00:25:09Thank you guys, it definitely did not happen without all of you guys, so we're all one
00:25:14big unit.
00:25:15So thank you and have fun tonight.
00:25:32I don't know about this year.
00:25:34I just pray it's all right, everybody's safe, because they're all chomping at the bit to
00:25:40get going.
00:25:43With the El Nino's winter season upon us, there's guys who truly believe and want to
00:25:50paddle into 70, 80 foot waves out there, and as far as the ceiling, how big of a wave you
00:25:56can paddle into, that's down to personal desire.
00:26:00It's always going to progress.
00:26:02For me to sit here and say, oh no, our generation, no one's going to top that, is bullshit.
00:26:10Right day, right conditions, right safety team, probably see somebody this year do the impossible.
00:26:18You can sense the tension in the air, but I always can sense how much fun they have.
00:26:24When they're getting ready the day before, they're up at the crack of dawn.
00:26:35The first swell of the year at Jaws is always super exciting, and everybody's a little nervous
00:26:41and excited to see each other.
00:26:42There's that energy in the air that you really just can't duplicate.
00:26:46It almost feels like you're going to, like, a gladiator war every time you go out there.
00:26:50Like, there, you don't know what's going to happen.
00:26:53I wasn't really here on the buoys this morning, so we slowed everything down.
00:26:57Rather than launching at, like, 6 o'clock, we decided to just move everything back and
00:27:03not burn ourselves out, sitting out there waiting for the waves.
00:27:08The wind's going to come up, but there's no wind right now, so the quicker we get out there,
00:27:11the glassier of heat.
00:27:31The first thing that you really feel is the texture of the ocean.
00:27:36You're going to see if it's windy, if it's choppy.
00:27:39There's a lot of refraction coming off the rocks.
00:27:43You feel the energy of the swell, and that's really when everything sets in for the day for
00:27:49me.
00:27:50Ian's paddling.
00:27:51Ian's dropping.
00:27:51Ian's dropping.
00:28:04That was a sick one.
00:28:05It got really steep.
00:28:16Keep an eye.
00:28:17Here comes the set.
00:28:22We got Dorian up.
00:28:23We got Dorian up.
00:28:30Grab the ropes.
00:28:35Greg.
00:28:36This is Greg.
00:28:42This is Ian.
00:28:43This is Ian.
00:28:44Ian is up.
00:28:45Ian is up.
00:28:59Look, I think I cut myself pretty bad.
00:29:01Hey, we're coming back to the boat.
00:29:03Ian cut his finger.
00:29:04Get the boat ready.
00:29:06Can I surf still, Ian?
00:29:07Yeah.
00:29:08Just wrap it and stitch it later.
00:29:10I had a little hiccup in the middle of the day.
00:29:12The back of the fins sliced my finger open pretty much down to the bone.
00:29:17Wrapped it up real quick and went back out.
00:29:19And I got another fun wave that was really bumpy.
00:29:24Ended up taking a breather and the waves just seemed to get kind of weird right then.
00:29:33That little bit of wind makes night and day difference.
00:29:36It's not seeing anything and having salt water in your eye.
00:29:42You're basically jumping off a bridge without knowing what's at the bottom of it.
00:29:50On a really good day at Jaws, you could go and just catch one wave in those seven, eight, nine
00:29:56hours.
00:29:58Right now, we kind of just finally got the whole crew in and I'll go get stitched up this evening.
00:30:03Make sure that I didn't chop any tendons or anything weird.
00:30:08Feels like a medium to average day, but very good start.
00:30:13It's just the beginning.
00:30:17Push out. Good. Close in. Out. Good.
00:30:21Okay, put your hand down completely.
00:30:22If there's a contest, an epic swell, and you need to surf tomorrow, I could dress it properly.
00:30:27Probably better you stay out of the water for a couple days.
00:30:30Yeah, I have. I'm aiming for the 10th.
00:30:32So six days would be my goal.
00:30:40The whole history of big wave surfing is super interesting.
00:30:43You know, those guys are like such pioneers.
00:30:46They would go out there with no leashes and no safety equipment.
00:30:49There was always this idea that anything bigger than 40 feet starts to become too dangerous to paddle.
00:30:56You know, that borderline impossible size.
00:30:59And then there was this sort of introduction of toe surfing.
00:31:03Basically, if you could stand up on a surfboard, you could get towed into a big wave.
