06:11I remember looking at Aaron Ramsey
01:06:13and Ben Davis
01:06:14straight away after the Belgium game
01:06:16when the whistle went
01:06:17and they're laughing and crying
01:06:19that must have hurt both players
01:06:21they know they've done something special
01:06:22they also know they're going to miss the next game
01:06:24two bookings in five games
01:06:26it's a pretty harsh rule
01:06:27to be missing out on the semi-final
01:06:29tournament like that
01:06:30but for me and Aaron
01:06:31it was majorly disappointing
01:06:33but I remember saying to them
01:06:34during the Belgian game
01:06:35let's do this for the boys
01:06:37and get them to the semi-final
01:06:38you've got to feel for them
01:06:39because they've done so much
01:06:41the same as everybody else
01:06:42to get us where we are
01:06:44but again that's the tournament football
01:06:46you foster this mentality with Chris
01:06:48one game at a time
01:06:49one opponent at a time
01:06:51but how difficult is it now not
01:06:53to think you're in a semi-final
01:06:55you're 90 minutes away from the final
01:06:57you're 180 minutes away
01:06:59from potentially winning
01:07:00the European championships
01:07:01it must be very very hard
01:07:03not to let the mind wander
01:07:13it was similar to the Northern Ireland game
01:07:15playing against a team
01:07:16that was defensive minded
01:07:17but they had a lot more quality
01:07:18people hadn't talked about them
01:07:20that much at the tournament
01:07:21because they obviously weren't that expansive
01:07:22going forward
01:07:23and free flowing
01:07:24which we'd normally associate
01:07:25with a Portuguese team
01:07:27come the day
01:07:28I think I was probably more nervous
01:07:29not being involved in that game
01:07:31than I was when I'm playing
01:07:32it was just knowing
01:07:33you had no control
01:07:34of what was happening
01:07:35you're relying on other people
01:07:36and you can't affect the game
01:07:39fair play to the boys that come in
01:07:40I think they did a great job
01:07:41there's nothing against them
01:07:42but I just felt that
01:07:43you know they'd worked so hard
01:07:45to get there
01:07:45it seemed a bit unfair
01:07:47that they were going to miss out
01:07:48it was a strange feeling
01:07:49but one I was excited
01:07:50and really looking forward
01:07:51to the challenge
01:07:52you could see that they've done
01:07:53a lot of homework on us
01:07:54which sometimes
01:07:55with the bigger teams
01:07:56you don't get
01:07:56we've scored
01:07:5810 goals I think it is
01:07:59I think we're the highest scorers
01:08:01and Portugal have had to get
01:08:02to the semi-final
01:08:03a different way
01:08:05but nevertheless they found a way
01:08:07in the first 10, 15, 20 minutes
01:08:08you can see tactically
01:08:09he'd set them up really well
01:08:11defensively
01:08:12and nullified us
01:08:13they paid us a huge compliment
01:08:14they went on a low block
01:08:16for most of the game
01:08:17two similar types of teams
01:08:19we had working quite quick
01:08:20on the break
01:08:21same as them
01:08:21and they defended
01:08:22very well
01:08:22same as us
01:08:24game it was
01:08:25and the way Portugal played
01:08:26against us
01:08:26where they tried to shut
01:08:28all the doors
01:08:29and defended deep
01:08:30then an Aaron Ramsey
01:08:32he can find something
01:08:33it was just so frustrating
01:08:35for me to
01:08:36to watch the team
01:08:37on the side
01:08:38I felt
01:08:40like I would have had
01:08:41an effect on the game
01:08:42he's a great
01:08:44compliment with Bela
01:08:49because they're not just
01:08:49worrying about Bela
01:08:50they're also worrying
01:08:51about Ramsey
01:08:54we probably had the better
01:08:55in the first half
01:08:55you know going in at 0-0
01:08:56I thought we were
01:08:57you know we were comfortable
01:08:58we said that at half time
01:08:59and it was about
01:08:59sort of taking the game
01:09:00to them
01:09:00I still think
01:09:02you know at half time
01:09:03there wasn't that much
01:09:04between the team
01:09:05so I think
01:09:06coming out into the second half
01:09:08we were still really positive
01:09:09that you know
01:09:10if we keep going
01:09:11the chance may come
01:09:12and it might be enough
01:09:13to get us through
01:09:15we were
01:09:1645 minutes away
01:09:17from getting to a final
01:09:34I never saw John Charles play
01:09:36but my father told me
01:09:38he was like that
01:09:39you know
01:09:41jumped above everybody
01:09:42big shoulders
01:09:43power
01:09:46you see Minaldo doing that
01:09:47there's nothing we could
01:09:48have done about it
01:09:52you know
01:09:53I can't see anyone
01:09:54being able to head that ball
01:09:55you know
01:09:56he's sort of
01:09:56you look round
01:09:57and he's hanging up there
01:09:58you know
01:09:59that's Cristiano Minaldo
01:10:00you know
01:10:00he tends to stick them
01:10:02in the net
01:10:02this is where they want
01:10:03to deliver the ball
01:10:04to him
01:10:05you can't jump as high
01:10:06as you can
01:10:07nobody can
01:10:08his shins
01:10:09are at like
01:10:09James Chester's head
01:10:13from there
01:10:14it took the energy
01:10:15out of us a little bit
01:10:15and for Portugal
01:10:16I think
01:10:17if they go ahead
01:10:18it was the perfect scenario
01:10:19for them to be able
01:10:20to defend
01:10:21keep us out
01:10:22and try and hit us
01:10:22on a counter attack
01:10:23it was perfect for them
01:10:24it changed
01:10:25the whole complexion
01:10:26of the game
01:10:27it was the first time
01:10:28we had a mad five minutes
01:10:29and then they scored again
01:10:32for them to score
01:10:33straight away
01:10:33sort of
01:10:35you know
01:10:35it half killed the game off
01:10:36for us really
01:10:37in our own heads
01:10:37I suppose
01:10:39I could feel
01:10:40a fatigue
01:10:41on everyone
01:10:42up
01:10:43my 2-0 down
01:10:44was the semi-final
01:10:45oh tonight
01:10:50oh tonight
01:10:54oh tonight
01:10:55oh tonight
01:10:58I got it really bad
01:11:02people underestimate
01:11:03the physical exertion
01:11:05that's taken out
01:11:06and the emotional
01:11:06that we've done
01:11:07and I think it was
01:11:07it was one step
01:11:09too far in the end
01:11:12it's difficult
01:11:13on the world stage
01:11:14against world class players
01:11:15and that's what happens
01:11:22you do still do have
01:11:24in the back of your mind
01:11:24that if we'd had
01:11:26that little bit of luck
01:11:26on that day
01:11:27then we could have been
01:11:27in that final
01:11:32we'd do it all over again
01:11:33if we could
01:11:34and I don't think
01:11:34we'd have done
01:11:35a lot different
01:11:36I got it really bad
01:11:40as soon as a whistle
01:11:41went
01:11:41and you're out
01:11:44it was
01:11:44it was upset
01:11:46then to be honest
01:11:47you know
01:11:47I think
01:11:48I couldn't make it
01:11:49off the pitch
01:11:49I had to go off the pitch
01:11:51just to go and sit
01:11:51by myself
01:11:53I knew that was it
01:11:55there was no final
01:11:57for me to complain
01:12:00you always dreamed about it
01:12:02and you always wondered
01:12:03what it would be like
01:12:04and then you're finally
01:12:05lucky enough to get it
01:12:06and it's
01:12:07a hundred times better
01:12:08than what you thought
01:12:09it would be
01:12:10and I was stopped
01:12:11it's all done
01:12:12it's finished
01:12:13it was so
01:12:15gut-wrenching
01:12:21it was really hard
01:12:22I remember being
01:12:22in the dressing room
01:12:24and everybody's still
01:12:25on the pitch
01:12:25I didn't want to
01:12:26come back out
01:12:26I knew I had to
01:12:27because I had to
01:12:28thank everybody
01:12:29all the supporters
01:12:30that come to follow us