00:31:07You can ride 10 or 15 of those types of waves because of how much more you can position yourself.
00:31:14You got a machine that can go 40 miles an hour.
00:31:16And, you know, if the wave's 50 feet that direction, you know, go get it.
00:31:22Guys wouldn't surf all year, then they would come out and tow 50 feet.
00:31:25It's insane.
00:31:28But you take any average person to paddle surf out at Jaws, they're not going to catch a wave.
00:31:33And if they do, they're going to get absolutely annihilated.
00:31:46What the toe revolution did was show us that it was possible to survive waves a lot bigger than we
00:31:53imagined.
00:32:00Toe surfing just really helped develop the jet ski as a tool for water safety in anything you're going to
00:32:07do in the ocean.
00:32:09And that was really the stepping stone for the next evolution of big wave surfing.
00:32:16And I used to race competitively with paddle boards and had this idea I could just really make these boards
00:32:22paddle faster.
00:32:25That's when Ian and Greg and, you know, a handful of other guys started paddling these things.
00:32:34We made that conscious decision to stop toe surfing and go back to paddling.
00:32:44Well, the speed that the wave travels once it gets over 50 feet is too fast.
00:32:49Your average board design, everything has to change.
00:32:52Are they ready? I'm not sure.
00:32:54No one's ever done this before, so nobody knows.
00:32:59Chris Christensen, he keeps details that I don't think any other shaper, you know, really does.
00:33:06So I think finding something that we can hold a higher line, and whenever I get really pounded,
00:33:11it's because I'm drifting a little bit too far down the wave.
00:33:14After every major swell he surfs, get in touch with each other right after it.
00:33:18Having that more parallel rail up here is what's allowing the board to work better in the pocket.
00:33:23We're able to get you to paddle in faster with the wider shoulders,
00:33:26and then having that wider tail block, so it's allowing it to be a little looser.
00:33:32If they can be confident in me before they get in the water, that's right away they're ahead of the
00:33:38game.
00:33:50The forecast is looking really good, probably the best of the year.
00:33:53Do you think this is the size Ian's looking for?
00:33:56Uh, no, Ian wants pretty much as big as he gets.
00:34:00It just, it feels like the swell is not really here yet.
00:34:03I don't know, the buoys just aren't diving out at me.
00:34:07I think we're just gonna launch right now and stick with our plan and get out there at first light,
00:34:12and hopefully it starts to pick up through the morning.
00:34:20Fucking best condition ever right now.
00:34:26The fact that the forecast showed really light winds generated a lot more interest from surfers all over the world.
00:34:46The crowd in the morning was a little bit lighter, so you could position yourself and kind of start lining
00:34:51up the waves the way you want to with where you want to take off.
00:35:04I think a guy's board went right over me at the end of the barrel.
00:35:19And then as the crowd thickens, it dictates where you take off based on where you're stuck in the crowd.
00:35:29When you're turning around trying to, you know, paddle into a giant wave and you've got people on your left,
00:35:33on your right, hooting, calling you off.
00:35:35The media's there, there's helicopters flying everywhere, there's freaking drones buzzing your head, boats are running in each other, it's
00:35:41just freaking chaos.
00:35:45I've surfed Jaws for 15 years, and I don't go there anymore because it's just a crazy zoo, it's no
00:35:49fun, it's too dangerous.
00:35:52The last thing I want to do is drop in on somebody and have them get hurt.
00:35:57Because that's when you're gonna make, you know, mistakes, that, you know, you're surfing according to the crowd, not how
00:36:02you actually want to.
00:36:11And there's 50 people out there, I'm definitely not comfortable.
00:36:15Ian, on the other hand, he seems to thrive.
00:36:23You're...
00:36:28...
00:36:33...
00:36:35...
00:36:36It ain't supposed to cry.
00:37:12Let's go pound down this thing over here.
00:37:39Go D.K.
00:37:45Being with my brothers in the water at Jaws is something I can't even explain.
00:37:50It's probably one of the most special moments.
00:37:52There's nothing you can beat. It's the best feeling in the world.
00:37:56On most days, we're trading off doing safety for each other,
00:38:00and that gives all of us a chance to surf.
00:38:061.
00:38:071.
00:38:242.
00:38:262.
00:38:282.
00:38:282.
00:38:323.
00:38:333.
00:38:353.
00:38:353.
00:38:353.