01:12:31and I had to do
01:12:33the media
01:12:33which I really
01:12:34didn't want to do
01:12:40we went through
01:12:40some tough times here
01:12:42and to put
01:12:44ourselves
01:12:44on the world map
01:12:45I suppose
01:12:45at a European tournament
01:12:46was a massive thing
01:12:48for us
01:12:48and to get so far
01:12:50in the tournament
01:12:50when people
01:12:51weren't necessarily
01:12:52expecting it
01:12:53we were the third best
01:12:54in Europe
01:12:55or we are
01:12:56the third best
01:12:57in Europe
01:12:59I think it doesn't
01:13:00just change football
01:13:00I think it changed
01:13:01the country
01:13:02because these events
01:13:03don't come along
01:13:03very often
01:13:07what we did
01:13:07in the Euros
01:13:08will have an impact
01:13:09on Welsh football
01:13:10for many years to come
01:13:13it was the end
01:13:14of tournament for us
01:13:15it wasn't the end
01:13:16of this team
01:13:18I think it was
01:13:19a perfect example
01:13:20to any nation
01:13:21of how to approach
01:13:23a major tournament
01:13:25if we were going out
01:13:26we were going out
01:13:26together
01:13:27if we were going through
01:13:28we were going through
01:13:29together
01:13:29and the fans
01:13:31were a part of that
01:13:34we did something
01:13:35that people never
01:13:36thought we would do
01:13:37and we surpassed
01:13:38everybody's expectations
01:13:39and as a country
01:13:41we were an absolute
01:13:42credit to the tournament
01:13:43the only thing
01:13:43that was missing
01:13:44was the trophy
01:13:46as long as the experience
01:13:47was on the pitch
01:13:48for me
01:13:48it was even our hotel
01:13:49in Dienard
01:13:50and everybody
01:13:51would be on
01:13:51on the bus
01:13:52the atmosphere
01:13:53is untouchable
01:13:54Chris Gunther
01:13:55is playing his music
01:13:56it's the same
01:13:57three songs
01:13:58every time
01:13:58we're on our way
01:13:59to the airport
01:13:59it's the same
01:14:00three songs
01:14:00coming back
01:14:02it's all that
01:14:35it wasn't to be
01:14:37but the fact
01:14:38that we got
01:14:38as far as we did
01:14:41hand on heart
01:14:42it didn't make it
01:14:43any easier
01:14:43when we lost the game
01:14:49you know
01:14:50we were watching
01:14:50the game last night
01:14:52and you feel
01:14:53a twinge of jealousy
01:14:55because those two teams
01:14:56are still going at it
01:14:57you know
01:14:57you see France
01:14:58celebrating at the end
01:15:00that's where we wanted to be
01:15:01and it's a compliment
01:15:03to our boys
01:15:04because
01:15:04they haven't just settled
01:15:06and thought
01:15:06we'll go to the semi-final
01:15:08you can still feel
01:15:09there's a disappointment
01:15:10and I quite like that
01:15:25we got back to dinner
01:15:27and we had sort of a day
01:15:28as a squad
01:15:29of just reflecting on stuff
01:15:30so the flight home
01:15:31was quite quiet right
01:15:31there's a few tired people on there
01:15:36you start to try
01:15:37and understand
01:15:37you know
01:15:38well actually
01:15:39it probably wasn't just
01:15:40you know
01:15:40a few games that we played
01:15:41for Wales
01:15:41and we enjoyed it
01:15:42and we did well
01:15:42it was a bit more
01:15:43at the time
01:15:44I think
01:15:44you know
01:15:44it seems to be
01:15:45like it lifted
01:15:46the whole country
01:15:48it's just the fact
01:15:49that we're known now
01:15:50being Welsh
01:15:50sometimes you go somewhere
01:15:52in the world
01:15:52and people don't know
01:15:53where Wales is
01:15:54you know
01:15:54whereas
01:15:55from now on
01:15:56those boys
01:15:56put Wales on the map
01:16:03I think we all just realise
01:16:05how much it meant to everyone
01:16:07we thought it was going to be
01:16:08a normal get off
01:16:09a few people might clap us
01:16:10and that
01:16:10but obviously we're out
01:16:11the Euros now
01:16:12people might not be caring that much