00:38:35good sets came in today over an eight or a ten hour period the weather and
00:38:41everything's here but the swells aren't way too small I'd be blown away if they
00:38:46actually call it right
00:38:54a huge contribution to the evolution of sport is in fact you know the safety and
00:39:00most notably is the inflatable vest that that we've developed I came up with
00:39:04the idea of an inflatable wetsuit from having a near-death experience at Mavericks
00:39:13I was getting older I was married having kids I just felt like it was way too risky for me
00:39:18to
00:39:18justify it was something that was needed because the sport went to such a level that we were losing
00:39:25people you know that's that wasn't acceptable when you wipe out you know you can pull a cord and the
00:39:33thing will inflate and bring you to the surface you know you don't want to go you know what I'm
00:39:38safe because I got the vest on you know you don't want that attitude at all what happens when you
00:39:43get
00:39:44in that situation when your vest pops or that situation your vest isn't cool so because of the
00:39:50vest we have a lot more people who would never be out there otherwise the crowd at certain spots has
00:39:58become uncontrollable become uncontrollable because of it it's a paradox for sure
00:40:11it's saved lives but it's also in a way I feel like endangering lives there's people you know out
00:40:17there who you know probably shouldn't be if you're gonna surf anywhere in the world you should have a
00:40:25safety plan and a backup plan and a backup plan after that most people feel the vest is the safety
00:40:32plan and they just assume that like the twins are gonna go pick those guys up it was definitely hard
00:40:39morally at the beginning of it when it started getting really crowded I could never live with myself
00:40:45knowing I was supposed to be out there working with this group so I consider my family and something
00:40:50happens because I wasn't being responsible for them I was being responsible for somebody else that has
00:40:55nothing to do with our operation I don't think it's anyone's right to say you can and can't but you
00:41:02know when you cross that line of not kind of following the proper safety protocols being able to look
00:41:07after yourself first you kind of have crossed the line and need to rethink you know what you're doing out
00:41:13there if you look at the inflatable vest yes it's a nightmare on certain days at certain ways but
00:41:23sport has just become incredible because of it for the 15th we had a swell that was forecast to be
00:41:41bigger than anything we'd had all winter maybe in my lifetime so it was kind of lining up to be
00:41:49a
00:41:49monumental day for paddle and surfing
00:42:00bringing toe boards is part of the discussion but I'm pretty stubbornly set on trying to paddle
00:42:07all we're all a little scared and kind of concerned about how big it's going to be out there today
00:42:12but
00:42:13hopefully it's somewhat manageable
00:42:18I'm actually really nervous right now I'm kind of tripping man I don't know I'm just weird hearing feeling
00:42:25yeah I'm a little rattled but Dave show up feeling a little average that's for sure
00:42:31Greg was basically sick the whole time and wasn't able to surf so Greg ended up running safety
00:42:37it's really hard to pull yourself out of a day like that and you know how much time you've spent
00:42:43waiting
00:42:43for a day like that to be able to surf everything that we look for chasing around big waves is
00:42:51leading up to this day
00:42:55I've never seen jaws break like that in my life two hours we're gonna be towing watch
00:43:14it's it felt like you're scratching just to get a little bit of momentum into it because the waves moving
00:43:20so
00:43:20fast then there's so much water coming up the face perfect example of be careful what you wish for

00:46:35You okay?
00:46:36My neck.
00:46:37What?
00:46:37My neck.
00:46:38Hey, wait.
00:46:38This is Sean Walsh.
00:46:40Yeah?
00:46:41I'm super tingly in my neck, fuck.
00:46:47Take it away.
00:46:52I could look in everyone's eyes that like, oh my God, this is like what happened at Cortez.
00:46:58It was like a fully switched situation.
00:47:01Like, DK was there, saved Greg's life, and now Greg is doing everything he can.
00:47:07It was just kind of all surreal.
00:47:09Like, my heart sank.
00:47:10You know, I didn't know how bad or what was going on.
00:47:14DK, do you want 911?
00:47:16I need an ambulance.
00:47:18Don't call mom.
00:47:21Doesn't matter how good the waves are, that's the priority, no matter what.
00:47:24We got him in really safely.
00:47:27The goal right there is just to move him to a higher echelon of care.
00:47:32Once that happens, there's not much else we could do.
00:47:35Sean, Ian, Luke, everyone's trying to go with me.
00:47:37I knew how good the waves were, and I wanted them to stay once in a lifetime conditions in that
00:47:43size.
00:47:49We stayed out, and it morphed into a really pivotal day in my lifetime.
00:48:34I just had like a weird rib up the face.
00:48:37I couldn't get my engine for so long.
00:48:57I saw him whip it and go on this wave, and right when I saw him get to speed, I
00:49:00was like, he's too deep.
00:49:01And, you know, when you're out there, sometimes you just have to take that risk.
00:49:33And he was on his toes the whole time when he was going down the wave.
00:49:36I thought he was going to jump.
00:49:38wilts
00:49:38ack
00:49:39ack
00:49:39and ack
00:49:41sn map
00:50:06an act
00:50:18You know, what happened, some of the rides out there today, that's, you know, history
00:50:21was made for sure.
00:50:25Yeah, today was incredible, but as soon as I kicked out of that wave, reality hit and
00:50:30all I could think about was DK.
00:50:51Nothing was broken, nothing was fractured, all the MRIs and everything came back good.
00:50:56Now for the next month or so, I got to wear this neck brace and just kind of lay low
00:51:02for
00:51:02a while and hopefully let my body heal.
00:51:10This has been an intense January.
00:51:13About a week ago, we had one of the biggest days I've ever seen with clean winds in my
00:51:20entire life here.
00:51:21It just felt like we might never really see everything come together like that again until
00:51:27we're all too old and we're cheerleaders on the cliff.
00:51:30And then another huge system popped up in the middle of the Pacific and here we are.
00:51:39Just to have another chance with conditions like this is just, it made me kind of take
00:51:45a step back and have a lot more appreciation for these swells that we're getting right now.
00:51:52I thought my winner was done after getting out of the hospital, then I got word back from
00:51:56the doctors in LA, they said everything's in place.
00:51:59I'm so thankful, like I never thought that was going to happen.
00:52:04And it sucks for him to not be able to surf, but he is without a doubt probably the best
00:52:09guy in a ski doing safety.
00:52:10So I think the entirety of the line up feels a lot more comfortable and confident just
00:52:15having him in the water.
00:52:16Greg, this is Greg.
00:52:35Keep an eye on Greg boys, keep an eye on Greg, I got him, I got him.
00:52:42In this sport like you definitely want to see your friends do well.
00:52:46For Greg, he had a wave a few years ago, that was one of the best barrels ever ridden
00:52:52at Dawes.
00:52:57And as it spit, he fell flying out of the barrel.
00:53:06He calls it kind of tripping across the finish line.
00:53:11You just see how much time and energy goes into every one of these waves that are ridden,
00:53:15and how long it takes to even get to a day like this, and it was really cool to see
00:53:21everything come together for Greg today.
00:53:41When he got the barrel and rode out into the channel, you could almost see all the energy
00:53:46and work that went into that wave like pour out of him.
00:53:50We got Dorian up, we got Dorian up.
00:53:55We got to go.
00:54:24We're going to go ahead and see him in the world.
00:54:31Part of what JAWS is, is like you surf for six hours, you might only get one really good
00:54:37opportunity at a wave.
00:54:57Yeah, four hours later, I got one of the best waves I've ever had out there.
00:56:09Everything finally clicked.
00:56:10Rather than just being focused on one goal of riding the biggest wave of your life, it's
00:56:16more about taking a step back and appreciating all the little things that lead up to and
00:56:20follow these days.
00:56:24The last El Nino was in 1998, there's only been four real El Ninos in 40 years.
00:56:30The best big waves I've ever seen, I've been surfing big waves for 25 years.
00:56:38Ian's chosen a path that really, that really suits him.
00:56:42I'm just really blessed as a dad.
00:56:47Yeah.
00:56:53Part of surfing is just always looking at what's next.
00:57:00It's true what they say, the greater the adversity, the greater the accomplishment.
00:57:05And for me, whether it's the size of the waves or stepping into the unknown, that's where I
00:57:11want to be.
00:57:27It's true.
00:57:37It's true.
00:57:42It's true.
00:57:44It's true.
00:57:48It's true.
00:57:49It's true.
00:57:57It's true.
00:57:58It's true.

00:58:13It's true.
00:58:13It's true.
00:58:14It's true.
00:58:16It's true.
00:58:17It's true.
00:58:19It's true.
00:58:20It's true.
00:58:20It's true.
00:58:21It's true.
00:58:21It's true.