01:16:14they've got to get back to work
01:16:15or find another job
01:16:16because they've quit the other one
01:16:18years gone by
01:16:19there'd probably be
01:16:20three, four people there
01:16:22you know
01:16:22cheering us out of the airport
01:16:25this time we got off the plane
01:16:26all the streets there
01:16:27all lined with people
01:16:29we were
01:16:29there was cars
01:16:30pulling over
01:16:31waving
01:16:32and I thought
01:16:33god this is
01:16:34this is fantastic
01:16:35you know
01:16:35little did we know
01:16:36what was waiting in Cardiff
01:16:40like nothing you'd ever seen
01:16:41before as a player
01:16:43it was almost like
01:16:44we'd won
01:16:44the competition
01:16:45to be honest
01:16:46it was
01:16:47an amazing
01:16:48amazing feeling
01:16:50we're a small country
01:16:53you know
01:16:53and I think
01:16:54unless you're from Wales
01:16:55you don't
01:16:56sometimes get it
01:16:56and people were saying
01:16:57was it the right thing to do
01:16:59but this is a country
01:17:00that
01:17:01never done this before
01:17:02that was the first time
01:17:03when we experienced
01:17:04where it was like
01:17:04back around
01:17:05there was
01:17:05I don't know if anybody knew
01:17:07how many he was there
01:17:07but it was
01:17:08yeah it was incredible
01:17:10and I'm right at the front
01:17:11and I'm with Baylor
01:17:12and Rambo actually
01:17:13I think Ashley's on one side
01:17:14because he gunned us there
01:17:15and I said to Baylor
01:17:17god I bet you've never seen
01:17:18anything like this
01:17:19have you
01:17:19he said
01:17:20well I've actually
01:17:21just seen it in Madrid
01:17:23we just won the Champions League
01:17:24so
01:17:26took a bit of water
01:17:28on my fire a bit
01:17:28you know what I mean
01:17:29but
01:17:29to experience it with Wales
01:17:30was an amazing thing
01:17:32and I'm sure
01:17:33one everybody will
01:17:34will remember
01:17:35for the rest of their lives
01:17:37everyone was just saying
01:17:38thank you
01:17:39and I was like
01:17:39well thanks for what
01:17:40you know
01:17:40we haven't
01:17:41I don't understand
01:17:42what we've done
01:17:43the homecoming
01:17:44I think was a bit of a
01:17:45I wasn't surprised
01:17:46but it was just an amazing event
01:17:47to see so many people out
01:17:49and hearing all the stories
01:17:50and everybody
01:17:51were back again
01:17:52to the supporters
01:17:53the supporters who went up
01:17:54one match
01:17:54and then came back
01:17:55for five weeks
01:17:55I know I'll always remember
01:17:57being a part of that
01:17:58and it's just nice to hear
01:17:59people's stories
01:18:00when they tell you
01:18:00what it meant to them
01:18:02and how it inspired their family
01:18:04or whatever it might be
01:18:05it was something I never thought
01:18:06would happen
01:18:07especially for Welsh football
01:18:08when we were getting
01:18:103,000 fans down
01:18:11Cardiff City Stadium
01:18:11watching games
01:18:12so in a couple of years
01:18:14short space of time
01:18:14to see that reaction
01:18:15was really special
01:18:17and something
01:18:18yeah I'll never forget that
01:18:27a quarter of a million people
01:18:29had come out onto the streets
01:18:30just to congratulate us
01:18:33it was quite overwhelming
01:18:37we went further than anyone
01:18:38probably ever expected
01:18:39so it was just nice for us
01:18:40to be back in Cardiff
01:18:42and see all the fans
01:18:43you know wearing their shirts
01:18:44and all the kids
01:18:45and everyone just so happy with us
01:18:46people who couldn't get over there
01:18:48had the chance to say thank you
01:18:50and I think more importantly
01:18:51for us to say thank you to them
01:19:01I never ever thought
01:19:03we'd be in a position where
01:19:06we had the whole nation
01:19:08proud of us you know
01:19:09you know
01:19:22you
